Craft Project: Turkey Treats

This is such a fun project! Do it with your kids or by yourself. Great for the Thanksgiving table, or to make as a treat for your child's class.

Approximate Time: 15 minutes

Supplies:

  • chocolate chip cookies
  • chocolate icing
  • candy corn
  • bite-size Oreos
  • chocolate candy ball

Instructions:

  1. Spread icing/frosting over the surface of two chocolate chip cookies. Place six candy corn "feathers" around one of the cookies and then stick the end of this cookie into the icing spread on the second chocolate chip cookie so it stands up like turkey feathers.
  2. Place one bits-size Oreo onto the icing of the bottom cookie in front of the feathers. Spread a little icing on a second bite-size Oreo and stick it on top of the first, using the icing as glue. This is the turkey's body.
  3. Use icing to glue a chocolate candy ball head on top of the Oreos.
  4. Cut two white pieces off two candy corns for eyes and attach them to the head with a dab of icing.
  5. Cut the yellow part off one candy corn. Discard the yellow and use a dab of icing to attach the remaining section to the candy ball for the beak.

Sunny Lisa (Vizsla)

Sunny Lisa is an 8 year old Vizsla. I got her 8 years ago.

She likes getting in the garbage, running inside or outside, eating, and lots of napping. She has eaten a 1 dollar bill, I had it in my hand and she snatched it! She also gets jealous easy. And she HATES other dogs!

Craft Project: Plaid Heart

Here is another ornament I made and am sharing with you. This one is a Plaid Heart.

You can make it with any fabric. Glitter felt is cheap and fun, as is fabric that has holiday prints on it.

Choose the size of heart you want. This one is 3.5 by 3.5 inches. Stiffen the fabric with a 3 parts glue to 1 part water mix. When dried, the fabric cuts like paper.

Lay your stiffened heart on felt that goes with your color choices. Crimp around the edges for a cool look.

Sew with coordinating crochet thread in a running stitch around the edges. Cool glue a ribbon and button on the front, plus a hanger on the back

Enjoy!!

NOTE: With just a little work, you can also cut an oval or heart out of the middle, insert a photo in between the fabric and the felt, with a bit of clear plastic to protect it, and "encase it" in the ornament.

What relative wouldn't love that!!

Family: Emily In Her Heirloom Dress

This picture is of my granddaughter Emily who was born 9/15/08; she is wearing her mother's dress. The dress is white and has a matching lace blanket. I have a photo of Emily's big sister Hannah wearing the same dress. I plan to have it monogrammed with the names of the mother and daughters and framed in a shadow box.

Preparing for Tough Financial Times

In the event you find yourself unprepared for the financial hard times we are facing right now, Don't panic, here are some things you can begin to do to help weather the storm.

  1. Don't PANIC. Panic always leads to poor decisions
  2. Stay invested. Markets fluctuate. Always have, always will.
  3. Don't obsess. DON'T check your balances every day. This will help keep you sane.
  4. Live within your income, spend less than you take home.
  5. Create a written budget.
  6. Stick to the budget, avoid impulse purchases.
  7. Save something each pay period (even if it is only $10). This will allow you to build an emergency fund to avoid financial catastrophes that are sure to make an appearance in the future.
  8. Limit your use of credit cards and other debt vehicles.
  9. Buy used (clothing, card, etc).
  10. Remember that GOD really owns it, he is just letting you manage it for awhile!

Gift Idea: Bedroom Makeover

This is our second year doing this. Last year we did a bedroom makeover for our youngest daughter. She was locked out of her room until Christmas Eve. We are a family of 6 and everyone did something to the room. Our youngest son liked the idea so much that he asked to have his room done this year.

Reusing Wrapping Paper

You get a gift that is wrapped with beautiful paper or a beautifully decorated gift bag with lovely tissue paper and you would like to save and reuse the gift paper or the tissue paper, but it's all crumpled and creased.
Well here's a way to make it look practically like new again. IRON IT!

Yes, ironing with a Medium HOT iron and steam will take almost all the wrinkles and creases out and make it reusable. CAUTION: Keep the iron moving on the paper or it will burn.

Watch Out For Counterfeit Internet Coupons

I just wanted to alert everyone about some counterfeit coupons from the internet that are going around. I work in a grocery store and my boss showed us these coupons. A certain word in the coupon appears twice in the coupon, it is something like "vrylmkt", as I said it will appear twice somewhere on the bottom of the coupon. If you see this word get rid of the coupon.

Stick Old Photos to Magnets

My best friend is a photography major. We were going through pictures one night and came across a great idea. We went to Wal-Mart and bought a pack of business card magnets in the school supplies section. We took wallet size pictures and placed them on the sticky part of the magnet. Just trim to fit and you have a great gift for parents, grandparents, and anyone else that you think would enjoy!

Stacks Books Under Lamps

With the cute lamps that I'd like for my living room being to expensive for me right now, I have to make due with what I have, so I've taken little, less expensive lamps and put them on books! It looks real cute and all you have to do is pile-up some books, what ever height you'd like and put the lamp on top. Hard cover, paperback, cookbooks; they all work!

