Daily Thrifty Tips - February 4, 2009

Vol. 8, Num. 24, February 4, 2009 (Read It Online)

A quick update on the peanut recall. More recalled products were announced today. You can find a list here:

http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html#recalls

There is one in particular we wanted to call your attention to:

Safeway Recalls Selected Peanut Products Sold at 66 Stores with Nut Kiosks
http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/safeway02_09.html

The disturbing aspect of this recall is that it's whole peanuts, rather than just products containing peanut butter or commercial peanut paste.

Garden: Gazing Ball Found New Life

Here is DH idea for a recycled garden light. He took an old gazing ball and used it to cover an old Malibu light. It has a soft glow at night. Makes me smile to know it is recycled.

Teddy Bear Picnic

Teddy Bear Picnic is a beary cute party. We made Teddy bear sugar cookies. Just add Teddy Grahams before you bake them. We made a CD with all Teddy bear tunes for our guests and gave them each a silicone Teddy bear cupcake mold as a favor. I also printed out a paper with the history of the teddy bear and a coloring page. Of course, we played Teddy Teddy Bear instead of Duck Duck Goose and Musical Bear instead of Musical Chair!

Craft Project: Suet Birdseed Wreath

A welcome treat for winged winter visitors, this suet/birdseed wreath is a fun and easy project to do with kids.

Approximate Time: 1 hour active time (doesn't include cooling down)

Supplies:

  • approx. 5 lbs. beef suet
  • cranberries, kumquats
  • bundt pan
  • mixed birdseed, about 2 lbs.
  • roasting pan
  • raffia, ribbon and/or other decorations

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Chop suet into large chunks. Place suet in roasting pan and bake until fat has rendered.

While suet bakes, place cranberries and kumquats in channels of Bundt pan.

When suet has melted, mix with birdseed. Ladle a few spoonfuls over the fruit, being careful not to dislodge, then pour remaining mixture over fruit. Place in a cold place until hardened and solid.

Unmold (place Bundt pan in sink with a few inches of hot water to make this easier). Decorate with ribbons, berry sprays, pods or dried leaves.

Hang in a cold place that doesn't get a lot of sun. Suet WILL melt!

Enjoy the colors and busy antics of winter guests all day long!

Dacoda (Siberian Husky/Timber Wolf)

Dacoda is a 1 year old Siberian Husky/Timber Wolf mix. I got Dacoda right after Christmas last year. While taking a walk around the block I saw a bunch of white fluff balls running around in a neighbor's backyard. My curiosity got the better of me and I went over to investigate. I soon saw about 8 young huskies running around and playing.

This one in particular stole my heart. His fur was so fluffy he looked super chubby. I started talking to the owner, who was looking to sell them. I explained to him how my husband has always really wanted a husky and that I could never afford one for him. He told me that he knew I would provide a good loving home for a dog so he handed me the one I was petting and said Merry Christmas!

He likes to run around the house chewing on anything he can get his mouth on. He also loves going out on hikes with me and my husband during photo shoots. Dacoda has stunning blue eyes that can intimidate people but those baby blues belong to the most loving and unique dog!

Today's Tips:

Red Carpet Dance Theme

Our 8th grade school dance theme last year was a "Red Carpet Affair" fashioned after the red carpet doings for the Oscar or Emmy Awards.

Entering into the gym, we had a large red carpet runner and a person interviewing each person coming in along with a spot light pointed in their direction. A large sign was made for the gym wall which looked like a movie theater marquee, with large red drapes on each side made out of rolls of red plastic table cover. The draping theme continued around the gym with large cut out black spot lights with yellow beams of paper shining out of the ends.

We cut out large old time movie reels, large and a little smaller and had black crepe paper rolls which we punched holes into to look life film. The film was snaked from reel to reel and along the film we hung appropriate movie posters which were donated by the local theaters. We made clap boards and tickets for wall decorations. The local party store had great stuff for those decorations.

Every student that attended got a raffle ticket to win a poster of their choice from the gym wall at the end of the night. All chaperones wore formals. It was a great dance. The students had a blast.

