Line bottom of greased 12x9 inch baking dish with apples; cut margarine into small pieces. Add sugar over apples, then margarine. Mix vanilla and water and pour over apples. Topping: Cream all ingredients and spread evenly over pie. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.

I really like apple crumb pie, but I need a recipe for a crumb topping that stays nice and tender with soft, fat crumbs. Mine either melts into a thin sugary crust or has crunchy crumbs like a cookie. Appreciate any ideas.

Bake the topping separate on a cookie sheet then add to the baked pie.
