Compromise! If you are going to cut it, cut it armpit length, and then cut it shorter and shorter until you are both happy with it. Cutting it all off at once will be traumatic. If she is taking care of it herself, leave it alone as it is and let her decide.

You cut your daughter very long hair very short like a boy. That I did to my three daughters age 5, 7, and 12, who used very long hair until I had enough. It took long time to brush and and wash my daughter's very long hair. I told my girls that your very long hair is going to cut off short like a boy I do not care if you girls like the very short hair or not You girl are going have your very long hair cut off very short like a boy.

I took my girls to the barber shop for very short haircuts like a boy. The barbers were cutting my girls hair very short. My girls were crying when they saw their very long hair cut off The barbers finished the haircuts They showed my girls very short haircut they got My girls were crying when we left the barber shop My daughter were crying and they want their very long hair back. I told my girls that it will save time and money on brushing and washing. I will buy a haircutting kit for very short haircut. Every 3 weeks I cut their very short hair to make sure their very short hair look good My daughter now look my sons because of the very short haircut they got.

From a 11 year old who never forgave her mother for making her cut her waist length hair. I am not 40 and still have not forgotten the trauma of mum making me having my hair cut. I have 2 daughters aged 12 and 9 with waist length hair. I would take my daughters to a hair dresses or a least look at some magazines with different hair styles. I would suggest getting cut to the shoulders and then seeing how see feels.

I remember looking in the mirror when I had mine cut off and instantly screaming and hating my mother. The next day at school I was teased for looking like a boy. My hair length became a constant battle ground for the next 6 years until I reach 18 and told mum I was an adult and she could no longer do anything about it. I did try to regrow my hair but it was never the same.

I now have shoulder length hair and would never but my daughters through this trauma. Really get your daughter to think about this - because once the hair is gone its gone and like one other lady said - you need to pick your battles. I don't think hair is one of them unless it is really dirty and untidy - even then it can be a statement.

My cousin and her friends had dread locks at school - my grandmother was horrified but her friends were all nice people and did really well as school. Hope this helps

I have two daughters, 10 and 12 and we have been constantly at odds over the length of their hair...they want to keep it long and I want to cut it short because it would be easier for them to take care of. Well, about a month and a half ago, I used the new school year as the reason for insisting that they part with their long hair. I consulted with my stylist and we decided that crop cuts that were quite short in the back and on the sides would be the best way to go. The girls accepted my decision, but neither were very happy about the clippings. Now, I think they're getting used to their haircuts (which I trim monthly) and we'll probably go even shorter next year...maybe pixie length. Short hair is the only way to go with girls that age.

You should have picked very short pixie or very short bowl cut with shaven back My two daughters used have waist length hair until I took my two daughters age 7 and 12 to the barber shop for very short haircut. The barbers cutting away my daughter waist length hair into a very short boyish haircut. Now my daughters have very short boyish hair. From now on I take my daughters to the barber shop for trims to keep my daughter's very short in shape

Well I would say dont cut it to short! Specialy scence you say its long! I say cut it to the shoulders to see if you like the short look oh her. If you do you can try cutting it shorter if you would like. If you dont think the shoulder lenght looks great and it looked better longer it wont take as long to grow back! Also try a cut that will match your daughters face shape! You dont want to make her hair cut look imature for her age.

I read an article that Locks of Love is very picky as to what hair they take now, they can, there are so many donations. Make sure it is in 'perfect' condition, more than 10 inches long, thick and not that it applies to your daughter, they do not take gray hair. If she wants it cut, donate or not, let a stylist do it. She will feel like a queen!

If she is the one who wants her hair cut, I would suggest cutting it to the shoulder. I will be the same on the top and will be easier to adjust to shorter hair. Shoulder length she can still pull it back to a ponytail if she wants.

By age 12, a young woman should have control over what happens to her hair. I'd have her hair done by a professional not do it yourself. Such things are governed by shape of face, hair texture, etc.

I agree with those who've mentioned donating the hair to someone who has lost theirs due to chemo. This is a precious gift that money cant buy.

I"m guessing shoulder length is best.. ie just brushing the tops of the shoulder or right above the shoulder. Dont part it down the middle as you need to have a perfect face for that. Most people have a difference between the two sides of their face and a middle part just emphasizes that. This is an artistic endeavor that I think is similar to sculpting.

Hi Frank ! Just wondering, do you want it cut or does she? I agree with Jane from Florida. The hair should be cut by a stylist and donated to Locks of Love. This benefits children and adults that have lost their hair due to cancer. Your daughter could feel proud that she helped someone. We use to live not far from where you are, so as a former Long Islander, please consider her feelings and wishes too. You'll both be happier! ;o)

Talk to a hairdresser BEFORE cutting her hair and have them advise you about donating to Locks of Love which make wigs for people undergoing Chemotherapy.
There is a minimum length that they are able to use, so donate her hair to a good cause IF you decide to cut of any substantial length!

My grand daughter has very, very thin fly away hair that should be kept short. She wants it long (looks terrible) our compromise is this: she gets good grades or she trades in her hair.
Drat, who knew she would be an honor student! I am waiting for that first C,, but I don't think that will happen. It is her incentive.
I hate it, but a deal is a deal. She is in 7th grade and her hair has not been cut since 4th grade, at which time she agreed and it looked ABSOLUTELY adorable, but she wanted to grow it.
I agree, pick your battles and try to compromise.

I don't think you should cut her hair. That could be traumatizing to her. Short hair on a girl doesn't look good. The bible says a woman's hair is her glory! Have long hair. There is so much you can do with long hair!

As you see by my name, I am old enough to have to have dealt with a 12 year old in my day. Your 12 y.o. is almost a "tween" and I am thinking she is possibly dealing with a lot of peer pressure and probably wants to fit in with the crowd. First of all, don't cut her hair just because. She needs to want it short. If it is because she won't take care of it without pleading and cajoling, you might rethink how to handle this. You don't want/need a rebellious child popping out all for the sake of hair.

As Dr. Phil says, pick your battles. If she wants this and is okay with short and wants to go short, I'd think at 12 years old she has an idea or two about the look she'd like to end up with after the cut. If she isn't into hair, isn't able to care for it for health reasons then sure go ahead and suggest away or cut it if you are the sole caretaker.

I just wanted to add that I would rather have a child with unruly, unkept and even dirty hair that I would want a kid being disrespectful all the way up to doing drugs or being promiscuous.

Yep, I agree with the Lock of Love recommendation. They have a web site and you can print off the form as well as look for a hairdresser in your area who will cut her hair for free.

Why not cut at least 10-12 inches off and donate it ti Locks of Love that makes wigs for kids that have lost their hair to cancer. My niece did this and is growing it again so it can be cut.

Take your time figuring out how short to make it. Err on the side of too long because you can always cut off more, but it can take a long time to grow back. If you're going to cut it shorter than shoulder length and you're not used to cutting short hair, I'd recommend getting it done by someone who cuts hair professionally. It's hard to get a short style looking good and it's VERY easy to take off too much. My mom cut my hair when I was twelve and one little snip too short turned my haircut into a disaster because it all had to be evened out and ended up WAY too short.

Oh please, please, please, if your daughters hair can be cut enough for a 10+ inch ponytail, let a hair dresser cut it for locks of love. The organization that makes wigs for kids with cancer. My neice got a beautiful wig and it helped her emotionally so much.

I'd cut her hair off 1" at a time. Have your daughter hold a mirror and let her judge for herself how short she would like her hair cut. Or if you're not sure that you would do a good enough job to her liking take her to a beauty salon.
