Taking Care of Clematis

The theory that clematis like their feet cool and their head in the sun is true, so be sure to put several inches of mulch at the base of the vine.

Feed with liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season.

A newly planted clematis needs lots of water to get established especially if your planting it along a wall or fance, or there is a dry spell.

I prune my clematis back in mid-May here in Ontario, Canada. Zone 5

Does anyone know if there is a way to propagate clematis from a stem? (Or if there is any way to do so.) I have a fence that is ready and waiting!

Clematis need good drainage. I put gravel down below a bit, then dirt etc.. Also shale rock is better than mulch - really keeps the heat out.

Feed it food for tomato plants, they love it. A handful of lime around the clematis in the early spring is good too because they like a sweet soil.

Growing Clematis in a Hot Climate

View of plants and a garden shovel in Turkish garden area.Is it possible to grow clematis in a hot climate? We grew them very successfully in the UK so have some experience, but would appreciate any tips for growing them in Turkey. We live in a forest by a river, but although it's not as hot as some places it does still reach 50c at the height of summer.

The only thing you have to remember is that their feet need to be shaded and water often and you will do fine. the top likes the sun and the roots like being shaded whether by another plant or with mulch. I mulch heavily and water often in hot weather and have no problem. During the 90 degree weather here in the summer it doesn't bloom as much or as big of blooms but still showey and I am happy with it. Hope this helps.
