The toothpaste really works!! Today my son used a sharpie that bled through his homework onto our vintage maple desk. The toothpaste and lots of elbow grease got it off!

I blew up a pen and some spots got on the oak cabinets in the kitchen.
First I tried the toothpaste, because that got it off my hands. No good.
Then I tried the hairspray because I remember using that decades ago when I worked in a grocery store - no good. Then I tried some goof off; no good.

I didn't want to use rubbing alcohol because I was afraid of harming the finish so I tried it first on the inside of the door as a test. No problem.

So I dripped a drop on each spot and let it sit for about 30 seconds, then added some tooth paste because of someone elses blog above. That was the combination that worked!

Thanks so much to those who went before me.

Thank you for the toothpaste info,my son was practicing his numbers when it went through the paper onto our brand new very expensive table, unknown to me he was using a sharpie. Worked like a charm with a little elbow grease.

Incredible! Both Toothpaste and rubbing alcohol removed the black dye from my expensive office table. I tried different things and even had a professional stop by with his products but nothing worked until I stopped by this site.

What's all this about kids ruining tables with permanent markers. You parents blame everything on us. Especially when it's your fault. Of course 2 year olds will draw on walls if they get a hold of a permanent marker. Put them all in a high cupboard where you keep the poisonous stuff and medicine.

This really works! i was at home and drawing when I accidentally got some pernament market on my oak desk. The toothpaste wasn't really working but adding a little rubbing alcohol worked like magic. you cannot see the stain at all anymore and the best part is no one found out!

The toothpaste thing really works! While I was making lunch for my nephew he wrote all over my sisters brand new coffee table. I freaked because I needed to get it off before she got home. Then I hopped on here; tried the toothpaste, and it worked!

I was cooking my dinner one night after I got home from work and noticed that there was permanent marker ink on my moms 100 year old dining room table. I immediately got online and found the website which said use toothpaste and rubbing alcohol. It worked GREAT! The marks are out of the table. Thank Goodness! Thank you so much for this great tip!

Wow! My 2yr old used my new computer screen as an easel and his choice of instrument was a permanent marker. After me and my two older children panicked I hit the web and read through the scribbles about using toothpaste on wood. I sent my daughter to the bathroom to get the toothpaste while I grabbed the towels. We smeared it all over the screen and with a light wax on wax of motion. I am relived to report I can see clearly now! Not only does toothpaste fight against cavities, gingivitis and plaque. It fights against little budding artists and permanent ink. Thank you for the tip!

We couldn't get it to work with just the toothpaste, but the rubbing alcohol and a little elbow grease took the permanent marker right out of my son's headboard.

The tip about toothpaste is excellent. Don't worry about needing alcohol. The toothpaste alone took care of our son's handy artwork on our dinning room table.

Maybe I can reclaim my food that my roommates stole from me. When I first moved in with them, I decided that we should separate the food. They got all butt hurt about it and put their names on all their food AND mine!! Don't get me wrong, I'm not a greedy person. But I'm a young woman struggling to find employment in a small town and I really can't afford food for myself and them too!!! I tried rubbing alcohol and Pepsodent toothpaste and was able to rub off the permanent sharpie. Thank you so much.

p.s. If you're having the same problem...just a little warning...be careful where you scrub....it may work for the marker but it also can take off the label too!...hehe oops!!

What about paper?

Editor's Note: If it is permanent ink, you probably won't be able to remove it from paper.

My three year son who loves to write all over the house, decided to keep himself busy by writing on our dining table with pen while watching his sister play on the computer. I followed the advice about taking toothpaste, and rubbing it hard with a cloth, and "it worked, it really did the job." Thanks to whoever gave me this advice.

They are all wrong take cloth and toothpaste (any) and pour (rubbing) alcohol on cloth both mix together then scrub hard and success will occur!

Wow! Toothpaste is an amazing substance! My 2 year old daughter drew me a caterpillar (or that's what she told me to try and lighten the moment!!) all over the fabric of my computer chair with a fluro green texta! I got some toothpaste on a damp old cloth nappy and rubbed til every last remaining ink (or caterpillar leg) was gone - thankyou to whoever suggested toothpaste - I hope it works on tables as well - it will be the first thing I try if I find any more liitle texta drawings...

