Reuseable Decorations for Baby Shower

Decorating the 2 chairs for the Mommy and Daddy to be. Unlike most decorations that are crepe paper and bows that get thrown away after a shower, Why not decorate with new and usable Baby items!

I decorated each chair with one, a blue fleece baby blanket, draping it triangular over the chair and tying the top with blue ribbon, and using a blue bib, That says "I Love My Daddy" on it, And the exact same for the Mommy's chair with a pink fleece blanket, pink ribbon and a pink bib saying "I Love My Mommy". It looked beautiful, and each item was reusable for the new baby.

Lacoste The Kitten

This is not my pet but is my friend Silvia's newest addition, a little kitty that she found abandoned and took in. Her name is Lacoste.

As you can see from this photo, she loves to get herself into impossible places! I just love these picture because I think it shows her personality as well as her cuteness.

Tally Your Grocery Bill on Your Cell Phone

To stay on budget at the grocery store, I use my calculator feature on my cell phone. Then I am not surprised at the register.

Wine Glasses as Candleholders

At a craft fair last week-end I saw the cutest thing to do with old wine glasses. Turn them upside down and take trim with beads on it and glue it to the edge of the base. The beads or trim will hang down towards the glass and make a nice border. On what was the bottom of the glass stem is where you set a candle. You could put anything you like inside them to make them even fancier. I think it would be a great way to use old glasses and make a fancy, inexpensive centerpiece.

Mark Bottles For Easier Reading

Do you have those "over 40" eyes that can't seem to make out the small print anymore? I was struggling to read the labels on things like small containers of facial creams, shampoo, conditioner, etc., without my reading glasses on. I solved the problem by using a Sharpie marker to write a large letter on my products - "E" for eye cream, "F" for face cream, "S" for shampoo, "C" for conditioner, "L" on my lip gel, etc. A simple tip, but it sure makes getting ready in the morning a lot easier!

Folding and Storing Sewing Patterns

This is for people who have a problem with keeping sewing patterns neatly stuffed in those too small envelopes.

I hold the pattern where the front picture is facing me. I cut the envelope across the bottom and up the right side making a folder. I then put the pattern pieces and instructions in the folder, then put all of that in a gallon size zipper freezer bag. You can take it with you to the fabric store and read through the bag to get yardages and notions. There is no danger of its being mistaken for a new pattern so there will be no discussion of payment when you get to checkout.

Cut Scrubbing Pads In Half

To save money on Scotch Brite green scrubbing pads, cut them in half and wallah, you have twice as many to use for the price you pay. Buy them in bulk at Costco or Smart and Final, 30 for three dollars and change. Cut in half and there you have 60 of them for almost pennies! For dishwashing, this would be a 2 month supply for me!

Use Yogurt Insted Of Mayo In Potato Salad

If you make potato salad but your "kids" or others don't like mayo try substituting the mayo with vanilla yogurt! My mother used to do this for me when I was in the "weight loss mode"! It was great!

Appreciate The Nurses

I suppose the tip in this is to be very nice to the nurses in your life. In the spring of 2006, my husband was diagnosed with colon cancer. He spent most of the following year in the hospital under the care of the most wonderful group of nurses and assistants I have ever met. They were so kind to us and watched over him and me like we were their very own grandparents. We were there so many times that the surgery floor nurses were calling us Mr. Joe and Mrs. Margaret.

After he had his colon rejoined, we felt that might be our last trip but he tried to do too much and had to go back for hernia surgery. I met one of our buddies on the elevator and her face fell. She said to me "Mrs Margaret, Is Mr Joe back in the hospital?". This is not a small hospital. It is one of the largest in Houston but you get family type care there.

I have 2 doctors and several nurses in my family. While I am proud of the doctors, I have come to really appreciate the nurses because of what they do every day after the doctor leaves. If you are fortunate enough to know a nurse or to have one in your family, please give him or her a big hug for me!

Recycle Crib Sheets for a Playhouse

When my toddler graduated from a crib to a twin mattress, I gave my older two children the worn out crib sheets. Earlier I'd brought home big boxes for them which they used to create a home, cutting out windows and entries. Then they used duct tape to secure the sheets for curtains and doors. It was a blast; they loved it! A person could also help them paint the boxes outside.

Save Fast Food Plastic Cutlery

My family doesn't eat out very often, but when we do, I always save the napkins, plastic cutlery, and other condiments from our meals. My daughter packs her lunch for school most days, so I just drop whatever she will need into her lunch box.

Roses in Vase Growing New Leaves

September 19th was my birthday, and my daughter graced me with six beautiful long stem roses. The roses came together with some plant food. I carefully placed my beautiful roses in a vase with water and added some of the plant food. I replaced the water with more of the plant food after 4 days and today (Sept. 30) as I saw that the roses were dry i decided to store them in a secure place. As i emptied the vase, I was carefully drying the stems when i noticed that the stems were growing new leaves! I had never seen this happen before so I quickly placed new water in the vase with the remaining plant food. How soon should I plant the rose stems in pots? Thank you so much for all your assistance.

Sincerely,
Grace

Voles Eating Hostas

I have voles eating my hostas. They use old mole tunnels to get to the roots from underneath. I have tried numerous repellents and even small gravel mixed in with the planting (a Southern Living suggestion) but they just keep coming back!

Removing Cat Hair From Embedded in Couch

How do I remove cat hair that is deeply embedded throughout a couch, in the seams & everywhere. The couch is high grade aniline Leather. I bought the set at a garage sale. It had been stored/uncovered in a barn for a year. It looks great, but there is cat hair everywhere and my vacuum isn't getting it all. It's really sticking to the cloth sections that connect the seat and back cushions together (cushions are NOT removable). Help! I can't bear to bring it into the house unless it's hairless & odorless too!
