Craft: Soft Sculpture Butterflies
By Debra Frick

Imagine yourself at a yard sale and you just found the most beautiful blouse and they only want a $1.00 for it, but it is dated with those shoulder pads that they seemed to put into all expensive clothing. So you decide "what the heck, I will buy the blouse anyway and get rid of the shoulder pads."

Oscar (Tabby Cat)

Oscar is almost 2 years old. My Grandmother adopted Oscar from the local animal shelter. When she moved into an apartment that does not allow pets, he came to live with my husband and I.

Oscar's favorite thing in the entire world is stealing and playing with hair ties. I have very long hair and more than once I have been woken up by kitty trying to steal the rubber band from the end of my braid! He just goes nuts over them!

Oscar had been a blessing to my husband and I. He came to us shortly after we had lost our very dear kitty, Sinatra, to a better place. I especially, thought we would never find another cat that would be able to fill that void but Oscar had been a best friend. We are so very lucky to have him!

Guard Your PIN From Other Eyes

Safety first! How many times do you go to the grocery store, or ATM, or any other store, pull out your debit card, and openly enter your four digit code. It takes 2 hands, cover your other hand over the hand which is entering your code, thus to avoid people watching for it, from near or far. Go to do at the gas station as well. I heard people can watch you enter it, than do something to the machine you just used, and gain cash.

Safe days to all.

Winterizing Your Steel Doors

It's a little late in the season for this one, but will be good for next winter. If you live in a manufactured home or trailer, most or all of them have steel entry doors. I have found that by using a magnetic curtain rod and hanging an insulated drapery panel on the inside of the door in the winter, cuts down on a lot of cold coming off the door.

My Frugal Life: My ORGANIZED Life

A place for everything and everything in it's place helps my busy life run much smoother and it saves money too!My Frugal Life

Financial information

Organize a binder that contains all your important papers including investment statements, insurance (life, health, homeowners, auto, etc.), credit card, bank accounts, etc. When new statements arive, replace the old and shred. In the event of a fire, natural disaster just pickup the binder and GO! If there is an unexpected death, theft of a wallet, accident or other tragedy you'll have all policy numbers and phone numers at your finger tips. This will hasten the payments due to you in your time of need and give you great piece of mind. Include copies of your prescriptions too!

Bill Paying

  • Pay bills at the same time each month (payday or the 1st and 15th). Getting into this habit will allow you better control of your finances. As bills are received, place them in a large envelope or file folder to avoid losing them. Set any bill up on automatic deduction from your checking account to avoid late fees. (I have my mortgage, car payments, all insurance payments including life and homeowners and newspaper) I am adding my phone and water bill to the list this month. Have your paycheck automatically deposited to your account if available through your employer. This way bills can get paid even if you are on vacation! No more late fees.
  • Stop using credit cards. Save up to pay for what you want to buy. No more interest payments and no more late fees. Cancel your cards in writing.
  • Check your credit report annually using the three FREE credit reporting agencies. Make sure it reflects your cancelled cards. Review carefully for any unusual activity which might indicate your identiy is at risk.

Cooking List

  • I keep a running list of what we've eaten for dinner so I don't duplicate meals too often.
  • I plan my main course for a week or so at a time depending on what is on our calendar for the evening. Eating in is more nutritious and saves money. Planning allows me to purchase the items when I am at the grocery avoiding a run to the store.
  • I plan on having each of my Dear Daughters (age 16 and 10) cook a meal one night a week starting this summer.
  • I keep an accordian file of recipes I'd like to try divided into categories like pasta, poultry, desserts, etc. Occasionally I'll sort them out, throwing those away I know I'll never try and selecting a few to cook over the next month.
  • Use what is in your pantry.
  • Don't forget that grocery list: Train your family members to record an item (I have a wipe off board on my refrigerator). If it NOT on the list it doesn't get purchased.

