Best Protective Finish for Outdoor Wood Furniture?

I'm planning on splitting a oak log to build a outdoor garden bench; what should I use for a finish? Would polyurethane be a good choice?

You might consider marine varnish as it is made for boats and can take alot of wet and weather. Be sure your log is good and cured before doing anything with a preservative for the wood.
