Vol. 7, Num. 194, October 6, 2008 (Read It Online)

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and isn't getting hit too hard by the stock markets dramatic decline today. It's scary to see these type of declines when so many of us have our retirement in 401k's.

There's a disturbing recall today involving several flavors of Blue Cat Flavor Drink. The FDA has detected melamine contamination in some of their drinks.

You can read the details about it here:

http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01896.html

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Craft Project: Homemade Fall Place Mats

The leaves are changing colors on the trees! What a perfect time to make a personalized Fall place mat for your little ones! We made these last year and the leaf colors aren't as vibrant as they had been when we first made them. We may have to sneak out and grab some new leaves and make another set this year.

Approximate Time: 20 minutes or less

Supplies:

  • Leaves
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Large Construction Paper
  • Glue Stick
  • Scissors
  • Photo of Child

Instructions:

Collect leaves with your child. You may want to press the leaves in between the pages of a heavy book over night if they are curled on the edges.

Glue a photo of your child to the construction paper. I glued ours to a piece of solid white paper first, so that it was matted and stood out a bit.

Let your child arrange the leaves on the construction paper in any manner they wish to do.

When they are arranged to their liking, use a dab of glue to hold each in place.

Carefully cover the entire sheet of construction paper with a piece of clear contact paper, pressing out any air bubbles.

Cover the backside with contact paper as well.

Trim the edges of the place mat with a scissors and then enjoy using it daily!

Kozmo (Persian Cat)

Kozmo is a 4 year old Pure Bred Persian cat. A friend got him for me 3 years ago.

He likes to stand in the kitchen sink and look out the window, something he is not supposed to do, lol.

He is so cute when he boxes with my sister's cat.

Maxwell (West Highland Terrier)

Maxwell is a 4 year old Westie. He likes to cuddle, chase next doors cat, and watch TV.

He is the sweetest, most loving little dog you could wish for. We found him sitting in the armchair like this one morning. We thought about buying him a pipe and a pair of slippers for Christmas!

Bogey is a 1 1/2 year old Yorkie. We got him a little over a year ago from a breeder in Lake Mary, Florida.

Bogey likes giving kisses, going for walks with his dog friends, playing with his two siblings (cats), chewing on bones, playing fetch, and cuddling.

Today's Tips:

Use Your Kroger Charge Card To Save

We have a Kroger charge card, you get a discount on food or other Kroger products. When we buy $100 worth in a month, we get 15 cents off gas. We get the grocery ads in the mail on Wednesday, my husband makes the grocery list from this. We add things we need, they have some good sales. On certain days we can get milk for $1.99, how much better can it get. Also every three months, we receive four $5.00 checks to spend at Krogers and we know how much we are spending. We have a freezer and when they have TV dinners for .69 cents, we stock up.

Use Vinegar as a Weed Killer

This is not original; however, I have discovered not too many people are aware of this. I have been doing this very successfully for many years.

I don't like to put "poison" of any kind in my yard because of pets and children--and frankly, wildlife, but I really don't like weeds--especially in my walk and driveway and up against the house, and pulling them can sometimes be difficult. The solution: pour any kind of cheap white vinegar on them, they die and are easy to pull, you may have to do it twice but it never fails to work. The smell disappears quickly!

Source: I don't remember where I first heard of this or when but I have been doing this for at least 30 years,

Cloth Invasion: Use Fabric instead of Paper

When I was trying to strain my brain to see what more I could do to try and help the earth, I looked around for what we used a lot of and just threw away. The most obvious answer was threefold: napkins, toilet paper (which we also used as tissues) and paper towels.

All were easily solved. We went to thrift stores and garage sales and bought cloth napkins. They didn't have to be fancy, just usable. They can be used a day or two by each person before just throwing them into the normal wash. (They don't take up that much room.)

Now the tissues: Mom and I now use handkerchiefs, one handkerchief per day and they get washed at the end of the week. It's amazing how much TP we used just blowing noses. We both have allergies, so that makes it even worse.

As for the paper towels: cloth does just as good a job for cleaning things as paper towels are. For these jobs, I use old sheets, stained or ripped clothing that can't be given to Goodwill, old towels, and other cloth that would otherwise just get thrown away. Knit/fluffy socks are great for dusting, T-shirts and other porous cloth for normal cleaning (including glass), and rough cloth for scrubbing. They don't fall apart like paper towels, either, and also can be thrown into the wash.

A note on these ideas however: if cleaning up something really nasty, like oil or grease or ink. I recommend just throwing the cloth away or wash it in a load with only other such cloths.

Attach Spare Buttons to Cardboard

Here is a tip I hope that everyone can use. Whenever you buy new clothing, you will almost, always get a extra button in case you lose one. Well, I was always losing the extra button, until I came up with this idea. I take the extra button and sew it on to a card or a piece of cardboard. That way I still have the button and I can match it up the garment with the missing button. For extra added insurance, you write a little note to remind yourself where the button belongs (just in case you have two or more of the same buttons).

