Craft: Santa Gourd

Ho..Ho..Ho! Santa Gourd. He is just the cutest gourd I have ever painted for the holidays. I do sell tutorials on him, if anyone is interested.

He makes a great centerpiece for a holiday table. Enjoy!

Safely Disposing of Medications

Until recently I didn't have to worry about this question because I hadn't had to take anything except for vitamins most of my life. In the past four months, I now have a few different medications that are not working for me or had a bad reaction to so did some searching about what to do with them.

To keep our waterways and public drinking water safe, to keep medications out of the wrong hands and to ensure your general identity and medical identity are safe here is the FDA link regarding how to properly dispose of stale dated or unused over the counter and prescription medications:

Use Broom Handle for Extension

A small nail tacked into the top of a broom handle can serve numerous purposes over time. I have used a 1" brad in my broom handle to hang light items from nails up high on the porch, etc. No need to drag out a ladder or chair to reach!

Exfoliate with Sugar and Lotion

The other day, I really wanted to exfoliate my skin. So I took a couple of tablespoons of granulate sugar, and my favorite body lotion, and I just squeezed enough in my hand to put on my legs. Then I took a big pinch of sugar and rubbed it together in my hand. I used this to rub on my legs. Afterward, I just rinsed them.

It works great, and makes your skin so smooth!

Use Plastic Coffee Containers for Rechargable Batteries

I use the red and green coffee plastic containers in the following way:.

When our rechargeable batteries are dead, I have instructed everyone to place them in the red containers. Containers can be marked for the size of battery.

Once I have charged them, they go in the green containers. No more guess work involved!

Espresso Grind for Ants

Very finely ground (espresso fine) caffeinated coffee, before brewing, works wonders on killing and eliminating ants. Apparently their systems cannot handle the caffeine and they die. We applied ground coffee to a few trouble spots in our organic produce and foods store, left it for a couple of days and haven't had problems with ants since.

We used organic coffee since that's what we had, but I doubt that it makes a difference. Buy cheap espresso beans, grind them very fine, sprinkle on and around the trouble spots, leave it alone for a couple of days and Voila! No more ants.

Keep House Cool Without AC

I have central air conditioning ($!), but I try not to use it except in extreme conditions, like very high humidity or rain on a hot day. To keep cool, I make sure I pull the blinds on any east-facing windows before I go to bed, which keeps the baking hot sun from starting the day off too hot. I also open all windows at bedtime, to let the cooler air collect in the house.

In the morning, I close all of them and just use a small tabletop or floor fan to keep the naturally cooled air moving. You'd be surprised by what a difference it makes to have air moving instead of using the AC. I "chase the sun" during the day, pulling down blinds to avoid the sun as the day progresses.

Keep in mind, too, that televisions, computers, etc, all put out significant heat, so keep that to a minimum or just BBQ as much as possible and use a small or Energy Star TV. An hour before bedtime, I may check the temperature in the house and, if it's too high (above 76F), then I turn on the AC for about an hour.

After that, open the windows to let the cool night air back in. Using the ventilator fan in the bathroom also helps suck the hot air out, and window fans are great for pumping the cool air in during the night. My electric bill drops significantly during the summer, because I'm not using the HVAC system to heat or cool the house.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A country woman passed out and her husband, Bubba, called 911. The operator said they would send someone out right away and asked, "Where do you live?"

Bubba replied, "At the end of Eucalyptus Drive."

The operator asked, "Can you spell that for me?"

There was a long pause and finally, Bubba said, "How about I drag her over to Oak Street and you can meet us there?"

Problems with USPS Mail Delivery

Where can I call and/or write about my mail not being delivered as it is addressed? Even though my street address is the " address on the envelope"? The mail lady still insists on putting all my mail in my P.O. box.

I don't want to put in a "cover-all" change of address to the Post Office because of just this problem. I changed my address at one place that I get mail from at least twice a week. The only address on the envelope is my street address, the P.O. box address is not on the envelope at all. But since she knows who I am she sticks it in the P.O. box anyway.

I have called the regional office and complained to no avail. If someone can tell me who I can call about this problem I'd appreciate it. I don't want to put a cover all change of address in that will affect my important things (bills, taxes, pay statements, etc) until I can get this straightened out.

This is because we have had many problems with mail delivery here over the last 12 years and I don't want to possibly lose my tax info like we did when we first opened the P.O. box because, of them not delivering it as it was addressed. Isn't it a federal law that mail must be delivered "as addressed"?

Selling a Home to a Family Member

Could anyone give me their opinion please. My mother is selling her house to my brother. When the sale is completed she is giving us an equal cash amount. So far so good. However she is dropping the price of the property by 20,000 pounds to help him get on to the property ladder.

Now I am more than happy for him to have every assistance, but am I wrong in thinking that he has been handed a 20,000 pound lump sum when the property is eventually sold. Does anyone see it the same way? Or am I being harsh?

Kitten Has Stopped Using Litter Box

I just got a kitten a week ago. Her box was in the living room and she was using it great. Three days ago we put it in the kitchen. She goes in it, but two days ago she peed on the floor.

Then she didn't, and she was fine, going in the litter. Then today she peed on the rug again in a different spot. Why is she doing this and how can I prevent it from happening again? My husband wants to get rid of her. Please help.

Homemade Hair Conditioner

I'm looking for something that is natural and contains no harmful ingredients, even if the finished product is not "thrifty". Mayonnaise isn't working very well for me and I've already tried olive and coconut oil. Any help would be appreciated.
