Make Your Own Can Drainer

I found this expensive single can drainer at a local thrift shop. While it was a fluke to find that particular thing that I needed, it was not the best part of this tip.

If you only have one thing to drain, why dirty up a colander or something similar. And we all know how dangerous it is to have the lid sticking up when you are trying to do something with it.

So, I was giving Kizzy and Gimpy their treat today, and happened to wash it and put it in the recycling.

And guess what it landed on?

Yep, on top of an empty can of peas. So, I got out my hammer and a nail and made my own. This will probably work for Tuna cans too, but I didn't have one.

Simply pound some holes in the bottom and you have a strainer you can put over just about any standard veggie or fruit can that needs to drain the water or juice.

N-JOY!

Tara (Pomeranian)

Tara is an 8 year old mini Pomeranian. She was 6 years old when I got her. The breeder had finished breeding from her and she needed a new home.

She likes beach walks and gets a lot of pleasure in playing tag with her daughter, which I also have. She also likes to be pushed about in her pram.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Pay Your Child Support

Win the war in the end! Pay your child support. Non custodial parents: when your children are grown they will respect you so much more if they know you paid your part to get them raised.

If you are married to someone that owes child support, make it your responsibility to see that your step children are taken care of financially. If you owe back child support that means the custodial parent has given you a loan, pay them back.

Of course, the custodial parent is not spending the money exactly like you would spend it and they might appear to have more than you but if you pay you can ultimately hold your head up and your place as their parent (notice this is non gender). If your circumstances have changed since your order, file the necessary paperwork and have your child support revised (you can do this without an attorney), but do you part!

A Hook for Empty Hangers in the Closet

I have always hated looking through my closet for the proper coat hanger to hang my clothes. So I have placed a hook inside my closet. Each time I take something off of a hanger, I put the coat hanger on this hook. It is so nice to have the proper hanger waiting me when I go to hang my clothes. Try this. I hope you find this a time saver also.

Storing Gift Wrap Under The Bed

I use one of those under the bed storage boxes for organizing my gift wrapping. Along with all the wrapping paper (included some I have recycled). I keep scissors and cellophane tape, ribbons, sticky labels and card tags along with birthday cards and a few left over Christmas cards.

It's quite spacious so I have also only now started to collect some gifts ready for this year's anniversaries and birthdays and I keep those inside it too. It fits under the sofa bed in my lounge so I still have space under my bed.

All that I need for gift wrapping all in one place!

Use T-Shirts as Car Seat Covers

With several dogs in and out of my car several times a week, or daily, I needed something to protect the front seats from their rubbing fur and other stuff onto the upholstery. Seat covers were absurdly expensive so I now use the cheapest t-shirts I can find or use old ones. I found that sleeveless is best, and either dark colors or festive ones that just need to be washed more often. I use old bath mats for the seats in front (have found great ones at our local dump), and the back sports an old bedspread or blanket that's tucked in here and there.

Summertime Activities for Your Children

Keeping your school age children happy, physically active, and learning during the summer.

I am a retired teacher and always used to say that we should float a bond referendum for teacher pay raises the second week of August! Parents who are not accustomed having the children at home all day have to adjust their schedules in order to fit in the needs of their youngsters. Below are some suggestions one might consider:

Vacation Bible Schools - All children are welcomed at these, not just church members. If you are taking your children, round up some of their playmates to join them. (You'll make some Mom's day!)

Morning Movies for Kids - Our local theater has a kids program at 10:00 a.m. during the summer. Because of the popularity of this program, they are now offering it several times a week. The admission is very little and they have a great concessions special.

Visit Your Local Library - Kids can be entertained for hours in the quiet air-conditioned venue offered by the library. See if yours has a special craft/story time program which your children might enjoy. If you don't have a computer at home, take them to the library. It's free and they'll know how to operate them.

Take a Field Trip to a Nearby Park - There are many beautiful public parks that offer more than just playground equipment. Often there are nature trails with the plants/trees identified, ducks to feed (take your stale bread and leftover popcorn), places for a picnic and all for free. Many state parks have rangers there to present free informative stories about the site.

