Recycled Baby Stocking

Someone gave me a floor mat for my baby to play on that was missing some toys that dangle. Instead of throwing it away when I got a better one, I decided to cut it up and make a stocking! I made a pattern out of a large piece of drawing paper that I drew a freehand stocking on. I cut it so the right sides faced each other, pinned, and sewed. I trimmed off the felt material they used on the sides and sewed it across the top of the stocking for an accent and as the stocking hanger.

Frugal Christmas Crafts

Cute, quick and frugal gifts or decorations!

The magnets are used canning jar lids and smaller ones are from frozen OJ concentrate can ends. Base coat white or brown and paint faces. I used blush for the cheeks and had some wood plugs I used for the noses. For the gingers, I used fabric yoyos or strips of fabric tied into bows, hot glued onto the heads. The snow men I used pipe cleaners and little pom poms for ear muffs and a sock cut into 2 inch sections, sewn across one end, to make little hats and hot glued on.

The ginger and snow balls are from old softballs, base coated and glued onto canning jar rings. The snowball hats are from socks, cut into about 4 inch pieces, sewn across the end. I then took white "scribble" dimensional paint and did the "frosting" lines on the ginger and snowflakes on the snowballs hats. Had everything on hand!

I've sold a bunch of the ginger and snow balls for $7.50 each and the magnets for $2.50. I've "gifted" many of them already this season! I get the softballs from my son and DIL, who play on a softball team :0) Sometimes I find them at thrift stores for about $.50 each. Have fun!!

Francis (Beagle)

Francis is a 3 year old male Beagle. We adopted Francis from a family through our local Freecycle in September.

Francis loves to play tug of war with his blankets! Although new to the family, he fit in right away. Mild mannered and quite the snuggler - he makes a big lap dog and enjoys all of the love and attention that we give him!

Craft: Doily Fan Ornaments

You'll want to make several of these beautiful Victorian fans for your tree. Doilies come in a variety of colors, so choose one that works with the color and theme of your tree. The metallic silver and gold ones reflect the lights and are very pretty.

Craft: Sweet Gum Mini-Wreath

This wreath is made from the seed pods from the Sweet Gum tree. This is a pattern for all you Southern folks that have these seed pods to clean up every fall from your yard. They may be available in craft shops in the North, or perhaps you can find a place to buy them on line. Here in Arkansas, they are easily gathered.

Craft: Dried Flower Note Cards
By Debra Frick

These are very simple to make with flowers that you have collected and dried. Pansy and spring flowers are the best to use as they dry very flat, But I have even dried sunflowers in my flower press. Directions for a simple flower press can be found on ThriftyFun so if you missed the directions, you can find them there. With a little time and effort, you can make these beautiful note cards for yourself. These make a wonderful gift for Christmas or a Bridal or Baby shower.

Craft: Foam Plate Snowman

Take 3 foam 6 inch plates, punch hole in first at one side and opposite side, do the same for second plate. For the third plate, just punch a hole on one side. Take plate and thread ribbon through that hole and hole of next plate. Tie in back and cut off extra ribbon. Now take the two connected plates and thread ribbon through open hole and attach to last plate. You now have the snowman body.

Keeping a Cutting Board from Slipping

I knead my bread on a wooden cutting board, but the board was always slipping. I happened on the solution one day by chance. I had washed the counter, and it was still damp when I needed to make bread, so I put a dishtowel underneath my board. To my delight, it didn't slip when I was kneading!

Helping 95 Year Old Mother with Christmas Gifts

My 95 year old Mother found buying and wrapping gifts for her 50 descendants was too big a chore. We took a picture of her on her birthday and printed 50 wallet size photos and bought her Christmas cards and postage stamps. Now we will enjoy sitting with her and helping address the cards. She loved the idea.

Give Love Instead of Presents This Year

A tip for avoiding stressing during the holidays from the ghost of Scrooge! Tell every member of your family and all your friends that you are broke and will not be buying any gifts this season, and possibly many seasons in the future; but you love them all very much and you wish them all a Happy Holidays. Also, they are all invited to drop by for Coffee and Cookies and great conversation with dancing and music.

I also want every member of Thriftyfun.com to send: Susan, Lewis, Fletcher, Jess and staff a Happy Holiday Wish Box just like this one and thank them for their open hearted giving during the whole year through! Signed: Scrooge!

And one more thought! Happy New Year to Every Body!

Plastic Bottle Caps as Cat Toys

My four cats were constantly losing their store bought toys under the appliances and furniture, and down the basement stairs. One day I realized they got the exact same amount of joy chasing a plastic bottle cap around. Milk cap, soda cap, water cap, it doesn't matter. They don't cost me anything that I wouldn't have spent anyway and because I can replace them constantly, they always have a fresh scent. Cats tend to get bored with something that smells familiar. Once a week, I scoop all of them up that I find and start all over again.

Tips For Mailing Goodies

Divide layers of holiday cookies/cakes/candies etc with coffee filters that you plan to ship by mail in a large coffee can. If your foodies need cushioning, use marshmallows and add a small pack of homemade hot cocoa mix and a stir spoon tied with ribbon or even dunked in chocolate and covered with cellophane!

Make the can into another gift by itself by covering the can with a nice wallpaper border of houses in a row or a downtown row of shops. I have mailed cans wrapped like this and I am told that the mailman loves them and expressed awe of them!