Several years ago, when my daughter was one, she got hold of a permanent marker and wrote all over, in big huge swirls, my brand new sofa. I cried hysterically for twenty minutes, then got on the internet. I used rubbing alcohol and that sofa looked brand new in minutes. Same sofa lasted six years and only recently got the boot, only due to too much dog usage.

Today the same daughter used a permanent marker to write on paper and it went through, ruining our wood table. I tried the rubbing alcohol but it didn't seem to do much good. After reading this about "elbow grease", I tried again. Brand new. I also used the alcohol to get some other stains off the table. It worked on two others. Thanks, all.

Miracle, I saved a $10,000 dollar cherry wood table from a permanent ink attack from my 7 year old son. Use Arm & Hammer whitening toothpaste. Put small amount, let stand 1 minute and rub with a cloth. Good Luck! Thanks Leah for the idea

Use baby wipes, wipe over with one and leave for about thirty seconds then wipe again, repeat until all marks are gone.
Note: Obviously you must not rub too hard or you will end up with damage to the screen.

My 2 yr. old son just "drawed" on our brand new wooden table with a blue Sharpie permanent marker. I tried 409, Dish soap, and baby wipes. Then I found this site. I didn't have baking soda (just moved into our new house) or rubbing alchohol. I tried the toothpaste. It took 6 or 7 times. I put on Aquafresh Whitening Expressions toothpaste and rubbed it in with a soft toothbrush. I let that sit for about 5 minutes each time and then scrubbed with a rough sponge. After about 6 or 7 rounds of this, our table is clean again. There is just the faintest blue left in the deep cracks but you can only tell if you're looking!! Thanks everybody!

My sister was doing school work on my mom's really expensive wood table and got purple sharpie marker on it. We tried the rubbing alcohol and it worked. She tried everything in the world to remove it...even bleach on a q-tip. The ink was even sitting for a few days. Thanks for whomever recommended the rubbing alcohol.

TOOTHPASTE! After ruining my mother-in-laws birthday gift (a really nice wood frame with pics of our newborn with each of the family members) by trying to be crafty and stencil "grandma" on the top, I quickly asked jeeves how to get rid of the permanent marker. I came upon this site and the toothpaste trick saved me! I couldn't believe it when the marker started to dissapear! Thank you!

If you have permanent Marker, like a Sharpie, marks all over something, you can easily remove it if it is a smooth surface, like appliances, glass, tables, etc, by using a dry erase marker. Take your dry erase marker and write over it, let it sit a minute, then use a dry erase marker or better yet a Mr Clean Magic eraser and erase it. The chemicals in the dry erase marker breaks down that in the sharpie, so it can easily be erased. I work for a Public School, and we are all the time having this same issue happen...Hope this helps!

My nephew used a "Sanford Overhead Transparency Marker" (permanent fine point) to mark my new flat panel screen, as well as the keyboard and desk. I will try to use alcohol on the keyboard and desk, but am VERY scared to use anything on the flat panel screen.

"Angela" said that she used alcohol ... did you use that for the computer screen as well? Was it an LCD screen, or regular screen.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated ... I am really trying to be calm and not panic about this.

Thank you.

While visiting my parents, my daughter was coloring on a piece of paper with a black ink marker, when I happened to notice and checked under the paper to discover that the black ink went through it and on our $800.00 coffee table. I just about lost my mind in fear of my father.....when I found this site.....I tried the 'rubbing alcohol' trick and boy....did it work wonders.....plus it saved my ass at the same time...lol

I just tried the toothpaste & the rubbing alcohol after my daughter got black permanent marker all over an expensive desk & my computer screen...
The toothpaste works, but takes some effort & did damage the surface. The rubbing alcohol worked amazingly better, took no effort & didn't scratch the surface.

Alcholo did the trick: Two months ago I refinished our dining room table with Minwax Polyurethane. My daughter got Sharpie permanent marker on it right in the middle of the table.

Formula 409 did nothing... toothpaste did nothing... Rubbing Alcohol took it off with mimimal effort and did not damage the finish.
