My Dog Has Diarrhea |
|
|
My dog has diahrrea. He's had it before and responded to antibiotics and everything was "coming out" fine, but it started out again, I got antibiotics again from the vet and it's been four days and he still has loose stools.
Sorry to talk about something so non-pleasant, but I'm resorting to taking him off solid foods as that is what my dog book suggested. Anybody out there have any good ideas? My vet said he has colitis and it's awfully hard to stop the cycle. And don't suggest cottage cheese as I'm a non-dairy eater and I come from the school of thought that dairy encourages diahrrea, so I wouldn't want to give that to my dog.

Give him pumpkin. Libby's 100% pure pumpkin in a can. Make sure there are no other ingredients in it. Dogs love it. It's high in fiber and will help bind him up. It really makes a big difference. Don't know the size of your dog, but for larger dogs, I would start off with 2 heaping tablespoons mixed in his food. I know it's hard to deal with and they are so uncomfortable too, but sometimes the natural remedies work better...and antibiotics can cause diarrhea.

My mastiff had 6 puppies, 2 under the house, 2 in a place provided for her, 1 born dead and the other in the pool that is for her. She does not nurse them but acts protective. We gathered all the puppies and put them in a safe place with her. Two days later she decides to move one to under the house, which she is not allowed under the house but we have removed some of the bricking because we were doing some work on the house and that is how the under the house started.
We went and got the other puppies and put them with her since she just moved the one, the next day 3 out of 4 were dead. So we just left her alone and then the next day the last one was dead. I don't know if she laid on them or what happened. She has only had puppies once before and only had 1 at that time and it died because she would not feed it. Do I need to have her spayed? Will she ever get the hang of it?

Well, my dog has the same problem right now, and what I have been doing is giving my dog pepto-bismo, but in the pill form, and then put it in the pill pockets that you can buy at your local vet, and also giving her rice. The rice will make its stool harder. I hope this helps! ~Tarynn

My dog is fifteen and used to take Rimadyl. Recently he was put on Prednisone due to very bad arthritis in his back legs. He immediately developed severe diarrhea. Has been weaned off the prednisone but the diarrhea continues. He hasn't had food in five days. Is taking some water. Refuses any food, including chicken, hamburger or rice. Even though he's fifteen, he's was in really good health, except for the arthritis. I feel that the steroid irritated his intestines. How to proceed?

My dog has chronic inflammatory bowel syndrome and is currently going through a crisis with diarrhea as a result. The Vet put him on Purina EN and told me to give him chicken and rice. I've been giving my dog all three, however, he stilll has diarrhea. I think he may have to go on Prednisone for a few days.

(submitted via email) I know this is going to sound silly- - but cater to your dog. Give your dog extra loving and petting...make sure you don't rile the dog up too much (i.e rough play or fetching) We have found that when our dog gets diarrhea that she is stressed or upset about something....normally we give her boiled chicken and rice or just plain rice, and then start mixing the rice with her food to get her back into her own food (once the diarrhea subsides. Try this out with your dog and let me know if it works! GOOD LUCK!

My dog has diarrhea right now. I've noticed that if he doesn't eat all day, he doesn't have diarrhea. But once he starts to eat, that's when he has diarrhea.
He eats, drink, and is still very active. He doesn't seem sick or anything. Is this happening to anyone? I don't want to take him in and have to waste money if there is nothing wrong with him. Vets love to make money off anything, and I'm not a big fan of going to the VET unless it's really necessary.

Hi, I once had a dog with Colitis. The best thing for your dog is an all natural diet or even raw for that matter! Once my dog was diagnosed we went to a raw diet and then went to our local pet food stores and found raw diet dog food. He did very well with this! As far as dealing with the diarrhea, try some bland cooked food such as a mixture of rice oatmeal and chicken, works like a charm!

Bob Martin - STRESS can cause diarrhea, NOT the doctors. It's horrible to assume your vet actually "caused" diarrhea to make money. Your pet was hospitalized, was administered medications, and had surgery. If the stress of hospitalization or surgery didn't do it, the medications might have!! You did the right thing for your pet for having him neutered. Now do the right thing for your pet by taking care of his medical needs.

