The first question I ask all of my brides is," when you close your eyes, what does your perfect reception look like? What does it feel like?" Then we go from there. Colors are helpful, how formal an affair do you want, and do you want different or traditional. One helpful thing to do is grab paper and a pen and just write down random things you would like to have at the reception venue. It will all come together, good luck, and enjoy this part.
You could do what my friend did last year for her wedding. She used plan glass vases and bowls, some she had and some she bought and put colorfully candy in it and then put in a few artifical flowers in the vases. She placed one on each table. Then she used 4 different colors of plates, cups, napkins, table cloths, etc that coordinated with the candy. She strung christmas clear lights up through out the room. The table where the bride and groom sit at each end was a collage of pictures of them by themselves as kids, and in the middle was their engagement picture in a frame that you can sign. It was a small wedding and reception so if you are having a bigger wedding you might want to use a guest book for family and friends to sign.
