Volume Five, Number 42, March 2, 2006
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

We added new options to the poll about going out to the movies. The options we provided weren't very meaningful since most people don't go to the movies more than once a month. Thank you to readers for pointing that out. The new poll can be found here:

Post your answer:

I would also like to request Easter tips and craft ideas. If you have any to share, please submit them on the photo or tip contest forms.

We have 20 new requests today, please look them over.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Gizmo (Moggy/Ragdoll)

Gizmo (Moggy/Ragdoll)

Gizmo is about 8 Months and is a Moggy/ragdoll. He is a kitten from my gorgeous Tortishells litter, along with another entry of mine, Milesy. He likes to sneak into the pantry.

Gizmo is a gorgeous cat, I love him although he can be a bit spoiled at times. He is a handsome kitty and is very affectionate. He is a great addition to my family.

Fruit Printing
By Stella Rivet

This article shows you how to make Fruit Printed Tea Towels but there are a lot of different crafts you make using this printing method. This is a simple craft and has such beautiful and elegant results. I was able to finish it within an hour. Most of that time was spent sewing. To cut down on time you could buy cheap tea towels and print on them.

Here is a Picture Pillow I made of my grandaughter, Dani. It was my first try at printing pictures to cloth using my printer. I must say, I'm quite proud of it.

Heaven Joke

A woman approached the Pearly Gates and was greeted by St. Peter who said, "Before you enter, you must spell a word." "Oh," she said. "What word?" "Any word you like," he told her. She said, "I'll spell Love - L-O-V-E." St. Peter told her she could go in, but asked if she would mind staying there a moment while he went to get something. "What do I do if someone comes?" she asked. "Just tell them to spell a word," St. Peter answered, and left. She stood there only a moment when her husband came into view. She said, "What are you doing here?" and he told her, "I was so distraught at your funeral that when I was driving home, I got into an accident and here I am!" and she said, "Well, you have to spell a word before you can come in." He said, "What word?" and she answered, "Czechoslovakia."

The Value of Clear Glass Cannisters

I have heavy square glass canisters with tight-fitting lids that I store dried ingredients (elbow macaroni, rice, beans, etc.) in on the countertop. The glass lets me see the level of these products so I know when to add that item to the grocery list.

When I refill these containers, I always cut the cooking directions off the package and place under the lid so that I have them handy. Although I rarely glance at the directions any more, it is really handy when someone else has to be in the kitchen preparing food.

I do have another set of canisters for other items that are stored in cupboards. I store the more traditional canisters items such as coffee, tea, flour and sugar in respective containers, but have found it very handy to keep the tea and coffee canisters in the beverage cupboard and the flour and sugar canisters in the baking cupboard.

It felt a bit unusual at first to break up the set that way, but it sure saves time and is a real convenience when someone else is in the kitchen needing these items.

Getting Sticky Dresser Drawers to Run Smoothly

Use Johnson wax to wax the runners on sticky dresser drawers. Makes the drawers slide smoothly. Can make sticky secondhand furniture drawers slide smoothly. Can work wonders even on cheap runners.

Fixing Boys Clothes to Work for Girls

In having to help raise my grandchildren - 2 boys and a girl. I have taken to cutting a few corners to make ends meet. The boys being the oldest, hand me downs went ok. But I did not want to put boy clothes on a little girl. So I sewed cute little designer buttons or appliques on the pockets to give them a little feminine touch. No one knew that they weren't bought that way unless I chose to tell them. I did the same with some of the solid color shirts -- a bow at the neck line made it look like it belonged to her.

Keep Pen Ink From Leaking in Your Purse

One easy way to prevent pen ink from leaking in your purse or briefcase is to store your pens in plastic travel toothbrush holder. Even pens with caps can sometimes break and leak.

Sanding Wood

When sanding a piece of wood you can use an old nylon to check the smoothness of the wood. Slip the nylon over you hand and slide your hand over the piece of wood. Anywhere that the nylon snags needs more sanding.

Do you have any tips for sanding wood?

Saving by Using Smaller Post-a-Notes

I use a lot of post-a-notes for various reminders, but found I was rarely using the entire space the larger post-a-notes provided. I have now switched to the smallest size I can find. I also buy the packs of post-a-notes that come in various colors. I reserve one color just for items needing immediate action (paying a bill in person before the due date, report cards or permission slips that must be signed and returned, etc.). I know when I see it that my time to move towards completion of whatever the action needed is close at hand. Also, most post-a-notes can be used multiple times.

Removing Burnt Grease from Copper Bottom Pans

I am new at this and I have a question for the members. How do you remove burned on grease and crud from copper bottom cookware? It's burned on over a period of time and short of using a Dremel on it I have no clue how to clean. I have used everything from Oven Cleaner to just plain old elbow grease, which us old folks don't have much of most of the time.

Would appreciate any help with this problem you guys can shove my way.

My church is having a rainbow tea party, to be held in a few weeks. This is my first time, and I have been chosen as one of the leaders. I have a team of women chosen to work with me. My color is blue. Not my favorite color, but I must work with it.

Job Ideas for an Outgoing Person

My son is working in heating and air, and is not really happy with that choice of occupations. He is a very outgoing type of person, and anytime he has ever taken an aptitude test, it always suggests sales. The trouble with that is he doesn't want to sell anything.

He has been told he would make a great nurse, but he cannot say that he has a burning desire to be a nurse. He managed a hotel at one time, and was good at it, but he would like something that he can make a better living at.

Does anyone have suggestions for him as to what he can do with that kind of personality and people skills? Any brainstorm ideas would help and be of interest.

Thanking you in advance,