Humidify Your House With Your Furnace

Our house is dry in the winter in Ohio, but my dog is afraid of the humidifier. I solved this problem by purchasing a couple of the plastic-coated wire racks used for organizing cabinets, and setting it over our floor registers for our forced-air furnace. I then place a damp, but not dripping wet, hand towel over the rack. As the furnace air blows, it forces moisture into the air. It works quite well, and it doesn't scare our dog. You may need to do this once or twice a day, depending on how often the furnace is running. It is also one less appliance that needs to be plugged in and using more electricity. If you still use dryer sheets (I no longer do), you can weave one of these through the rack and place the towel on top if it. It will act as an air freshener as well!

Bamboo Wigwam for Climbing Plants

A handy gadget I've created is based on something I once saw in a catalog that joined bamboo poles together at the top to create a wigwam for vine plants. The company wanted almost $7.00 for a pair so I made my own by using margarine tub tops.

I punched holes with a single hole puncher around the edge of the top. Depending on what kind of vining plant I use and how many stakes are needed, I punch 3 to 5 holes. Then slip the hole-punched tub top over one end of each of the stakes and spread them out to create the wigwam.

Push the bottom ends into the soil a couple inches to secure them. Depending on how thick your stakes are, you may have to enlarge the hole a bit by cutting 3 or four small slits around the punched hole.

Product Review: Mini LED Indoor Plant Light

Product: Mini LED Indoor Plant Light

Manufacturer: Sunbeam

Cost: $1.00

Here's another bargain I found at the Dollar Tree store. It's a black plastic battery-operated indoor plant light. Size is 6.75 x 1.75 inches. It has a photocell that automatically turns it on in the dark, and off in daylight. It has a 4 inch long spike that you can stick in the dirt and you can aim the light, or you can remove the spike and use it as a nightlight. It uses 3 AAA batteries, and is also great to put in a dark corner or porch area where you want some light at night.

Take Seasonal Photos Of Your Home

Here is a tip that you should begin right now, in the event you ever decide to sell your home:

Take seasonal photographs of your home's exterior (with your holiday lights and decorations up, after a snowfall, with the autumn leaves, in spring with all your bulbs in bloom, the rosebushes in full glory, etc.) Place these in an album, when you get ready to sell your home, these make a seasonal sales pitch no matter the ACTUAL season!

Saving Money On Soaps

I purchase a 64 ounce bottle of liquid refill 'Soft Soap' (it's quite concentrated) at whatever store has it on sale and dilute it with equal parts of water in to empty shampoo bottles, hand soap bottles and dish soap bottles. In a pinch I've even used it as laundry soap!

There is only myself in the household and that one bottle lasts about six months or more for me at the very top cost of about 6 to 8 cents per ounce! Check out the per ounce prices next time you shop and you'll see that this certainly saves a lot of money!

Rather than buying all the different types of soaps that are costly because they are 'specialized', why not try this? After all, 'soap is soap' and my dishes, hands, and hair have not suffered a single bit!

Check Your Debit Card Charges Regularly

Check your debit card charges often. Central NY area has had a rash of unauthorized charges. Chase Bank told us that criminals can get your info from certain ATM machines and make a workable card for themselves. I think they use it as a credit card but be alert. We were scammed for 500 + and others have been scammed for gas charges in other states.

Personal Pita Pizzas

A great way to save money on ordering pizzas! We make pita pizzas, either whole wheat or white pitas work great (mini or regular), either tomato sauce and/or pizza sauce works fine, whatever cheese you like and, of course, any toppings. It works great for a quick lunch of a personal pizza.

Link: Quick Asparagus Lasagna

Sara Moulton's cooking show had an interesting recipe for asparagus lasagna with won ton squares that was a no boil, just bake, type of recipe. Although I have not prepared it, this seems like something that would work nicely when in a rush to get dinner on the table and could easily be adapted to additional variations. if your family doesn't like asparagus, how about using mixed squash or a dab of leftover (but still sprightly) veggies?

The recipe located in middle of the page.