Easy Pumpkin Table Decorations

Take a roll of toilet paper, set it in the center of a 20 inch circle of orange fabric or tissue paper. Bring the fabric or tissue paper up around the sides of the toilet paper roll and tuck ends into the roll hole on top. Cut a stem out of brown felt or tissue paper, 3 inches wide by 4 inches long. Roll the stem into a 4 inch long tube, glue if desired, and stick stem into the hole on top of the pumpkin.

Christmas Club Accounts

This tip is late for this year but (I think) invaluable for the years to come. Get a Christmas Club account at your bank. They either deduct a set amount from your checking account ($20 a month or more) or you deposit monthly. It runs for 10 months and at the end of the time Oct/Nov you get a check for the years' amount plus interest. I'm careless about putting money by every month, but if it's not in the account, I can't spend it and then I have a lump sum when I most need it. One year I had to draw out the accumulated dollars in the summer, but I've done this for a long time.

Freeze Milk During Vacation

When you leave for vacation, put the milk left in the carton in the freezer. Just be sure the carton isn't full. When you get home, put it in the refrigerator to defrost. It saves money and makes it that you don't need to go out for milk as soon as you get home.

Substitute Almond Flour In Baking

I love to bake but I am doing low carb so I have tried to find a good alternative to white flour. I tried soy but did not like the texture. Recently I tried almond flour which usually isn't on the grocery shelf so I grind up whole almonds in my blender. If I buy salted which are cheaper (about $2.50 an 8 oz can at Dollar General), I just omit the salt in the recipe. I am still experimenting because it doesn't work in every recipe but it makes a great banana bread.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The congregation of a small stone church decided that the stone, which formed the step up to the front door had become too worn by its years of use, and would have to be replaced. Unfortunately, there were hardly any funds available for the replacement. Then someone came up with the bright idea that the replacement could be postponed for many years by simply turning the block of stone over.

They discovered that their great-grandparents had beaten them to it.

Keeping Animals Out of Your Garbage Can

We have been having a problem in my neighborhood for the last 2-3 months with some animal (we assume it is a dog) coming in the middle of the night, knocking over trash cans, dragging the trash bag out of it, and then dragging the trash bag into someone else's yard (mostly mine) and digging through the bag.

I have contacted animal control and was informed that the small city that I live in only contracts for 1 hour of county animal control services a month. So they may or may not be able to catch the dog. I have bought dog repellent granules from Home Depot, they worked about 1 week. I have tried black pepper, red pepper and chili powder.

I have sprayed my can repeatedly with bleach which keeps them out of my garbage. I have even sprinkled bleach around the perimeter of my yard. This is getting expensive. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anyone tried the ultrasonic dog repellents in the yard, do they work?

Using a Cycling Thermostat

Balto gas and electric is offering cycling thermostats. It would be set to turn off air conditioning during peak times of use. Then it would save me money. My problem is I am not well (ie. I have Fibromyalgia and allergies). I need to save money but I don't want to make my health worse because of the lack of air conditioning. I don't keep it that cold, but I do keep it on in the summer. Any ideas on this thing would be appreciated.

Fruit Fly Control

There have been times in the past when a few fruit flies would come into my house via grocery shopping and they multiplied. I usually make sure there is no good food source for the little rascals, swat the ones I can, and they are gone within a few days.

We had a few show up about a month ago and I did all the usual stuff, but we soon had an invasion. I searched the house, and found that my son had left an open cup in the bottom of his closet. It had contained a milkshake, and the little buggers came flying out of it like crazy.

I make sure that all food is covered, dishes are rinsed and put in the dishwasher, trash is removed daily. I removed the cat bowls and am temporarily using small paper plates that are tossed out daily. I've even put all the plants outdoors. The little monsters will not go away.

It's annoying to try to eat a sandwich and shew fruit flies at the same time. They are in every room in the apartment. I know they usually lay their eggs in a food source, but I feel like I've eliminated any potential nesting areas. Short of an insect bomb, does anyone have an idea of how to get rid of these pests?

Editing Blemishes from Photos

I will be taking my son's senior pictures and am looking for suggestions for a photo editing software. Most importantly, I need to be able to edit out some acne that he is going through.

I currently have a software that does some editing, but I can't edit out blemishes. My son is kind of shy and says he would rather have me do the pics than a professional because he feels more comfortable. I do take nice pictures, so I don't mind, but unless I get a good software editing program, my pics won't be as good as they should because his acne won't be as toned down as a professional could do.

If anyone out there has used a photo editing software that has the capability of editing out blemishes, I would appreciate the recommendation. Thanks.
