Daily Thrifty Tips - November 17, 2008

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. We have some new crafts today and will be publishing lots of crafts between now and Christmas. Homemade gifts can be a great way to save money on holiday gifts. We are also hearing of a lot of families not gifting this year or setting spending limits. The key to the holidays is having fun, not going broke. The goal of this newsletter between now and Christmas will be to look for ways to have a holiday season that is Thrifty and Fun. Craft: Recycled "New" Outfits

Look what mamma made! I made these outfits for my two daughters. The older one is from my dad's old shirt with some denim curtains that were given to me, then I appliquéd a heart on an old t shirt. The little one had put a hole in her knees of her jeans, so I took off the legs, added a skirt to the bottom, then made a top to match the fabric. I used another of my dad's old shirts. Both my girls loved their new clothes, and of course grandad was very proud of the recycling.

Craft Project: Crocheted Victorian Tree

Here is another ornament I made and didn't sell. This one is a Crocheted Victorian Tree. As most of you know, Americana is tan, burgundy and navy. Well, Victorian is tan, burgundy and hunter green. It is a beautiful yarn, and you can't get it in the stores except during the holidays.

What I did, was start with two strands crocheted at once. I started with an "N" hook and a chain 2, then made 1 sc (single crochet) in the second stitch from the first chain. Chain 1 and turn, making a single crochet in that same one, then one across.

For you seasoned crocheters, you know we are making a "V" shaped by increasing just one stitch per row. Row 1 is two stitches, Row 2 is three, row 3 is four, and so on. I put on 7 rows, which makes the item about 4x4 inches total.

The last row, I chain 3 and make a "scallop" on each stitch across the bottom, breaking off and weaving in the tail.

On a trip to the Dollar Tree, I found strands of gold, green, red, silver, and blue beads that are just glued onto the string.

They were perfect for the tree's ornaments, so I bought a lot and cut them off the string during TV or whenever. You will save time and your hands if you use a toenail clipper. It gets closer and you won't cramp up.

I cool glued them to the tree, topping it off with a fabric star.

Because your item is crocheted, you really don't need to add a hanger.

Use Hanging Metal Shelves to Organize the Garage

My wife convinced me to remove the clutter in our garage with more stuff - large metal/wire shelves that hang high enough not to hit cars, but sit low enough to store plenty of boxes and other must have seasonal possessions. They look nice too considering it's just a garage.

Glittery Wooden Clothes Pins for Christmas Ornaments

Spray pin with cheap white paint and use what ever coloring items you want. Good for chip bag clips,refrigerator magnets (glue a strip of magnetic piece to pin). I like glitter for Christmas tree ornaments. When clipped on to pine tree the tree lights really reflect the glitter.

Use Rubbing Alcohol to Remove Hairspray

Hairspray on eyeglass lenses is a tough one to remove. Take a rubbing alcohol pad (or a little on a cotton ball from the bottle) and rub over the lenses til they feel smooth again. Rinse well under running water and use a little Dawn detergent (this does not harm any anti-reflective coatings or scratch cote you may have on your lenses) as you do not want to place the glasses back on with the rubbing alcohol on them. Effectively drying your lenses with a microfiber CLEAN cloth with make them shine. Be sure and launder the cloths by hand with Joy or Dawn every so often as they get dirty and then, eventually, you're wiping dirt back ON your glasses.

Stay Home for the Holidays to Save Money

We opt'd to do a video travel this year. We will be spending time with local family that will travel to see our distant family and we will make and send the video. The traveling family will do the same once they arrive. =) Instead of giving the traveling family a present, we are helping with airfare and travel expenses. Our family grew this past year and its nearly impossible to travel with two children 1 and 3 and two 13 and 11. This way we can spend more on our new home and stay safe, warm and hassle free and still be in touch with our out of state family =)

Clean Your Toilet with Baking Soda and Red Wine Vinegar

My family and decided to go green back in August. We live in a rural community and there are few green products available. One day while experimenting with a better way to clean the commode, my daughter and I decided to use baking soda and plain white vinegar. This did a decent job, but there was lots of scrubbing involved. The next time we tried baking soda again, but this time we used red wine vinegar and it was amazing. Foamed longer and left bowl completely clean NO SCRUBBING. It left no dirt and did not stain my commode (which was my fear in using the red wine vinegar). It was amazing. This is my new eco friendly toilet cleaner.

Craft: Frame Calendar Pictures as Gifts

Here is a nice, inexpensive, but still good-looking holiday gift. It's also a good way to recycle old calendar pages.