No pun intended with my name. My dog has had Diarrhea now for 3 days he was in for the snip and was fine after the first day then the following day he started the Diarrhea so we waited a day in case it was a 24 hour bug and then we took him back to the vet only another branch same vet different town (closer) the vet was undisturbed by it gave us antibiotics and a gelling agent in it to the cost of a further £28.00 but our dog is still no better.
I am quite angry now that to think we have paid for a service and the dog has come out being worse and now we are expected to pay for more treatment when it was picked up in the vets! I will have to take my dog back and kick up about it, it makes you think of what happens when you take your car to a mechanic who botches up your car to make more money out of you and all the time my dog is now suffering. any advice would be helpful. I just hope that my dog gets better soon as I can ill afford to pay for much more treatment to keep the vets in profit.

Hi every one, my pup Missy got really bad diarrhea, I took her to the vet and he put her on metronizole. I have her on boiled chicken and rice and boiled hamburger and rice. He checked her stool for coccidia, and her for Giardia (spelling) then did a heartworm, check. It still did not go away. I mean after I took her off the antibiotics it came back. we went back for x-rays and a CBC blood panel. we have found nothing and I had to put her back on metrontozle an antibiotic. I made an appointment for an internist on october 4th 2007. I am really worried I did notice that in my diet I have too much meat I think. I am going to add more rice and try again in a couple of days to get her off the antibiotics again. If it doesn't work the internist it is. She is a 3 year old shihtzu and I lost my other pup a 7 year shihtzu to lymphoma cancer in 2004 and I am so worried. thanks every one sincerely, Denise and Missy

Mine has it right now. It has been going on for 3 days but not as bad. He drinks lots, eats normally and is active and alert. He has only vomitted once in those 3 days and has not had one accident in the house. Rice does help al ot. He does not go to dump a lot more like his normal 3 day dumps, but the stools are still a bit liquidly. 2 of these stools had mucous in them now they are yellow, none of them have blood in it. He has no worms been treated for them 2 months ago. He is up to date on all his shots, so I can rule out pavro virus. He has been wormed 3 times before I got him at 9 weeks old, and then again the 2 months ago. Right now I am feeding rice and cooked pork hearts with no spices, 3 tablespoons of yogurt and 2 teaspoons of flax. He had been off solid foods for 22 hours to give his system a rest. I gave him immodium the kind for humans 1 tablet only for only 2 days. It stop the dumps for the time being, but not the liquid stools. Try giving the dog pedylite or gatorade to replenish their water. Try feeding your dog water through a spray bottle if he won't drink from the bowl(for some reason they like the feel of the plastic against their teeth). It works on my dog at least I can keep monitoring his water intake if he won't drink from the bowl. I hear the pumpkin thing is supposed to work I will try it if nothing else will work. So far the above has worked. The stools he gets next I hope will be more solid. Only started the flax and yogurt today. I am thinking he got fish oil the day before this happened he might be allergic to it. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with him at all.

My dog lost his appetite except for a few bites each day during a bout of digestive upset. Tried one anti-nausea drug (don't remember name) then had to go to the emergency clinic. The clinic gave him Cerenia, another anti-nausea drug, and it worked well. I still had to coax his appetite back with small meals (canned chicken, Gerber Stage II baby food (doesn't have onion powder)) every 4 hours. Daily it improved. Unfortunately he had a relapse when I gave him Evo canned food.

My dog has had diarrhea for over a week now and this is not normal for her. She got into some stuff at a cottage we took her to, i'm thinking a bone or something. Nothing is working and we are trying to keep her drinking water, even put her on gastro food from the vet and her stool has been tested for parasites, still no cure. She has no appetite and I'm at my wits end.

My puppy is almost 6 months old and for the past 2 months he has had diarrhea on and off. We took him to the vet a couple times and they say that nothing is wrong. He just has a sensitive stomach. We put him on RX strenth Eukanuba food. It cures the diarrhea, but everytime we try to wean him back to the regular food, he gets diarrhea again. The vet said we will just have to keep him on the RX food for a while. Try asking about the RX food. It is more expensive, but it might be all you need. It is a low residue food.

