Daily Thrifty Tips - November 15, 2005

Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Four, Number 271, November 15, 2005
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

First of all, today's sponsor is the THE CAR BUYER'S BIBLE. It's a book by Robin Segal. She has set up a special promotion where you can buy her book today and get a bunch of interesting freebies. You can find more information in the sponsor spot in this newsletter.

Our latest contests end tonight at midnight.

Tip Contest!
http://www.thriftyfun.com/post_contest.ldml

Photo Contest!
http://www.thriftyfun.com/post_photocontest.ldml

We still have not announced the winners of the last contest because we are still publishing photos from it. Winners of the contest that ended on October 31st will be announced next Wednesday and winners of the contest that ends tonight will be announced next friday. And, of course, we will start a new contest tomorrow.

Lastly, we have been receving numerous requests each day from people who are looking for assistance during the holiday season. We are not able to offer people direct help, we don't have the resources, but there should be charities at the local level that can help these people. What we are hoping to do is create a listing of charities that are available in each state in the US (most of our requests are from people in the US). If you know of any charities in your local area that help people around Christmas time, please post the charity's name and contact information on the page that we have created for that state. We have set up the list of states here:

http://www.thriftyfun.com/Christmas_Charities_246_2926.html

We are also publishing 10 states a day as Reader's Requests. With your help, we hope to have a nice listing of charities to help these people by the end of the week.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Make Your Concrete Patio Look Like Brick!

I painted the entire patio with a grey porch/patio paint and was not happy with the look. So I next used narrow masking tape to tape off the brick pattern. I then used a red brick color and an old paintbrush to paint the bricks (I mixed a little black acrylic paint with the red to make it look more authentic). It has worn fairly well and only needed a few touch ups each summer.

I love the way my patio looks now and it sure beats the cost of installing brick pavers!

Mighty Zues (Brindlequin Great Dane)

Heavenly's Mighty Zues is 6 years old and still got it. He produced 11 puppies in April and He is a Proud Daddy of 11 Born Oct 13th 2005.

Zues is a Brindlequin Great Dane. I bought him from a lady who had to get rid of him because he did not like a new male taking over his job. (All of her females were his).

He loves to be loved on. He loves to run and play with his 2 girls we kept from his litter in April. He loves his Chew Bones. He's a big boy.

Plywood Garden Art

Picture of garden art by hubby and me. I use a projector to put the pattern on plywood. Hubby cuts it out and I paint them with exterior white paint. Then use acrylic craft paint and when dry I spray with clear sealer.

Tips for When You Are Being Held Up

I was held up at gunpoint last night as i was leaving my job at the doctors office. Yes it was very scary and no i am not hurt. I want to encourage everyone to listen to the police officers on the tv about guidelines for what do when this happens.

I did some of the things and wanted to relay them.

  • Scream make noise.

  • Have your keys in your hand before leaving the building. This way when I threw my purse I still had my keys which were for my car but also I could get back into work to safety.

  • Throw the pocketbook away from yourself and run the other way.

  • Run away - it is harder to shoot a moving target than something or someone who is standing still.

  • Get to a phone and call 911. Be calm as you can be on the phone. No I was not calm. I was sobbing and screaming some. My coworker was still outside.

  • The other thing they tell you to do is to remember what the perp is wearing. All I could see was a dark colored everything. I couldn't even see the whites of his eyes but my coworker and I are alive.

We thought on our feet.

By Sandy from Baltimore, MD

Editor's Note: So glad to hear you are alright Sandy. Here are some more tips from the Seattle Police Department's website.

Responding to a Confrontation:
  • If a robber grabs your bag, resist the impulse to play tug of war. If you hang on, chances are you will be knocked down, hit, or kicked and the robber will get your bag anyway.

  • Victims sometimes tell a robber they have no money. This technique may backfire. It is safer to give up a few dollars. Carry a little money in an accessible place for just this purpose. Keep it separate from other funds.

  • If someone demands your property and displays or implies in anyway that they have a weapon, hand the bag or wallet to them.

Be sure to check out your local police departments website, I am sure they have some tips as well.

Return Addresses

When you receive some snail mail from a friend, cut off their return address and save. Use it on your next item you're mailing to them. Just tape it to the package or envelope. Save your time not having to handwrite it all out. I keep a small tin in my desk drawer for just that very reason.

Turkey Baking Tip

At Thanksgiving and Christmas I buy the biggest turkey I can find - usually 20-25 pounds. Then I stuff it about 9 pm the night before and put it in a 350 degree F oven for one hour. After that I turn it down to 250 degrees for the rest of the night and wake up to the most fabulous smells ever!

My mom used to do it this way and I have always done it this way and no one has even gotten sick. In the morning you will have a pan full of juice to suction out for gravy and then depending on the size of the bird, I might turn it up to 350 again for an hour or so before I serve it.

Always use a deep pan to catch the juices and cover with foil.
Oh and I peel my potatoes and let them sit in water overnight in a cool spot (either fridge or in the garage) so all I have to do next morning is cook them! Saves so much time! Enjoy your holidays!
Enjoy the holidays!

Gift Idea for Teenager

For a great gift to a teenager, go the to bank and ask if they have any uncirculated dollar bills. I think that I used 50 one dollar bills.

Take them to a printing office and ask that they make them into a tablet, gluing one edge. Slip these into a vinyl check book cover and give as a gift. He or she will get a kick out of tearing off a few at the local store to make a purchase!

Christmas Gift Idea - Address Labels

If you're stumped on what Christmas gift to buy for someone or you're running low on cash AND have a computer and printer or know of someone who does, make up decorated address labels for gifts or stocking stuffers. Your recipient will be pleased with the idea that you thought of them enough to do this. It's a gift that we ALL can use and won't be wasted. Just make sure of all correct spellings beforehand. This gift would be welcome, also, at any time of year!

Cooking Half a Turkey

Turkeys are so cheap right now. If you have a small family or even if you are going out for T-giving dinner, do buy a turkey anyway. The butcher can saw the frozen bird in half for you, thaw half to cook now, and wrap and stick the other half in the freezer to use a couple of months later. Turkey is so good and good for you-take advantage of this inexpensive bargain!

Product that Reuses Remnants of Soap

Does anyone know of a product that re-uses remnants of soap. When it's ready to be thrown away, there is a device to put the slivers into, and suds up with water. I had seen one about 15 years ago when recycling was unheard of. Now, with children, and bills, every little bit we can save helps. If anyone has any information regarding a product like this, I'd be so thankful! It mounts beside a kitchen sink.

Thanks!

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs - Fight Global Warming One (CFL) Bulb at a Time
By Ellen Brown

According to the EPA, if every household in the U.S. replaced one light bulb with one of their ENERGY STAR rated compact fluorescent bulbs, it would be the pollution equivalent of pulling one million cars off the road. That sounds easy enough right, so why isn't everyone doing it?