Make Lists

  • Grocery: Keep a running grocery list in your phone or daytimer so it's handy when you shop
  • Task List: Make a list of tasks or cleaning projects to be completed each day, week, year. I feel a great sense of satisfaction when I mark one off as done and it keeps me on my toes as to what chores need to be completed in what order. My list includes items like cleanig the blinds and windows, cleaning the silver, cleaning closets, ordering mulch, planting bulbs, etc.
  • Clothing or Shopping Needs: I do most of my clothes shopping at outlet malls. I keep a running list of items we each need to be as efficient as possible. These twice yearly shopping trips act as a mini-vacation and actually save me money because I am not at the malls on a regular basis. I save up to $50 each pay period for these trips. My girls do all their summer shopping in April and their back to school shopping in August. I do Christmas shopping in November. I also stock up on seasonal gifts for my secret pal, sunday school teachers, accountability ladies, etc onthese trips.
  • Christmas (or Birthday) List: I purchase Christmas gifts all year long. I LOG these in a spread sheet which also tracks the cost of the item. These items are stored in a plastic storage bin under my bed so they don't get lost.
  • Reading List: I keep a list of books (reviews cut from magazines or the newpaper too!) so I can always check out something interesting from the Library.
  • Movie List: I have a list on my computer of all the VHS and DVDs we won (CDs being added soon!) This way if I need to suggest a movie title for a gift, I'll know what we have. Print the list and store in your important papoers binder in the event of a fire ot tornado. It will make it easier to claim on your insurance!
And the most important . . .
  • Wish List: I keep a running list of the things I'd like to accomplish before I die, places I'd like to visit, etc. I just turned 50 and will be crossing off "Take drum lessons" soon. A goal is just a dream you have written down. If you can dream it you CAN do it!
This may seem a bit compulsive to you but I didn't start all these lists at the same time. Select the ONE that will simplify your life and give it a shot! You'll be glad you did

Sometimes It Pays To Stay In One Place

It pays to keep aware of local happenings. I have somehow stayed at my apartment all these years at the neighborhood got better, always planning to move but didn't. Now the neighborhood is gentrifying and I am looking for signs of the building going condo or being torn down but I don't think that trend will get us for some years. I still keep my ear to the ground, though. And in the meantime the rent is very low.

Use Your Cellphone as an Alarm Clock

After having a few clocks that we've been known to sleep through the alarms going off and being late for appointments, work, etc., I now use my cell phone's "alarm clock" option. It's loud and there is no way I'm unable to hear it with it being on my side of the bed. I keep it in the nightstand drawer, partially open.

Show Up At Government Offices Toward End Of Day

Don't spend the day at any Government Department, telephone and ask what time is their closing time. Arrive 1 hour before closing and I ASSURE you, you'll not spend more than 1 hour waiting; no matter how many people are waiting or the time of year :)

Low Cost Recessed Stepping Stones

Seattle is known for it's rain. And with that rain comes muddy yards, so I needed stepping stones. But I didn't want to worry about my lawnmower hitting the stones, so I came up with a plan that worked perfectly! And all you need is cement or concrete, water and a shovel.

First of all, pick a day with no rain that's not very hot and cut your grass as short as you can in the area you want to place your stepping stones. Next (on the freshly cut grass) mark the exact outline of what you want each of your stepping stones to look like. (most people use a marking paint made for marking underground power cables, but I used plain white cooking flour which I sprinkled on with my hand) The design I used was of "amoeba-like" asymmetrical and slightly interlocking "stones". Next, dig down into the ground about 4 - 6 inches (on and inside the line) while following the line you drew with your shovel. Lastly mix your cement with water (I mixed one bag at a time in a 5 gal bucket) then fill each freshly dug hole to the top with the wet cement. (The ground is your "mold")

*Buy about 1 small bag of concrete per hole depending on the size and depth of the hole. You can press several interesting sticks and leaves into the wet cement, these will look like "fossils" in the "stone". You can also stain the cement with a cement colorant so it looks like stone, (many colors are available) but I left mine plain and they turned out wonderful. I chose a wavy path for my stepping stones (as opposed to a straight line) with one zigzag in it. This looks great with the "organic" interlocking shape of the recessed cement "stones" and I put a fountain with plants around it in the center where the path "zigged".