My 13 week old lab has diarrhea. Everything else is normal with him, no vomit same appetite, playful and hydrated. I just mixed boiled rice with his reg food. Any other suggestions. He started with one bout of it yesterday morning then I had 3 surprises in the middle of the night, and then 2 more this morning, he seems hydrated (pink tongue, wet nose) and is drinking normally. I think he may have obviously eaten something since apparently these breed of dogs eat EVERYTHING. How long should I expect it to last if it was just ingestion of something he shouldnt have had.

My dog Belle had Diarrhea. Shes always had problems before when it came to this but this seems to be worse. I am only 15 but I don't understand because like me, my parents don't understand either. We have 3 dogs all together but I'm scared that we might only have 2 soon. I never thought the diarrhea could be so seriouse. Belle is a very old dog but she means alot to me and I couldn't stand watching her die. Me and my mother are going to go to the vets office and hopefully they can do something for her. We've tried white rice and all that kinds of treatment but it just isn't working. I don't want to see one of my dogs die. I was watching her while my parents were at work at I noticed that there was some blood and I knew that wasn't normal. So I really would like to know if my dog is going to live threw this.

I would suggest actually going back to the same vet, if this is a vet you have used and trusted in the past. "Colitis" is inflammation of the intestinal lining (from any cause), and often is a catch-all diagnosis when no specific cause is found on the fecal, physical exam or bloodwork. Because many different things can cause it, there are many different things that might fix it. Meaning- your vet knows what he has already done to try to help your dog, and he very likely has a plan (in his head or written down) for what to do next if the illness persists. If anything has changed at all with your dog's condition, however insignificant it may seem to you, it just might be the one clue the vet needs to figure out just what is causing the colitis and what will fix it. A new vet is like starting over. He will need to be told about everything that has already happened with your dog and the exact treatments given. Because the new vet may not be sure of the circumstances under which a laboratory test was performed, he might need to do it again, at your expense. My advice is to give your vet another chance. Have him explain what he wants to do now, and what he plans to do if that doesn't fix it. Sometimes the owner is spared from having a zillion tests done on the first visit for a definate diagnosis for diarrhea, assuming the pet appears otherwise healthy, because most of the time the first treatment will work. Ask your vet if it is ok to fast your dog for 24-48 hrs (nothing but water, then gradually introduce small amounts of bland food like boiled chicken and rice NO SPICES OR FLAVOR ADDED). If your dog is healthy enough to go without eating for a day, it might give his poor intestines time to heal.

First coat his bowl with kaopectate . Then put in scrambled eggs with cream of wheat cereal with a little garlic powder & cranberry sauce & a tiny bit of bacon fat if you have it. Just a tiny bit, alot of animals Love It, I know Mine do . Don't want to load poochie with grease . Smear it on paws & face if pooch won't eat it at first, he'll have to clean himself . Gradually add in a bit of regular food ,could the food perhaps be causing this? & get another vet if all this one can do is give antibiotics ,or are you demanding them when something else might be better ? Yes Dairy can give Trots to some creatures ,human & otherwise ,but Not All,some do fine ,others react the Opposite way . Never worry about posting "Unpleasant " subjects. We are here to help each other & our animal family.

RE: My Dog Has Diarrhea
My little pomeranian has gotten pancreatitis from people giving him scraps for treats, which makes everybody unhappy. Our vet's recipe for "belly problems" goes along the lines of others here. Prepare 1 cup rice (brown or white) according to package directions. Boil a pound of chicken liver, and 2 eggs. Peel, then chop the eggs into fine pieces or use a food processer to make small crumbly pieces, then mix it into the cooked rice. Do the same with the chicken livers. Store in the fridge. My guy weighs about 10 pounds, and we give him a couple tablespoons, every few hours to start, and work up to about 1/4 cup as he tolerates things better. When he's eating this fairly well, we start adding dry food. Then gradually give more dry and less rice as his belly tolerates. Hope this helps.

