Halloween: Clark Kent Costume

This year my son DJ was invited to a Halloween party at the last minute and had to come up with something quick. We pulled this idea together with things we had around the house and it was a huge hit! (Especially with the girls.) He makes a great Clark Kent!

Izzy (Staffordshire Terrier)

Izzy is a 14 month old Staffordshire Terrier (Staff). i bought her as companionship for my other dog who is 6 months older. She runs around the quarry with her brother until they are so knackered they can't run any more! She is such a girl dog! She sits on your lap like a child and snores her head off!

Tilly (Pomeranian Mix)

Tilly is a 10 year old mixed Pomeranian. She just got a haircut. The before and after difference is unbelievable. I took her from someone that was abusing her. She loves to go bye-bye and for walks, she is really to old to run around and play rough.

I love my dog and I get the same love back from her. She is definitely attached to my hip. She is the most loyal and loving animal I have ever had. Even though she is completely blind, she is happy and makes the best of her situation. We would be lost without each other.

In Memory of Tommy (Cat)

Tommy was a 14 year old tabby cat. We found him as a kitten, by a school my husband was working in. He liked to chase twistie-ties, lay in the mint patch, have his ears scratched, and eat tuna.

Tommy went over the rainbow bridge recently. He was diagnosed in 1996 with a cat disease they said would take him in 2-3 years. He lived 10 years longer than predicted. He was a sweet boy, he was shy and timid but always friendly with his family. We miss him a lot. We are grateful we were allowed to be owned by him for so long.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Reuse Magnetic Schedules

Don't throw away those magnetic sports schedules on your refrigerator, after the season is over. They can be cut up into any size you need and used in lots of crafts. Simply hot glue the non-magnetic side to whatever you're making. I can't remember the last time I actually had to buy magnets :)

My sister taught me a lesson from the depression days: Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Good advice today as well.

Place Mouse Trap in Paper Bag

When trapping mice using the spring-type mouse traps, place in a paper bag. When the mouse is caught, pick up the bag and discard. Also, the first time you set up the trap, add bait, but don't set the trap. The next time, set the trap. This will sometimes "fake-out" the mouse, and it may be more willing to go after the bait in the set trap.

Winter Warmth Tips

I have several things I do to keep myself and my pets warm in the winter without getting heating bills through the roof!

  1. Since my home has a fairly large living area and it is wide open, I use a kerosene heater to heat just the space that we spend the most time in (living room). I make sure the ceiling fans are on low and blowing down to circulate the air. Any room that is not being occupied gets closed off.

  2. I hang a sheer curtain between the living room and the kitchen because the kitchen gets heated up when I cook. Other than cooking, I'm only in there for maybe a minute or two at a time and can stand the cold that long. I put lots of fishing weights in the bottom hem of the curtain to keep it from billowing.

  3. For my dogs, I keep an electric blanket spread out on the couch, plugged in and turned to low. I spread a blanket on top of the electric blanket and then give them an afghan to snuggle up under. I keep a smaller one on my recliner for myself with an afghan.

  4. For night time for my dogs, I put a small electric blanket on the floor under their bed cushion, turned on low. Then I give them 2 blankets to snuggle up under. I also have my own electric blanket on my bed too.

  5. I don't like taping up my windows because here in the south, even in winter, we do get a few (if far between) nice days when I can open the house up for a few hours. So I make sure my windows and doors are all insulated as best as I can. But I take down all my heavy drapes and just use sheers and blinds on the windows. That way the sun can come in and help to warm the house up too.

  6. When I do cook, when the cooking is done, I leave the oven door open so the heat permeates into the room. I also don't turn the burners off on the stove till the last minute, then allow the heat from them to permeate as they cool.

  7. In winter, I lay out as many throw rugs as I can find over as much of the hard floors as possible.

  8. While I'm in the tub or shower, I throw my pajamas or clothes (depending if I'm getting up or going to bed) into the dryer to tumble while I'm getting clean. Then I hurry up and put them on while they are still warm from the dryer. Oh! How nice that feels!

Oven Cleaner for Soap Scum

We have used Easy Off Fume Free over cleaner (for cold ovens, no heat required) to clean years of soap scum and hard water build up off showers and tubs, both fiberglass and tile. Spray it on, leave it a couple hours and then power wash off or scrub with sponge. It comes off easily and leaves bright shine.

Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt

After the meal has been eaten and the last of the leftovers stowed in the fridge, we host a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt. It helps us burn off some calories and keeps the kids occupied for 20 minutes or so. You could also do it before the meal.

We divide all the kids up into groups (an assortment of ages and talent) and provide a prepared list of items for them to find. The team that collects the most items in the shortest amount of time wins a prize (usually candy or some Thanksgiving trinket). We always try to include some easy and unusual items and allow the teams to get creative in their interpretation of the list, which make it more fun!

Here are some items we've placed on the list in years past:

Corn: cans of corn, Indian corn or a page town out of a coloring book have all been received in the past, as has a corn cob pipe!). Potato: the neighbors are used to us knocking on their doors by now, haha! Nuts, leaves (specify variety, color or number), twigs (shaped like letters of the alphabet, specific length, etc), sand (we live by the river), a photo of (you name it), we like to have the team standing by a specific "landmark", etc.(good use for the teenagers cell phones), mushroom, acorn, feather, pumpkin (again canned works!), piece of litter, things that can be found in a guy's pocket or a ladies purse (chapstick, bobbypin, receipt), coin dated 2009 or a specific state quarter, etc.

My favorite is putting a turkey on the list and having their team select grandpa to fulfill their requirement! Make it specific to your neighborhood or yard.

Everyone has a good time and it is always good for a laugh! After the winner has been determined, enjoy your pie. Be sure to take a lot of pictures! This has become a tradition for our family!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

At long last the good-humoured boss was compelled to call Fisk into his office. "It has not escaped my attention," he pointed out, "that every time there's a home game at the stadium you have to take your aunt to the doctor."

"You know, you're right, sir," exclaimed Fisk. "I didn't realize it. You don't suppose she's faking it, do you?"

Kennel Cough Home Remedies

Does anyone have a remedy for kennel cough? We can not afford to keep running to the vet. Our dog has had all his shots 3 weeks ago. After this date we took him to a kennel for a weekend, and now we have a problem. He sees to have picked up something from one of the the dogs there.

By the way he did have his shots last year as well. He has also been to the vet recently and may have been exposed to a dog that had not been inoculated.

Anyway, can someone give us a tip of some sort? Hopefully save us a vet bill. Thanks in advance for your support.

Does any one have another suggestion that could work? Since this is a protein stain, do you treat it differently?

Best Sealant for Painted Laminate Countertops

I'm a newbie here, but not a newbie to DIY. Somebody's gotta do it. I've spent 2 days reading and looking at all of your beautiful countertops and making notes. Now I'm down to trying to figure out what sealant to use, so would like to take a vote. It's the democratic way, right? I read a lot of you use the enviro-lite, but to some seems intimidating. Since this is my first time, not sure I want to be that intimidated.

Others I've read have used water-based poly, oil-based poly, Parks Super Glaze, and Varathane Diamond, so I guess what I'm trying to determine is which one.

There are so many of you that have done beautiful jobs, but used different sealers. Can we have a vote here please? I'm not "sponging". I'm using Rustoleum's stone spray stuff, if that helps. I'm using a tan undercoat layer first. One more question, does that need to be latex?

Thank you. And glad I found you guys.

Permanent Glossy Finish for Formica Countertops

I love my Formica countertops (they look like granite and need less maintenance), but am looking for a way to add a permanent glossy/shiny finish to them. I've been using the polishes that Formica recommended (such as Counter Top Magic, etc.) for quite some time, but they always have to be reapplied.

Are there any durable, and food-safe products that would work?

Thanks so much for your help.

Difficult to Get Computer Out of Sleep Mode

I have had an ongoing problem that is driving me crazy. My system appears to be running correctly and I have Norton 2009 internet security installed. My computer is set to automatically run any tests and updates.

Here's the problem. It seems that whenever there is an update (always during the night) my computer will go into sleep mode. The following morning it is often very difficult if not impossible to bring the computer back to life.

My second major problem is that sometimes the tower will not power up. This happened this morning for several hours. I reset everything; I even turned off the power at the power bar. This of course turned everything off. Nothing. The monitor and everything showed power, however, the tower refused to power up or even light up. Finally, I unplugged the tower for a couple of hours and when I did plug it in it did come on. The computer worked fine. I should not have to do this.

Any suggestions? Should I replace the cable or the tower?

Thanks.
