In Memory Of Charlie (Cocker Spaniel Mix)

(In Memory Of) Charlie at a year and a half. He was a Cocker Spaniel and Hound. We received Charlie as wrinkley "little" pup from my in-laws when they adopted another pup at the same time.

Charlie weighed in at almost ten pounds. The other pup was a teacup chihuahua, not a fair "match." So we took Charlie, who promptly fell asleep in my arms and began to snore.

He loved to play with his "big brother" Bogey, who oddly enough was also a chihuahua/daschund mix but still Charlie knew Bogey was alpha dog. We lost our "Charlie Boy" to a hard fought battle with Parvo a year ago. He was a wonderful dog and we have fostered others since but none showed as much love or personality as our Charlie boy.

Today's Tips:

Organizing the Pantry

I organize my pantry in alphabetical order. When I get home from the grocery I put things away in a certain order. Especially canned foods. I put beans, corn greens, potatoes, tomatoes etc. They are stacked in alphabetical order so when I need to know what I have I just check the row and know when I am getting low on a certain item.

It helps to have it this way so you will not have to move cans over to search for a can of potatoes. They will be in the same place each time I buy them. My spices are also in alphabetical order, this sure saves a lot of time, just grab the "Ginger" in the "G's" and go on. You'd be surprised how many steps this saves.

Sanding Sponge for Foot Callouses

My feet get calloused in the summer. I have found that the best solution is a medium grit sanding sponge that you purchase in the hardware or home improvement store. It molds to your foot and works especially well on heels. And best of all, the last one I bought was only $1.88! Try it, you will like it!

Random Drug Testing for Teens

When my kids were in high school I instituted random drug testing at my house. It was really cheap to set up and I feel like in the long run, I was saved an incalculably amount because one of my kids lived in the "gray". My teens were normal everyday teens with the usual number of friends, made decent grades and all.

After the first random test (did I mention how shocked my son was?), my son had a friend that I saw daily at my house that never came again; we just never saw him again. I asked my son and he always said "I don't know what happened to him".

About 2 years later I read his obituary in the newspaper, he had committed suicide in a drug rehab program. By all accounts, he was a normal teen with the usual number of friends and he also and made good grades.

Now that my son is grown I ask him about the random testing (we had about 3 in all). He said he was so mad at me at first, but he was able to use it as an excuse to not use drugs because he had random testing at his house.

My grown son tells me now that he thinks I was pretty smart. But he has challenged me and asked what would I have done. I just smile and tell him I would have tied him to his bed until he was 24 and we laugh together.

Making a Fruit Fly "Trap"

There is an easy and very inexpensive way to rid your home of fruit flies. Simply build a fruit fly trap. All you need to build a fruit fly trap is a banana or two, a knife, some cling wrap or similar plastic wrap, a few rubber bands, and old plastic jars or bowls that can be thrown away after use.

Using an empty mayonnaise jar, plastic butter bowl, or plastic lunch meat container will work. Don't use any container that you want to keep. Be sure the container is deep enough to hold a few slices of banana.

After you have your necessary supplies together, simply slice up the bananas and divide the slices into several containers. Place the cling wrap or other plastic wrapping tightly over the opening of the jar or bowl, and place a rubber band around it to hold it snuggly in place.

Using the knife's point, poke a few tiny holes into the plastic wrap. Make them very tiny. The fruit flies can get in, but once in, they can't get out. You now have fruit fly traps that will trap the fruit flies and remove them from your home.

An easy way to separate coffee filters is to take the whole stack and turn them inside out. Then they separate easily.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

During a sermon a mother with a fidgety seven-year-old boy told me how she finally got her son to sit still and be quiet.

"About halfway through the sermon, she leaned over and whispered,

'If you don't be quiet, the Pastor is going to lose his place and will have to start his sermon all over again!'

"It worked."

What Breed is My Dog?

What breed is my pup? He is about 2.5 months in the picture. Since then he has added about 5 pounds and his ears are higher now at 3 months. I did not see either parents but the lady who I adopted him from did see the mother and she was confident that she was a GSD. We have no idea about the father.

His last weight was approx. 15 lb. at 3 months. He is a very smart puppy and is starting to get his stubborn attitudes as most 3 month puppies do, but he will learn with his training. We think he must have some Rottie, Doberman, and maybe American Coonhound. All opinions are welcome. Thanks!

Brown Dots on My Car

I have small brown dots on my car. I think it's from the tree I park below. I have tried pure acetone, hand sanitizer, alcohol, and WD-40 but nothing works. I try to scrape it off with a credit card but then I'm left with a white dot. These dots are all over my car. Thank goodness it's blue and not white.

Recipe for a Dog With Kidney Problems

I have been feeding my dog with kidney failure the following recipe: five ounces of ground round, two boiled eggs, two cups of cooked rice, three slices of white bread and chicken. For a couple weeks he has not wanted to eat the food I cook for him. He will eat other food though. Would there be a problem substituting potato for the rice in his recipe? Thank you.

Having Chickens as Pets

Are there any chicken lovers out there? It would be nice to chat with other chicken, guinea, duck, geese and pigeon fanciers! Or any other yard bird! As of right now, I have 4 guineas, 3 bantams, 2 brown leghorns, 2 gold leghorns, 2 New Hampshire blacks, 4 Rhode Island reds, 2 Easter chickens and one brown leghorn with vertigo that we keep in a rabbit cage. They all have names and personalities to boot!

The little lady with vertigo would have died if we had not rescued her from a feed store. She can't keep her balance well and she was in a large aquarium with loads of guineas. They trampled her constantly! She is rotten from the attention we give her and seems perfectly content in her cage or staying on the deck with us, away from the other birds. She's getting stronger and is gaining better muscle control and balance. "Gotta love the birds!" My dog is jealous of the birds and even eats their food! I see her outside, fighting over chicken and dumplings, scraps of all sorts that I give the chickens. They're fun to watch.

Travel Tips for Gatlinburg, TN

I am looking for info on Gatlinburg, TN. I especially want info on hotels/inns that offer suites with 2 bedrooms (not just 2 beds in one room). I have googled and looked at loads of sites but am coming up with little to start with. I don't really want a condo but may have to go that route. I would also like tips on what to see and do with a family of 2 adults and 2 kids a 15 year old girl and a 13 year old boy. We are not real big on hiking yet. We are new to TN and the humidity is killing us! Thanks for any help.

Painting Lower Kitchen Cabinets a Different Colour

I'm planning on painting my kitchen cabinets and was thinking of leaving the top cabinets their original off-white colour and painting the bottom cupboards a dark brown. I love the richness of the brown colour, but I don't want to paint all the cupboards with it, because it will make my tiny kitchen seem too small.

My problem is that although I think I like this idea, I'm having trouble finding examples of kitchens that have been painted the same way with the top and bottom cupboards different colours. Does anyone know where I can find any pictures like this, or has anyone painted their kitchen the same way? I'd really like to get a better idea of what it would look like before I spend the time and money. Thanks.