'Fix A Chip' to Repair Chipped Counter Top

My son dropped a hammer on our counter in the bathroom (new home). It chipped the counter top. Most places I called (home repair, hardware stores) said I would have to replace it. It was too much money for a small chip.

I tried a product I found on the internet called Fix A Chip. I worked very well. I have used kitchen cleaner over that spot many times. It still has stayed hard. That was 3 yrs ago. My counter top has a couple of color blends, so it was easy blend the color. Not sure how well it would match on a solid counter top.

Source: Just did a search of the internet, how to repair counter top chip/cracks.

Delegate Christmas Responsibilities

Relieve stress like you would if you were a manager or executive at work, delegate, delegate, delegate. Have others, both family and friends, help decorate, wrap and contribute to Christmas dinner. Don't sweat the small stuff, everyone will be happy to be together even if you forget to put out the napkins or cranberry sauce!

Organizing Barbie Clothes Patterns

As I create and sew Barbie doll-size fashions, I came up with a way to keep my patterns organized. For each outfit of the pattern set, I use a 6 1/2-in x 3 5/8-in regular envelope. On the outside, I write the Pattern Number, View, Name of outfit, etc.

It is also handy to record any notes, such as "add 1 inch to length", etc. When it's time to choose an outfit to make, I pull my selection out of the original pattern envelope. This saves time going through all those pieces, and prevents loss, too.

Wrap and Stack Children's Gifts Together

Like most grandparents we always go overboard on gifts and want the packages to be spectacular and mainly recognizable.

We use different paper for each child (geared to their age) and then stack them together and bind them with ribbon. Also, it means only one per child to decorate or put a huge bow on. With 7 grandchildren, they know which gifts come from us.

Gift Basket Idea for First Apartment

When my brother graduated from college and got his first apartment, I tried to think of something that he could really use, and wouldn't get for himself. I thought back to when I got my first place, and then I had it! The perfect gift! I bought a large laundry basket for him, and filled it with the things he'd never think of ahead of time; paper towels, Comet, Windex, dish soap, Handi-wipes, sponges ...you get the idea. All the cleaning products you don't know to get in your first place, or have the money for either. I tied a huge red bow on the front of the basket, and gave him the entire thing. He still talks about it all these years later and he has done it for friends of his now too.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

An elderly woman and her little grandson, whose face was sprinkled with bright freckles, spent the day at the zoo. Lots of children were waiting in line to get their cheeks painted by a local artist who was decorating them with tiger paws.

"You've got so many freckles, there's no place to paint!" a girl in the line sneered to the little fella.

Embarrassed, the little boy dropped his head. His grandmother knelt down next to him.

"I love your freckles. When I was a little girl I always wanted freckles," she said, while tracing her finger across the child's cheek. "Freckles are beautiful."

The boy looked up, "Really?"

"Of course," said the grandmother. "Why just name me one thing that's prettier than freckles."

The little boy thought for a moment, peered intensely into his grandma's face, and softly whispered, "Wrinkles."

Leeward's Christmas Stocking Pattern

I am looking for an old Christmas Stocking pattern that I believe was put out by Leewards. My mom made them for us when we were little and has since made some for my husband and kids. Now that I have another baby in the house, she's lost the pattern!

It's double crocheted and the lettering and snowflakes are cross stitched on. She remembers that you could also cross stitch a Christmas tree on the front instead of the snowflake pattern. If anyone knows where I can find this pattern, I'd appreciate it! Thank you!!

Recipes for Breadsticks, Cookie Sticks, Etc

I'm seeking ideas for bread sticks and cookie sticks! I received a lovely lead crystal container as my first Christmas gift of 2007. The interior of the cylindrical container is just over 7" tall and about 5.25" in diameter. Although you could use it for flowers (a lot of them because the mouth is huge), I would like to put food in it, because it would be displayed very well!

I'm thinking about bread sticks, very long cookie sticks, or maybe dipped pretzels - although I'm guessing those long, thick pretzel sticks may not be long enough! I really wouldn't have to put stick shapes in there - maybe it could be something people could get out with long toothpicks or a long spoon. I need your imaginations!

How to Comb Out Dreadlocks To Make Mohawk

Well, I have dreadlocks now and I'm thinking about getting a Mohawk later. I am going to comb out my dreadlocks and I wonder if it's even possible to get a Mohawk after that. My hair was already curly and a bit frizzy before I got Dreadlocks, and after I comb them out my hair will most likely be damaged too.

I do not want a frizzy Mohawk, I want a normal Mohawk. I'm just not sure if it will work. Any ideas?

Keeping Rabbits Out of Engine Compartment

How can you keep rabbit out of your engine compartment? The menace had chewed my car wires first causing major damage with an estimated cost of over $2,000.00. I couldn't figure out how it could have made such big teeth marks. My car is still in the shop awaiting a new wire harness.

Then this week the rabbit got in my husband's car, and cost $252.44 to repair the minor damage. The rabbit traveled 16 miles to our first stop, and 22 miles to the shop. He now has a new place of residence, and I hope it doesn't find it way back to us. We had moth balls in the engine compartment and pepper chaser. I like the steel wool idea. If any of you have it happen to you, call your car insurance to see if you are covered under comprehensive. Our damages are covered 100%. Anyone for rabbit stew?
