Gigi (Chihuahua)

Gigi is a one and a half year old Chihuahua. My husband got her for me for Christmas, 2007. She loves to chase the rooster, carry an egg to the house and eat it raw, play with her stuffed animals, and play with the cats.

My husband bought her specifically, because I wanted another chihuahua, after growing up with one. Mandy, the first one, was my "mom's dog" (they are very loyal to the parents) and my mom died when I was 16. I took care of Mandy and loved her with all my heart. She died four years later at 16 years old.

Alice Avalon Bay (Spitz/Border Collie)

Alice Avalon Bay is a 4 year old half spitz and half border collie. I got Alice from a "friend" (coworker) that used to abuse her. Really, I saved her from an evil monster. She didn't want her anymore and was going to put her outside to fend for herself.

Alice loves giving hugs. When I get home she waits for me to put my bags down and then gets up on her hind legs and gives me a hug. Besides hugging, she loves playing with her many toys, visiting the local dog park or going for long walks on cool evenings.

Alice is an absolute joy to have around, she has probably saved my life. She came in when not only she needed saving but I needed something as well. We've been best friends ever since. Everything gets decided around her, whether it's a car big enough for 2 adults and a dog or vacations where she can join.

Halloween Ghost Brownies

This is a simple Halloween project you and your kids can do together. They make a super treat for home or a class at school. Simply make brownies, following the directions on the package. Allow them to cool and then use a cookie cutter to cut out ghost shapes, as opposed to cutting them in squares.

Set the brownie ghosts on a plate and then sprinkle them with confectioners sugar (powdered sugar) to make them white. They were a big hit at our house!

Gypsy (Pitbull Terrier)

Gypsy is 1.5 years old. She is an American Pitbull Terrier. I got her at 7 months old, from a breeder, she wasn't doing well in kennel life, and the breeder wanted her to have a home where she could be with a family as a pet.

She likes to cuddle, play dress up with my daughters, bark at everything, and go on long walks with "Dad." She is the best pitty girl ever, with the sweetest personality.

Today's Tips:

Childproofing Your Home Office

My two year old grand daughter was here overnight and after finding her trying to open a bottle of liquid paper, I decided to childproof our home computer room. Here is the lists of things I did t make the room kid safe.

  1. Put all cleaning supplies, ink cartridges and liquid paper in a drawer, out of sight.

  2. The letter opener, scissors, pens and pencils are also put in a sorter tray in my desk drawer.

  3. My husband made new keys for the file cabinets so they can be kept locked so she can not pull open the drawers.

  4. I cleaned up the clutter, loose change, rubber bands, and tops to pens, paper clips, all are now stored where little hands can not find them and perhaps swallow.

  5. We now keep our paper shredder off at all times, only turning on when we need to shred.

Using Smaller Amounts of Toiletries

Dime sized shampoo works great for me, even when my hair is long, and it saves money too.

Just put a dime sized plop of shampoo in your hand, rub it, and spread it over your damp hair, and nope, it does not usually lather in your hair. Rinse it off, and, I don't need much water to rinse it either, however, when I use another dime size plop of shampoo on my hand, and rub in my hands and then hair, I get plenty of lather then, and I also found that using less shampoo like that, my hair looked great, I didn't need to use a lot of water to get rid of the shampoo out, and my shampoo bottle lasts for a very long time.

Make Pumpkins from Plastic Milk Jugs

This is a fun Halloween craft you can help your kids with. Instead of buying real pumpkins to use for your Halloween, decorations, why not use plastic milk jugs instead. I took about 4 empty plastic milk jugs and turned them into pumpkins.

Take about 4 or 5 clean empty milk jugs and orange and black acrylic craft paints. Have the kids paint the jugs orange, let dry for an hour. Then paint eye, nose and mouth on the jug. Parents can cut yarn into different lengths for hair. The kids can glue the hair onto the jugs and add other things to make scary pumpkins.

Super Frothy Body Wash

I like this because it works just as good as the fancy stuff and the ingredients are super cheap.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Tbsp. canola oil
  • 1/2 cup of cheap dollar store shampoo
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • essential oil of your choice
  • food coloring

Directions:

add canola oil to shampoo. Mix without making bubbles, and add the essential oils and food coloring (optional). Then add the baking powder and the baking soda, and lastly mix in the salt. Pore into a a bottle and apply with a tulle sponge (or any sponge) and enjoy!

Store a Rechargeable Flashlight in Your Car

My husband mounted a rechargeable flashlight to his floor board right under his dash. He used regular screws to hold in place. The rechargeable part fits into his cigarette lighter for his recharging. Now he has a fully charged flashlight anytime he needs one.

Drilling in Wood

Make the job easier and prevent splitting the wood. Drill a pilot hole, and apply liquid soap to the screw. The screw will go in as 'greased' and the soap will dry to help prevent it from coming loose in the future (a drop or two on the screw is sufficient).

Tips for Cleaning Floors

When I wash my floors, I fill a bucket with clean water for rinsing my microfiber mop. In a spray bottle, I add a cleaning mixture. I spray the floor and damp mop. Depending on how dirty the floor is, I sometimes wait before I mop to allow the cleaner to soak a bit. I rinse the mop in the bucket of clean water.

When the rinse water gets dirty, empty and refill. This way you are always starting out with a rinsed clean mop. I always allow my floors air dry. You can use any type of mop and cleaning mixture. This is the mixture that I use.

Floor All Purpose Cleaner: Do not use on wood or laminated flooring. Great for tile and no-wax floors.

In a one gallon jug add in this order and mix gently. If you add the cleaners first, before the water, it will be very sudsy.

  • 3 quarts water
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 Tbsp. ammonia
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 Tbsp. bleach-free liquid laundry detergent

This can be used as a floor cleaner or as an all-purpose cleaner. I always have a few spray bottles around the house.

The worst treatment for a floor is to "swab it", meaning using too much water or cleaner that lays on the flooring.

For Laminate Floors: Use one cup of white vinegar to 2 gallons of warm water or recommended cleaner from manufacturer.

For Wood Floors: Use a diluted solution of Murphy's Oil cleaner or any other wood floor cleaner.

Source: Method of wash is from a floor installer, recipe is from "Consumers Report" magazine.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

One night a wife found her husband standing over their newborn baby's crib. Silently she watched him. As he stood looking down at the sleeping infant, she saw on his face a mixture of emotions: disbelief, doubt, delight, amazement, enchantment, and skepticism.

Touched by this unusual display and the deep emotions it aroused, with eyes glistening she slipped her arm around her husband.

"A penny for your thoughts," she whispered.

"It's truly amazing!" he replied. "I just can't see how anybody can make a crib like that for only $49.95."

Remedy For a Stinky Dog

Lotty is a 9 year old yellow lab. The smell is very sweet and cheesy. At first we thought it was coming from her ears. She does not have ear mites and her ears are very clean. She also scratches a lot, but she does not have fleas. Both the ear mites and fleas have been checked by the vet. The vet also gave her an injection for the itching, but this did very little good.

I have given her several baths and the smell if any thing gets stronger. I have changed her food in the last year, as I thought that this may be the cause. So I have now gone back in the last few days to the original food to see if it makes a difference.

The smell is so strong that you can smell her in passing and when she lies down by you it is so bad it can make you feel sick.

I have a black range top for cooking. What is the best cleaning product to use for this type of surface? I have tried the standards, 409K, Fantastik, special wipes, but it doesn't really clean the range. I just need to clean the top, the self-cleaning part inside works fine. Thank you.
