Today's Tips

Measure Twice, Cut Once

The saying, "measure twice, cut once", is as old as the hills. It's generally used in carpentry to help prevent the wasting of materials but it's really a good tip for all crafts. It's a good rule when working with fabric, leather or any material that needs to be cut to fit a particular purpose. Measure twice, cut once and waste less.

Let Older Children Handle Their Clothing Budget

Give older children and teenagers their own reasonable clothing budget. They quickly learn that the money only goes so far. If they want designer jeans, fine, but they'll have to cut back somewhere else or earn the extra money themselves. By Lisa Trudeau

A Cure for Hiccups?

Well, I don't have the hiccups at the moment, so I can't say if this will work or not. If anyone else has some cures, feel free to post them. This is pretty simple and safe so it's worth a try the next time you get the hiccups. - 1 teaspoon vinegar - 1 cup warm water Mix together and drink. Sure beats having someone try to scare them out of you, if it works. :-)

Salvaging Paint Brushes

It's always good to clean your paint brushes after each use but if you forget and the paint dries on the brush you still may be able to salvage the brush. Just soak the brush over night in cleaning solvent for the type of paint you used. If you used water soluble paint, soak the brush in water. If you used oil paint, soak the brush in turpentine. The paint can should tell you what solvent should be used.

Keeping Drapes Clean while Cleaning

A simple coat hanger will help protect drapes from damage while you're cleaning your carpets or floors. Fold the drapes in half like pants or slacks over the hanger and place the hanger on the curtain rod! L. - Poulsbo, WA

Teach Your Kids How to Budget by Example

The example we set for our children in budgeting is very important. If they see you short of money all the time and you are not poor, then there is no one who will teach them to save and budget at home. If you realize how important this is for them, then you will budget well for their sakes. You will come out ahead too. By Bev Sobkowich

Duplicating a Pattern without Tracing Paper

If you would like to trace off a craft pattern and don't have any tracing paper, just take a pencil and shade the back side of the paper with the pattern below it, and then trace around the pattern. The pattern will be duplicated. This may not work on everything, but you can trace onto another paper or a piece of wood with this method. By Harlean

Preparing a Salad Ahead of Time

Every day my husband and I have a homemade vegetable salad. Most of the time I serve it for dinner but once in a while, depending on what's going on we have it for lunch. To save time I have most of it prepared, here is what I do. After tidying up the kitchen after breakfast I take all of my greens, romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, spinach, shredded cabbage, etc. and break it into pieces and place it in my salad spinner. After washing it well I spin it until it is dry. I then refrigerate it in a large bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Then when it is time to serve it all I have to do is add tomatoes, cukes, olives, etc. and of course, homemade salad dressing. If I didn't do this in the morning I may not have time to do it later. Happy salad eating. By joesgirl

Saving Energy When Cooking

To save energy while cooking, try to cook more than one thing at once in the oven. For example, when I'm cooking a casserole at 400F, I also put in the oven a batch of muffins. The muffins just come out of the oven earlier. I also will put the lid on a pot once it boils to retain the heat. When cooking pasta, I just put the pasta in the boiling water, put on the lid, then turn the burner off. The retained heat will cook it. It just takes about 3-4 minutes longer. You can also add frozen veggies to your boiling pasta water to cook 2 things at once! Happy cooking =) Cindy B. in PSL FL

Feedback: Roach Control Ideas

I know you said Boric Acid didn't work but have you tried this... mix the boric acid with an equal amount of sugar or flour. Place this in a plastic where they frequent. The flour or sugar will attract them to the boric acid and the boric acid should kill them.

Feedback: Frugal Deli Fried Chicken

At my local market, they discount the left-over deli rotisserie chickens the next morning. I can pick up a chicken for 1/2 price. I make chicken salad, chicken & yellow rice, add to canned broth and noodles for soup or just cold chicken with this. Great price, lots of ways to reuse.

Feedback: Thrifty Uses for Salt

It kills fleas in the carpet too. I was using the boric products til my dear Daisy dog ate some & vomited.