Brew Twice and Save

Money is tight, and we love our morning coffee. I found a way to save 50%. I find the brand name on sale, and buy the darkest roast (look for scale on tin). Brew a full batch of coffee, pour into pitcher. Then fill reservoir with water again. Using the same grounds, brew again. When finished, pour in with first batch. Mix. Now you have 20 cups of coffee for the cost of 10. Remember: dark roast and regular strength cost the same! I strongly suggest using brand name (there is a difference in this case), and you can also use coupons! Live Thrifty!

Locating Old Christmas Plays

My grandmother used to collect Christmas plays to perform at church. She seems to think that they were included with the magazine Progressive Farmer. Sadly, she loaned these to a friend one day and the friend never returned them, even when she moved away! There was one in particular that she was looking for this past Christmas and it was entitled "If I Could Be a Child Again for Christmas".

I actually was in this play when I was young and now she would like to direct it again. I think it centers around a Scrooge like character who is dead set against Christmas and after being convinced by children, etc. he comes around to wanting to be a child again for Christmas. I have searched the Internet and even written to Progressive Farmer (with no reply). Has anyone ever heard of this play or know where I can find it? Does anyone even remember Christmas plays being included in Progressive Farmer? Thanks for all of your time, efforts, and help!

Cleaning a Sharp Carousel Convection Oven

I have a Sharp Carousel Convection/Microwave oven and I love it except for cleaning it. The inside of it is metal. I guess stainless steel. It doesn't say in my manual how to clean this. Food has spattered and it looks filthy. I have used the Magic Eraser and everything else I can think of. Also, the glass plate in it is made of a material unlike the usual microwave, kind of like a pizza pan. I can't get it clean either. Can I use oven cleaner on the inside of this oven or does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks so much!

Rubber Ducks Not Floating Upright

I purchased some small, but cute, rubber ducks for a Winter Carnival Duck Pond. I now find the ducks will not float upright but fall over to one side. Does anyone have any ideas on how to weight them or another way of doing them without water? I tried taping a small washer to the bottom but it didn't help. How heavy would a weight need to be? If I find something that works, I'll glue them on. Thanks for all suggestions.

Dead Rat in a Car's AC System

I know that a rat died in the AC venting system of my mom's& '96 Buick LeSabre. We are over run with Norway rats here. I knew the smell of roadkill immediately upon opening the door. I turned on the blower and could hear the fan blades hitting something soft and maggots came flying out of the system.

Anyway, I took off the plastic housing under the dash and no luck there. I don't know what else to do except take it to a repair shop or the Buick dealer here. I know that I will be charged more than I have and more than the car is worth. Other than that the only idea I have now is from my buddy who said to try a leaf blower. Where do I put the blower in the first place? I sure don't want to blow the thing further up into the system! Can anyone here help me?

Insects in House Plant Soil

Does my Spider plant soil fungus gnats? After watering my indoor potted plants, within about 36 hours, I noticed a soil surface infestation of what looks to be fungus gnat larvae. A large number of the larvae look like whitish thin worms from 1/4 in. to 1/2 in. long. I wasn't able to see the notorious black tip on the end of the body. The rest are about the size of a nail head with 6 legs and antenna.

Also I am finding a number of what looks like large eggs, about 3/16 in. diameter from God knows what insect species. They are yellowish to amber in color with watery yellowish goo inside and a thin brittle clear shell. What the heck could they be? Aliens? Am I wrong about the fungus gnats? Any suggestions? Help!

What Breed is My Dog?

I am dying to know what breed my dog is. She was a stray that my friends found. She is about 1.5 yrs old now and about 14 lbs. She has blonde and strawberry blonde longer, soft hair with a very fuzzy curled tailed and fuzzy booty. She loves to play outside, dig for moles, chase birds. She loves her mommy the best but totally loves anyone, mommy is just #1.

She is very much a socialite with other dogs and very easily trained. If I spent more time, she would do tricks I am sure. Hubby says she is so beautiful, she should be a doggy star. People have said she could be a mix of Spitz/Terrier, Corgy/Terrier, Golden Retriever/Terrier. Who knows. They all go back to Terrier though. I would just love to know for some reason.
