Here's today's featured request:

Organizing a Bathroom Countertop

I have a small bathroom with limited space on the countertop. I have a cabinet under the sink but no drawers. Any ideas on how I can organize my things? My counter is cluttered with toothpaste, floss, combs, mouthwash, etc.

Tyler (cat)

Tyler is a 6 year old cat. Who knows what kind he is. I got him from a pet shelter and picked him because when he meows, nothing comes out.

He likes to sleep. Sometimes he sits around with his tongue hanging out. He just started this last summer. He isn't panting, just lazy I think or likes sticking his tongue out at me.

Make Soups With Any Leftovers

Soups are a great way to use up small amounts of meat and left over veggies. Fresh herbs that are starting to wilt can often be salvaged in these dishes. To boost the protein, which helps fill everyone up, without expensive meat, add a can of beans. They provide great fiber, they're lowfat, unlike meat, and they can be found for so little money.

Yarn And Thread Scraps For Birds

To those who put their scraps of yarn and threads in a tissue box to be thrown away, please just set it outside for birds to build their nest with. They will love it. Who knows what kind of a colorful nest they will build.

Office Chair Mats For Car Mats

I don't believe I've written in with this before. My older minivan far back carpet got ragged and tattered. A replacement one would cost over $100, which I may never have to spare, being low income. I finally discovered that those large spikey bottomed office desk mats of flexible vinyl often tossed on the curb are excellent to place down over the old carpet which doesn't even show through, providing an excellent water-resistant flooring cover, for free.

Product Review: Sticky Paws

Here is something that helps keep cats from scratching furniture.

Sticky Paws is a double-sided tape that adheres to your furniture on one side and is sticky on the other. Cats do not like the stickiness on their paws and as a result do not scratch on the surface.

http://www.stickypaws.com/stickypawscom/productsSPOAR.cfm

It does attract hair and other dust particles, so you will need to periodically change the tape.

Reusing Sweeper Bags

Cheapskate here! Since sweeper bags are so expensive, I empty one, roll the top over and staple. I can use it 2-3 more times!

Water Conservation - What You Can Do

24 Great Water Conservation Tips

  1. Use a water timer for all plants, lawns, trees, and shrubs.

  2. Save water by using a drip system. Check your local yellow pages for landscaping or drip system for installations. Most drip systems are inexpensive and easy to install.

Coins Are Money, Too

Remember coins are money, too. I have seen kids run away leaving a shower of pennies behind them, which I picked up! Some people have trouble paying with change, but it's currency, too! I pick up every penny I find and still think it's good luck!

Tips for Organizing Jewelry

Tie Racks and Color Coordination: Finally, my jewelry is organized and easy to see. I purchased 2 tie-matic men's tie holders on ebay to hang my necklaces. I use one for silver and misc., and one for gold. No hassles finding what I want, no untangling, and I wear my old jewelry that I had forgotten. I did the same with earrings in 2 plastic compartment organizers, one for silver and colors, one for gold.

My First Recipe: Coffee Cake

This is the first recipe that I remember making, although, if I was making a cake by myself, I must have cooked with supervision before this. I was a preteen, maybe 11 years old, and I wanted to make a cake for my mother's birthday. She loves coffee to this day and I found a recipe for coffee flavored icing, probably in her trusty "Joy of Cooking" cookbook. I'm sure it was just a packaged mix cake. I remember meticulously following the directions and carefully measuring each ingredient so that the cake would be perfect. When the directions called for 2 tablespoons of coffee, I measured out coffee grounds. It didn't even occur to me that they would mean brewed coffee. The finished icing had a very gritty texture and was practically inedible. Mom was a trooper, she ate a piece and commented on how good it was. Nevertheless, I was mortified when I realized the mistake. Today, in this world of chocolate covered espresso beans and coffee flavored soda, you might see something like this served in a fancy bakery. Or maybe not, it was a little like eating dirt!

Uses For Leftover Baked Chicken

When I bake chicken, whatever chicken is left over I take and pull off the bones and make chicken salad. I can also take the chicken and put barbecue sauce with it and use it for tacos.

Rotting Fish Smell in a Car

We had a cooler with fresh fish and ice in the back of the car. The cooler tipped over and some of the melted ice must have spilled on the carpet. Now the car reeks of rotting fish. Can anyone help me get the odor out of the carpet?

African Violets Damaged By Cold

I finally succeeded in getting one of my 2 African Violet plants to bloom several weeks ago. Before going out of town for several days, I rigged up a thermostatically controlled heater to prevent the sun-room from dropping below 60 deg or so, since I knew these plants are not cold tolerant. My thermostat malfunctioned, and I returned home to 2 pathetic looking African Violets, although the blooms on the one looks good as new. I need to know if I should trim off the cold damaged leaves. It looks like new leaves are coming in at the center of the plants, and after almost 2 weeks after the damage occurred, the blooms on the one still look great! Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Knitted Bag Rug

I have seen patterns for making Rag Rugs out of plastic handles bags. I can't crochet and would love for someone to give me the pattern for knitting such a rug. I am definitely a step by step person.

Removing Dark Hair on My Legs

I have a problem with getting rid of the hair on my legs. I have really fair/transparent skin and thick black hair, and I can never seem to get rid of it. If I shave or use remover cream it seems like I can see the hair follicle through the skin (it looks like black dots all over). If i wax i get red inflamed spots instead. Help

Making Baskets From Recycled Fabric

I'd like to know how to make a cloth basket using old clothes and material scraps. I have everything from basic fabrics to jeans to sweaters to use.

Baskets can be so expensive, so I'd love to make my own. I'm looking especially for rectangular baskets (so I can stack them a bit). Easy/beginner level if at all possible.

Thanks!