Then I read here that salt worked too. It does & it's sure a LOT CHEAPER. Just sprinkle it on there and leave it alone until whenever you feel like vacuuming.

Much less fleas, everybody is happier without going into debt.

Feedback: Preventing and Cleaning Toilet Rings

Pour plain old vinegar into the toilet bowl and let it sit over night. In the morning scrub it with a bowl brush. Repeat several nights in a row until it is clean. This is how I clean my bowls.

Feedback: Saving Money on Paper Towels

Save a empty cube tissue box, carefully open one side without making any tears. Pull out the center cardboard tube in a one-ply roll of toilet paper. This is done by just firmly pressing one end of the cardboard and pull the paper away from the tube. Repeat this on the other end. Now carefully pull out the cardboard tube. Insert the toilet paper in the tissue box. Either tape up or glue the side of the tissue box to contain the toilet paper. You can also make a slit on one side of the flap and insert the other flap, like a sealable cereal box. When you do this, the same box can be reused without having to retape and reglue each time. Pull the toilet paper from the center of the roll. It is very easy to do. This is good for those small spills or to wipe foods from plates before putting in the dishwasher.

Today's Recipe: Prune Puree for Low Fat Baking - Carrot-Raisin Bars

I found some information at an extension site about using prune puree in place of butter in baking. You use it along with margarine to replace butter in some baked goods.

Here's how you make the puree: Combine 1 1/3 cups (8 ounces) pitted prunes and 6 tablespoons water in container of food processor. Pulse on and off until prunes are finely chopped. Makes 1 cup. Another option is to make prune butter by blending 1 pound of prunes with 1 cup of hot water.

Here's how you use the puree:

Use prune puree in baked products to replace up to 1/2 the fat without flavor or texture being compromised according to researchers at Pennsylvania State University. Other fat substitutes that you may want to try are apple butter, applesauce, bananas and yogurt.

Carrot-Raisin Bars

  • 1/3 cup Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Margarine, softened
  • 2 tablespoons Prune puree
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 3/4 cup Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup Raisins, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Carrot, shredded

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Spray an 8-inch by 8-inch pan with cooking spray.
3. Beat sugar, margarine and prune puree with an electric mixer at medium speed until well blended, about 2 minutes. Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. Mix in water.
4. Mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Add to egg mixture. Mix until blended.
5. Mix in oats, raisins and carrot.
6. Spread dough in pan.
7. Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 25 minutes.

Dollhouse Furniture and Decoration

Can anyone give me any creative, frugal tips for making my own doll furniture, etc.? I am decorating a miniature house and also a Barbie sized house for my daughter. I was hoping to make durable furnishings for the Barbie house for her to play with while she is little and can make the more fragile items for the miniature house to keep for when she is older. The websites I have found cater to serious collectors or they are selling kits. I am not a wood worker, but would welcome any simple hints people may have. Thanks for such a great website, I visit daily! God Bless! Lee-Ann from Canada

Mysterious Grease Stains on Clothing and Stinky Towels

At first I thought that it was our washing machine that caused the little "grease" spots on my shirts. We got a new washer and the problems seemed to go away for maybe a month and then were back. ALSO, our bath towels, first time you use them after they are washed, they stink like old stinky towels. IMMEDIATELY, as soon as you get them wet, you can smell the "yucky towel" smell. What can I do to solve these two laundry problems? Ann Washburn

Cleaning the Ceiling without Ruining the Texture

I have dirt streaks on my ceilings near each a/c vent. Is there a way to clean the dirt off without disturbing the ceiling texture? It is the "blown texture" type and actually touching it is not an option because it destroys the texture. Thanks.

Converting Recipes to Lowfat
By Rachel Paxton

The fat content in recipes can be reduced in a variety of ways: When buying hamburger, look for extra lean hamburger. This type has much less fat than regular hamburger. You can also substitute ground turkey for hamburger. Turkey has a slightly different taste, but it is good and generally costs less than hamburger. Ground turkey is generally very low in fat.
