FreshVac Review

I mentioned purchasing the food storage containers called "Freshvac" (purchased at Target) and said I'd report back after using.

They kept asparagus and cut up watermelon fresh. I got about 5 days out of the asparagus (had to cut off the woody end part a little bit to make it fit and did not pre-rinse). The watermelon was eaten up in 3 days, but it seemed fresher than usual (in the tub with the plastic grid on the bottom).

Cherries and blueberries were pretty much the same whether in a Tupperware with a paper towel on top changed when too moist or a Freshvac.

My chief complaint with Freshvac is that my favorite size rectangle (the middle one with the grid) is only available as part of a set of 3 and not available separately at a lower price.

Am planning on going to Whole Foods Market shortly and buying paper towels that are not bleached so that nothing leaches into the food that they rest on.

I recently purchased 1 square container with the intention of using it to marinade Chicken or Meats, or Fish and I found it works very well for that purpose. You have to keep pressing down on the lid until it no longer expresses any more air. You could use the hand pump that comes with the New Ziplock Vacuum Freezer Bags, which are cheap to buy (about $2-$3 and also works exceptionally well. (I use them for my silver cutlery to prevent tarnish)
Back to the Freshvac, I would not purchase any more.

Tip** for storing "soft" fruits such as strawberries, etc, Use any kind of plastic airtight container, Line the bottom with 2 layers of paper towels, add the UNWASHED fruit one layer thick and again add another layer of paper towel on top, finishing off with the top having paper towel on it. Close the lid and store in the fridge, If the fruit was fresh when you bought it, It will stay absolutely perfect for about 10 days. I live in California and the strawberries here are plentiful, this tip came from a grower, and it works wonderfully. Good Luck.
