Cute Bird Halloween Costumes

For Halloween Costumes, I use sweatsuits/jackets/sweatpants that I already have on hand and decorate them. This year, I used boas that I purchased on sale for $3.49 each, and sheets of felt $.12 each (each costume used one boa and 2 sheets of felt) for an over all cost of $3.73 per costume. I already had the pom pom balls, goggle eyes and batting on hand.

My son was a cardinal, I free handed the image onto a piece of red felt, then cut out two pieces, sewed it together and stuffed it. I then stitched it to the hood of his red jacket. Added the feathers. Same for my daughters.

Here's another entry with no description. Unfortunately when we changed our system for photo entries, this one got lost. It looks like another pet helping with the Halloween decorations. If it is your entry, please write us and let us know more about it.

Brindi (Basenji/Terrier)

"Girl's Best Friend"

Brindi, basenji/terrier mix was found on the highway in 2001 when we brought her home, starving. Brindi's favorite pasttime is snuggling, but she blends in so well with our bedding that it is sometimes hard to find her!

Planting Tip for Less Weeds

A great and easy way to get rid of weeds in your garden. After you have prepared your soil and have planted your lovely plants, take all your newspapers and lay them on top of the soil. Piece them together all around your plants. (Only use the black and white print not the colored ads.) Next dampen the paper with the water hose, then scatter your mulch on top. Not only will this kill the weeds but the paper will biodegrade and help your plants. I have done this process with out weeding my garden for weeks! Happy planting! By Linda from Bossier City, LA

Having the Correct Brush for Makeup

Having the correct brush really does make a difference to one's appearance. I used to think that almost any brush would do as long as it was more or less the correct size, but have since realized through demos, trial and error that there is no substitute for having the best brush for the job.

I solved it by having my makeup done for free at an Ulta store (the store in your neighborhood might require an advance appointment), and then buying the same brushes that the clerk used. She helped me locate them in the store and pointed out some equally good but lesser priced substitues for some of them. I didn't spend all that much and it made a world of difference. Bought blush, loose powder and a large finishing powder brush. I already had a contouring brush at home that was suitable.

Using Up Face Powder

To be able to use up solid face powder when just a little is left in the compact and it's too expensive to throw out, do the following outdoors or where you won't mind a little powder blowing about when you open the blender.

Scrape all of the powder out of the compact, put in a small blender and pulverize. Put in a dish and use as loose face powder.

I did this with powders of various shades stirred to blend together with a spoon and now I have been able to use them all. No streaks show up.

I dip my loose powder style brush into the powder, tap the stick on the side of the container so that the loose powder falls back into the pot and then swirl it on my face. Re-dip, tap and swirl as needed to finish the job.

Make Your Own Fire Starters

I found this tip at make-stuff.com, it is a great site.

"Fill an empty roll with dried leaves in the fall. Wrap it with newspaper, 4 inches longer than the roll, and twist the ends of the paper, for easy lighting. If you wrap them with decorative paper and put them in a basket they make a nice accessory to a fire place. They can also be covered with Christmas wrapping paper for the holidays. Having Bibs Ready to Go

To save myself from running around during feeding time I secure bibs on the back of the highchair so that they are ready to go. I also string a small laundry bag for the dirty ones. Most high chairs have a bar in the back that allow you to open the bib and secure it there.

Cat Appears to be Spraying

cute orange catI have a 1 year old male cat, he was spayed when he was 6 months old but recently every time he is close to me meows a lot and raises his tail and makes an action like he is spraying me but nothing comes out. I have see him do that with some of the furniture as well. Is that normal and why is he doing it?

Painting Window Shades

What about painting window shades? I am thinking of changing my bedroom comforter. The wall color will be OK but the shades will no longer work. They are decorative shades with some fringe on the bottom. Any suggestions short of buying new shades? These shades are about 45 or 50 inches wide so a bit more costly than the regular size.

Bugs Eating My Roses

I have some sort of little bug with wings that literally eats the center of the stem out of my rose bushes. It goes from the top of the cut off stem down the center and eats it leaving a hole. It is making each branch that it attacks die. I have put toothpicks in the holes, I have painted over the holes and they drill through it! What are these things? Thanks!