Set Aside a Quiet Time Each Afternoon - Encourage them to read or rest during this time; no TV and only quiet music. Post a chart with numbered lines on it in an easily accessible place. Make a chart for each child and have them record the names of the books they read. Have them give an oral report to you and their siblings.

For younger children you can make a bookworm by cutting out colorful body segments and adding the name of each book as they read it. They love to see it grow. For your non-readers, make them one with the books they have sat and listened to you read to them. Your children will be much better prepared to start school again in the fall if you continue this practice through the summer. You could also work out some kind of point system for a more tangible reward if you choose.

Swimming Outings - Most children love to splash in the water. Have them run through the sprinkler when you're watering your garden or lawn. For even more fun, join them for a walk in the rain (not a thunderstorm, of course) with flip flops, clothing that it's okay to get wet, and no umbrella. They'll love to see you showing your kid side and you'll have some good laughs together.

Farmer's Market or Pick-It-Yourself Farm - If possible, plant some easy to grow vegetables in your yard or in containers on the deck or patio. Potatoes are a good choice because they require little, if any, attention and digging them is like a treasure hunt. If you don't want to plant your own garden, take them to a farm where they will be allowed to pick what they will be having for dinner.

Plan a Scavenger Hunt - Adjust the clues to suit the age of each child. Invite some friends over for even more fun.

Find Other Parents Whom You Trust and Do an Exchange - That way you'll each have a day off to catch up on whatever you choose to spend it doing.

Enjoy these days because you'll miss them when those little ones are grow and no longer need your suggestions for entertainment.

Source: Years of experience as a camp counselor, teacher, a stay-at-home mother and the "Mommy who likes to." (A title given to me by my son when he was in grade school. After a couple of exhausting weeks of grade-parenting, supervising their friends who came to swim or play, transporting many whose parents couldn't, baking cookies for school parties, etc., I slipped and said something I wished I hadn't the minute it slipped out of my mouth. "Why am I always the one who...? My son replied, "Because you're the mommy who likes to." That makes it all worth it.

Washable Marker on a Leather Seat

My 4 yrs old daughter accidentally wrote a long line on my friend's car leather gray seat. She used a purple RoseArt bold washable marker. I feel so badly since I'm the adult and I feel responsible. It happened 3 days ago and she only found out this afternoon. She said she'll bring it to the professional cleaner and will let me know. How else could we remove the mark? I will appreciate any help. Thank you.

GE Ice Maker Overfilling Tray

I have a GE Profile side by side refrigerator that has an ice maker that keeps overfilling the tray. It just keeps cycling water. I just recently replaced a small gear inside the ice maker housing that had several teeth missing. That did not correct the problem. I have been told that I may have to replace the head assembly, or the switches that control the fill cycle. I do not not know where these are located. Can someone help me fix this problem?

Refilling Glade Plug-ins

I've read the recipe for refilling reed diffusers. Its a great idea since the good ones are quite expensive and the ones from a dollar store just don't work all that well. My question is, does anyone know if you can use this same recipe for refilling the bottles for plug-in air fresheners, or does anyone have a recipe?

It makes me angry that the companies like Glade, etc. sell the bottles only 3/4 full. The prices are quite high when you have a few of these in the house. I have found the tops do come off so could be refilled. I'm tossing out 4 - 6 of the glass bottles every month or so. It is terrible to fill the trash with them!

My Debit Card Was Stolen and Used Online

I have recently had my credit/debit card number stolen and used online. Between May 27-31st over $1000.00 of charges were made. I was alerted to this by a letter from my bank saying that I was .32 cents overdrawn. I got all the places online that were charged and the bank told me that there was nothing they could do to help get the money back.

I have gotten back around $300.00 but the big problem is zynga.com, they say that any fraud will be refunded in 10 days on the website. I was told by a rep. to send over the bank statement with the charges and I did that on Wed. of last week, and still have'nt heard from them. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
