Baxter The Cat

Baxter is 4 years old and he is just the average cat. I got him through a rescue center here called "Alley Cat Rescue". They were having an adoption-a-thon at the pet store. I knew he was the one for me when he was sitting there all alone. He was a Valentines Day present to myself.

For fun, Baxter likes to sleep and stare at lizards through the window.

Recycled Rubberband Keeper

Use a mini hanger for socks as a rubberband keeper. The rubber bands will all be kept on the area where the socks hung. Take a rubber band, slip knot around the end that kept the socks from sliding off (this will be the hinge area) and then hook the other end on the end that hung on the display (this end you remove to get to rubber bands). It also works with hair bands. Just toss in the drawer or hang. Recycling and organizing in one!

Packing Baked Goods for a Bake Sale

When our church has a bake sale, I take several of the cardboard box bottoms (that cases of canned soda pop comes in from the store). If a bake sale customer buys quite a few plates of baked goodies, all can be placed in the cardboard box bottoms, in a single layer without being stacked on top of each other and flattened, like if they'd been placed in a plastic grocery bag, to carry home. This is crucial in case they're buying the baked items for someone else or to use as a gift.

Look For Free Calendars Before The New Year

Now is the time of year to be looking for the free calendars for the upcoming new year. My husband has come home in the past few weeks with free calendars from one of our local repair shops, some from our insurance man (one being in magnet form and one to hang on the wall. He came home last night with a calendar that his boss man gave him that he got for free from a flower shop. They're all just beautiful. The magnet calendar has an old timey scene on it. The calendar from the repair shop had the old timey pictures on it. The insurance company calendar has some of the most beautiful photos of American landmarks. Local drugstores usually issue calendars with manufacturer's or store brand coupons. Be on the lookout, as calendars are so expensive, otherwise.

Use Washclothes Instead Of Sponges

Instead of buying sponges or "made for cleaning" clothes, I purchase an inexpensive package of white wash clothes from a discount department store. They are good for washing dishes and cleaning the surfaces in the kitchen and bathrooms. The best part is the when they are dirty, I can throw them in the laundry, bleach them and when they are dry, the are ready to use again. No need to keep purchasing sponges over and over again.

Freeze Whole Tomatoes

If you have too many tomatoes from your garden, put them in a brown paper bag and put them in your freezer. When you are ready for your favorite tomato recipe, just take them out and run them under cold water. The skins will peel right off. Then just thaw them out and cook.

Make Sure You Know New CPR Techniques

Please, please, please take a CPR course if it's available in your community. I took one last night and found out that the CPR technique has been improved recently. If you took the course a couple of years ago, you'll want to take a new one.

The new technique uses 5 cycles of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths. Then, if available, an AED (automatic electronic defibrillator) is used. These small packs are often found in public buildings, and are very easy to use. But in an emergency, every second counts, and if you have the latest information and training, the victim has a better chance for survival.

If you have small children, be sure you also get CPR training for infants and children. It's a little different than for adults. Our course also covered seizures and the Heimlich maneuver.

A 2-evening course at the Red Cross costs $65, and covers CPR and first aid. Your local fire dept. may offer a 4-hour CPR only course for $20 per person. Take it if you can. You could save a life.

Garbage Disposal Can Cause Odors

I have lived in an apartment for 3 years. In that time, I could never get rid of a smell coming from the sink. I tried bleach, soda and vinegar, and bought disposal cleaner. Nothing worked. Three times I had them come to repair a leak, the fourth time, it was decided to replace the garbage disposal. Well, low and behold, no more smell!

So all the smell was from the disposal. I am a happy camper again. Hope this helps someone who "just" can't trace that smell.

Add Food Coloring When Spraying For Weeds

A helpful tip for when spraying large areas - put a drop of food colouring in the spray pump and you always know where you have been!! Saves time and money as you are not wasting the product or going over an area twice.

Hanging Gourds Outside To Dry

We happen to have an old swing set in the backyard. So this year, I took the gourds off the vine, and took a hammer and long nail and punched 4 holes in the bottom of the gourds. Took twine and attached it to the stems and hung the gourds on the swing set and let the sun dry them. They are drying just fine. Last year I put them in my basement and had a mess on the floor as they dripped from the holes in the bottom, and lost quite of few from rot.

Durable Hardwood Flooring

I need your expertise here on hardwood flooring. We are going to be building a new home and I need to know which is the best color and most durable hardwood floor we can get. I want a color that doesn't show every foot print, every speck of dirt and dust shortly after it's cleaned. We built the house we are currently living in and we made a big mistake by putting in cherry hardwood flooring in 1800 square feet of this home. It is a nightmare. I no sooner wash it and there is foot prints and dust visible 5 minutes later. I have given up. Not only that it isn't very durable at all if you have children. Please advise me on what floor to get in our next home as I don't want to live this nightmare again. Thanks in advance.

Lavender Oil in Laundry

I started making homemade fabric softener (baking soda, vinegar). It works really well in making clothes soft! I also add lavender essential oil, as described in the recipe. It stated 5-8 drops. Well, it smells wonderful until I use it in the rinse cycle. The finished laundry has no smell at all of the lavender! I then used 1/2 bottle, still no smell on the clothes. Am I buying the wrong oil? I bought the kind you can use in making soaps, etc., at a craft store. Does anyone have any ideas why my clothes don't have the wonderful lavender smell? Thanking you in advance.

Crafts using Tin Cans

I'm looking for patterns and instructions for tin can crafts. My mother use to make mini furniture out of tin cans, also people (like robots) and all sorts of things. Of course, as a kid, I didn't pay any attention on how she did it. I do know that she would cut the cans in strips and then curled them. They looked like wrought iron furniture. Please help. Thanks in advance.