Find a calendar, either an old one of yours or the ultra-cheap ones that go on sale very late in the year, per perhaps ones from the dollar store. Cut out all the pictures, leaving a bit of a border around it. (You can also use nice looking magazine pages and other such pics.)

Get some matting (those cardboard frames you can get at craft and art stores), or get nice frames at thrift shops or dollar stores...the size of course depends on the size of the calendar pictures. Put the pictures in the mats or frames, and you have a nice looking decoration for someone's wall. You can even decorate the frames yourself with paint or things you can glue on. Use the inexpensive mats and use all the pages of the calendar and give them a set of pictures they can rotate out on their desk or wall.

Ideas for pictures:

• For young boys: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Transformers, Pokemon, pirates, samurai or ninjas, cars, planes, rock stars, astronomy or weather pics.

• For young girls: Horses, puppies, kittens, "hunky" guys, favorite actors, Hollywood, dancing, rock stars.

• For women: Cute or pretty animals, vacation spots and landscapes, favorite actors or singers, handsome men, flowers, things that spark their particular interests.

• For men: Cars, pretty women, cityscapes, action movies, horror or macabre stuff if they're into it, Rock Band or other video games.

Using Up Overripe Fruit

When the fruit in our fruit basket starts to ripen a bit faster than normal, I peel it, if necessary, cut it up into chunks and then freeze it in a layer on a cookie sheet. When frozen, I put the fruit chunks into freezer storage bags and pop them back into the freezer. When I make a muffin or pancake recipe calling for frozen fruit, I just take out the right amount. This way I always have fruit is still useful and adds to the nutritional value of my baking.

Store Produce In The Garage

If you have several heads of cabbage you can put them in a cooler. It is insulated and mice can't get in. The cabbages will keep in a cooler in a garage for several months.

Also if it hasn't frosted yet and you still have tomatoes, you can put them in boxes layering between rows with several layers of newspaper. They will ripen slowly and you can have fresh tomatoes. The box needs to be in a cool place, but not cold, like a basement. You can also use the green tomatoes for fried green tomatoes. I just flour and fry in a skillet with shortening.

On carrots, if you have room in your refrigerator crisper or an extra refrigerator, you can put them in there and they will keep quite a long time. Especially if you use them 2 - 3 times a week. You don't have to spend any time freezing or canning.

Also, apples keep for a long time in the refrigerator or put in a box putting layers of newspapers between rows. Check frequently and discard if there are any bad ones.

Keeping Buns Warm in a Crockpot

How do you keep buns warm in a crockpot? Do you have to warm them first? Or do they warm well in the crockpot? And how long should you give them to heat up? Should you line the crockpot with a towel and dampen it? This is for a potluck where I need to heat them first at home and keep them warm, hopefully.

West Bend Bread Maker: White Bread Recipe

I have a West Bend automatic bread and dough maker. The number is 41063. I loaned my manual out but need a recipe from it. Isela Phelps' "Loom Knitting Primer"

I have a question about Isela Phelps' "Loom Knitting Primer". I can't find a way to get the answer. On the first project (a hat) on page 38. The instructions for shaping the crown is very confusing. Take every 3rd stitch and slip to the peg on the right. You then knit around. You do this for 2 rows. It does not make sense to me. On the second round you cannot stretch the stitches so far. What about these directions aren't I getting? Thanks so much.

Maintaining a Paper Shredder

I have inherited an Aurora Cross Cut AS700X paper shredder without a manual. I searched the manufacturers web site for information. This model is no longer listed. I e-mailed the manufacturer and never received an answer. I would like to know how do I maintain this shredder. I do believe it should be oiled and sharpened. What type of oil is used, and does it get sharpened? I will use it weekly for light to medium shredding. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks to all.

"Bright Lights, Big City" Christmas 4-H Float Ideas

I have a "Horse and Pony" 4-H club and we are going to be in a Christmas parade on December 6th. The theme is: "Bright Lights, Big City". There will be a few kids riding horses and we have a 28 ft flatbed trailer to decorate. There is also a "mini horse" that is our mascot. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.

Our Trip On The Polar Express

Last year, we gave our boys, then 7 and 5, a trip on the Polar Express. We were unable to do it on Christmas Eve so we did it the day before. It was a total surprise. The train was in Hood River, about an hour away from our home. We gave the boys their tickets and pajamas on the way. They were both pretty excited but especially our 5 year old, Ethan. He kept reading his name on the printed mock-up we made and smiling.