The stepping stones look like slate for a fraction of the price, but my favorite thing about them is that we could mow right over them with no harm to our mower blades! That AND the way my shoes no longer got wet on my way to the car! I was told that without adding re-bar my stepping stones might crack, but they've been there for nearly 20 years now and have held up fine. But, truthfully, if they do crack, it just adds to the slate-like rock look. No big deal!

Recycle Coffee Pods For The Garden

We got a new coffee maker at work-one that uses the individual pods. I put a bucket out and now take them home. I empty the grounds into my compost bin and use the plastic pods as planters for seeds and babies-from spider plants. Planning a yard sale and will sell for 50 cents or so. will also be giving some away as gifts for a couple of housewarming. Not bad for free.

Use Recycled Cans For Garden Edging

I save my vegetable cans, clean them and take the paper off of them and use them for starting new plants and as a border around my gardens. When I put them around garden, I spray paint them in different colors and turn them upside down and use a hammer to bang into ground. By doing this, it saves it from the landfill and i get free garden edging that looks great

Source: TV show originally used them for gardening projects, I chose to use them as borders for garden.

Freeze Butter Wrappers For Greasing Pans

Save the wrappers from your bar butter or margarine after you have used up the bar and store them in a baggie in the freezer. Then, when you're baking just grab a couple of them and use them to grease your baking pan and toss them after. If you use tub butter or margarine, wipe the tub out with a paper towel before discarding and freeze the paper towel to use later. This gets the pan greased exactly where you want it, doesn't cost anything, and saves you the mess to clean up when the spray gets all over the place.

Getting Ducks To Go Away

I moved into a mobile home that had been vacant for a year, and the ducks in the neighborhood loved to stay under the carport undisturbed. They make a mess and then leave, and come back to do it all again after I have cleaned up. The paint on the cement is peeling from the waste they leave. How do I make them know they are not welcome?

Easy Indian Food Recipes

Someone posted that Indian food had become popular in Great Britain because it is inexpensive and tastes good. The poster was surprised it hadn't caught on in the U.S. I have noticed there are more Indian restaurants in our area than five years ago. I love Amy's Indian frozen meals. I'd like to prepare Indian foods, but I haven't any easy recipes. The ones I've found online have too many ingredients to be frugal or practical for us. I did get a packet of seasonings, Chip Shop Curry at Publix. I put it in the Crock pot with chicken pieces and mushrooms. I cooked it for four hours and served it over rice and it was very good.
Does any one have any easy Indian recipes to share?

Solutions for Over Processed Hair

I have Damaged hair to begin with, but recently I went to a hair salon looking for aid and to hide some bad highlights on my auburn hair and the next thing you know is that they have turned my hair BLACK! I was mortified. In addition, I think the hair dresser didn't rinse properly because my scalp was burning the next day and I still had brown on parts of my scalp. Now I have REALLY Over processed hair and no recourse considering I had already been battling the problem of damaged hair. Now my hair is like thin straw. I cried when I got home yesterday because I thought the only way out was chopping it all off when I've been attempting to grow it long! Do I have to start all over?

Clown Pattern From Old Crafts n Things Magazine

I am desperately looking for a clown pattern. It was in an issue of Craft's n Things magazine I purchased when I lived in the states. Sorry but we can't be more exact with the date old age catching up with us. It was a spring/summer issue 1989, 1990 91? I made this for my daughter and would love to make it for my granddaughter.

Yes I been in touch with the magazine, but sadly they say they are unable to find it. I can't tell you how much this means to me, I will pay to have it posted to me. So if there is a Craft's n Things addict like me out there please help. Can't wait to hear from you.

Surprise Birthday Party Ideas

Does anyone have any ideas on food for a 40 year old's surprise birthday party? We have the hall (local VFW hall) and decorations but food seems to be our problem. The birthday boy is the Head Football Coach at our local high school, so there will be a lot of males at this surprise party. We want to feed them but also NOT break the bank. The hall doesn't have a kitchen.

Also, we can not bring in alcohol, the hall will offer a cash bar. Would it be to tacky If we buy one keg then let them buy more if they want? No we are not serving drinks to any players. So. it's the food.