My poor little Jack Russell dog has Irritible Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Didn't know what was causing her diarrhea but it had a lot of blood in it. She normally weighs 13# but when I took her to the vet to find out what was wrong, she was down to 11# and also not interested in eating her dry dog food. I was happy to hear the diagnosis - the vet asked that I feed her white rice and chicken - 3:1 (3 boiled rice, 1 chicken) I initially was feeding her a total of 1 cup/day of the mixture, 3x/day. She stayed on this for 1 week. Then the vet (she was doing much better by now - solid stools) had me do 1/2 the rice/chicken mixture and half of her regular food for one week. She is much better now and is on her usual dry dog food only diet. I am prepared to move her back to the rice chicken diet if she has trouble in the future. Hope this helps you. I felt so much better to know what her problem was and how to "fix" it. The Vet also gave her a pill (2xday) for 2 days and a liquid prescription, 1gr a day for 2 weeks.

Hi Margie,
I don't know why you would think that about dairy and animals. In addition to dog food, my two have organic whole milk twice a day along with a cup of organic cottage cheese. When I can purchase heavy whipping cream (organic) they have that also.
Never have I had a probelm with a loose stool, nor are they the least bit overweight.
My vet said to give the kitties cottage cheese for a loose stool along with a hardboiled egg.
I agree that if this does not clear up, I would see another vet.
I just wanted to go on record as saying dairy products are in no way harmful to my dogs ... or my cats.
Thanks and good luck with your dog.

I just read the "dog owner's home veterinary handbook" and it says to only use boiled hamburger with the rice 12 hours after NO vomiting. boiling it will remove the fat (fat delays the stomach from emptying). If you give Pedialyte, dilute it by half and add to the water bowl. If it won't drink it, only give water. Pepto-Bismol and Kaopectate are safe. I love this book.

My grandmother has had animals for many years and the trick she uses I have never seen not work. I have tried it on my dog when she has an upset stomach from eating something in the yard and it works.
Mix hamburger and rice, not too much hamburger, it will be too rich and give it to your dog. I give it out in rations and watch the dog for signs of improvement, if this does not work within 48 hours, I would take the dog to the vet.

For the immediate until you can get your dog to the vet (find another one quick), give him all-natural PLAIN LIVE ACTIVE CULTURE YOGURT such as Danone. Give him a little -- not too much -- according to his weight a couple of times per day until he clears up. Should not take more than 48 hours. Also for keeping him from dehydrating, I use light, low sodium clear chicken broth mixed with water. Don't feed him anything else abnormal or you may make it worse. Dogs and other animals don't adjust to sudden feed changes very well.

Did dog have antibiotics for illness? Maybe like humans, you need to restore good critters to intestines and digestive track with active yogurt.

I agree, try a different vet...the pepto also would work. I know when this happened to my dog, the vet took him off solid food, and had me feed him cottage cheese. Then start mixing just a little cat food in it. Cat food is supposed to be easier to digest. Hope it works

You should definitely take your dog to see a different vet if the diarrhea does not clear up within 48 hours. There are many causes for diarrhea including, but not limited to: change in diet, stress, disease, illness, and parasites. The diet and stress inducing life changes would only cause temporary diarrhea, but anything longer than 48 hours would more likely be from illness, disease or parasites. It is crucial that your pet see a vet for these causes, as delaying treatment could allow the dog to become severely dehydrated, or worse. Please consider taking the dog to a different vet, if the one you are currently using doesn't seem to be doing anything helpful. It may not be the most "thrifty" solution, but it may be the safest.

try 1 tablespoon pepto bismal our vet says it's safe for dogs. also with the rice try a little bit of browned hamburger but make sure to rinse it under some water to rinse off the grease as to not upset the dogs stomach any further. our vet had us do this with our dog when she got cancer and was un able to eat dog food

what has caused the diarrhea? Stress? Change in food? How long has he/she had the diarrhea? In the meantime...Cooked white rice or cooked white rice mixed in with your dogs normal food should help. I would also locate the reason why your dog may be having diarrhea and ease those issues if possible as well. The rice diet should only be for a few days because it will backfire eventually producing loose stools.