My daughter has started do it also. She's not much of a reader now, working and being busy with children, so she picked some up at yard sales and library sales! Hope this helps someone out!

Share Expensive Gardening Tools With Neighbors

My friend, who lives in another town, says she and her neighbors all share their lawn and gardening tools. This way no one has to be out the purchase price of expensive items, like lawn mowers, garden tillers, leaf blowers, etc., unless they just want to be. Clever idea!

Cleaning Burner Pans With Dishwashing Detergent

Put 1/2 cup of any powdered dishwashing soap into a roaster pan full of water. Stir; then add the burner pans. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 30 minutes. Cool and you should be able to just wipe off all the crud. If especially bad, take a brillo pad to it BEFORE you wipe it. Afterwards, wipe your burner pans with Crisco and the next time they will be even easier to clean.

Freeze Leftover Sauce in an Ice Cube Tray

If you have left over tomato sauce from an 8 ounce can, don't throw it away or stash it in the fridge where it could be forgotten. Instead, I pour the rest into an ice cube tray. After they're frozen, pop them into a ziplock bag. Whenever you need just a little tomato sauce, you have them right in the freezer. No need to open another can and no waste!

Product Review: Freschetta Amore Frozen Pizza

We like carry out pizzas but usually can't afford those prices. When we're in the mood for pizza. We go for those "Freschetta Amore" pizzas, in the grocery store freezer section. They're the next best thing to carry out pizza. I've never had a frozen pizza taste like a carry out pizza before purchasing this brand. The pepperoni is good, but we prefer the supreme. So the next time you're wanting pizza, try this kind, you'll be surprised that it's not your basic frozen pizza!

Keep Spare Clean Ketchup Lid

I keep a spare ketchup lid in my kitchen drawer. When it gets sloppy, I just swap lids and put the dirty one in the dishwasher. I do the same for the ranch dressing. It's so easy, my kids will even swap it out. If you don't have a dishwasher you could drop it in a dirty glass with some water, and wash it up when you do the dishes.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

I was shopping for art supplies at my friend's craft store. As she was checking me out, my friend asked, "Have you gotten thinner?"

Flattered, I replied, "Why, yes. I've been on this diet for a couple of weeks now and I've lost a few pounds."

My friend rolled her eyes and said, "I meant paint thinner."

Recommendations for New Cookware

I am looking for some new cookware. Everything I have is mis-matched or scratched or just plain ugly. It doesn't have to be really inexpensive. I want something that will last. I am so tired of having to get new cookware every year or so. I would like something easy to clean, but I don't want anything with Teflon or T-Fal or anything that will scratch and come off. It is so unhealthy!

I know that I can count on all my ThriftyFun "friends". I want to research everything before I buy, even if it's not until after Christmas. I just want to start the new year off with new cookware that I don't have to fuss at every time I use it. Thanks.

Brownie Pan Recommendations

What is the best pan to cook brownies in? I use a small nonstick square 8x8 baking pan by Bakers ($6.99). I buy the small brownie or muffin mix in the pack by Pillsbury. The nonstick surface seem to chip after using them a few times and I have to keep replacing the pan. I don't know if its the pan or the kids not using it properly. Please advise.

Should I be worried about a small burn in Microfiber couch? I have a very small burn in my microfiber couch. I don't want the hole to get larger but don't want to ruin it by trying to fix it if I don't need to. Can I Find Better Health Insurance?

My husband's work is changing our insurance to a high deductible ($2600 for the family) insurance. It will start in Jan. I am looking for anyone who has gotten their own insurance that is better. If we go with this I will be terrified to take any of us to the doctors, as we would not be able to afford it. Trouble With Pampered Chef Cookie Press

Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong before I have a temper tantrum and break my cookie press? I have a Pampered Chef press and I lost the directions in a recent move. I've tried using another recipe I found and it's not working. I either literally blow the plunger end off the thing (dough too cold?) or when it comes out the other end it won't come off.

I have to manually scoop it off which ruins the design. I'm not even sure which end of the design plate goes out. There is a difference in the sides of it. I've only used it one other time several years ago and remember having trouble then but finally figured it out. However, this year I'm older and less patient or something. Can somebody please help me?

Smoke Alarms Won't Shut Off

About a year ago we had a severe storm that tore a 20 ft hole in our roof. Contractors came out, and repaired the roof, drywall, and paint. Now it's as good as new. Fast forward to yesterday I'm on the computer working and my hard wired smoke detectors all start going off. I quickly ran through the house checking for fire/smoke, thankfully I found nothing. I then contemplated one of the batteries went dead so I pull all the batteries, still no luck.

Next, I went to the circuit breaker box and selected multiple GFI breakers to off position. After waiting a few minutes I switched back on the breakers and they started going off again. Being it was late on Saturday and we were not in danger of a fire I decided I would research further and possible call an electrician for Monday.

After searching the internet on this subject I've come up with the following repair opportunities:

  • replace batteries and check
  • replace detectors and check
  • call electrician and spend min $500

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Oh yes, I'm not sure if the home damage occurring is relative, I personally don't believe so or I would have had an issue before now. Thank you.
