If a gift giving occasion has arisen and you've found you're running low on funds, pal up to friend or loved one who'll also be giving a gift for the same person. Let the 2 (or more) of you all go in together on a gift. The more allowed in on this gift the better as you're more likely to acquire a gift that the receiver has had his or her eye on!

I agree that going in on a gift with others is a good idea, BUT make sure everybody involved has a clear understanding of how much you are willing to chip in. I recently said I would chip in on a "going away" gift for someone with the assumption of how much each of the families would spend. Unfortunately for us, the "shopper" didn't have the same assumption and each family got socked with an over $200 bill on our gift. The gift was handmade and designed especially for the recipient so we felt we had to pay it. We had to chalk this one up to a very expensive life lesson.
