Silverware Cabinet Handles
By Harlean Greathouse

The knobs and handles for kitchen cabinets are so expensive unless you want to settle for plain old wooden knobs. Here is how my husband and I were able to have something a little fancier with lots less money.

Fairy Wand
By Craftbits

Here is an easy wand to make for a Halloween costume.

Fairy Wand

Materials:

  • Strong cardboard
  • Assorted Glitter or paint
  • 30cm's of dowel

Instructions:

Take your cardboard and cut out 2 identical star shapes for your wand. Take your piece of dowel and using a strong wood or craft glue, adhere your two star shapes together and place your piece of dowel in-between the two shapes. Now, paint your wand and wand handle using a spray or acrylic paint. Gold looks great and pink is very pretty.

Once dry, coat your stars using craft glue or wood glue, then sprinkle glitter onto the glue and shake off any excess.

Allow it to dry, then give it an optional coat of spray varnish to help adhere the glitter.

Tally in Her Hat

Our cat Tally wearing her hat! She really HATES it and rips it off a.s.a.p. She's a two year old tabby that someone dumped out in our neighborhood. She was extremely wild at first, but now she's the sweetest of our three cats and is a perfect lap kitty. She loves to sit in your lap and have her ears pulled on. She also loves to drink water from a dripping source, preferably the bathroom sink.

Spencer (Great Pyrenees)

This is a picture of my oldest baby. Spencer is a 5 yr. old Great Pyrenees. He weighs 135 lbs. and when on his hind legs, stands even with me (I'm 5'4"!) but he thinks he's a chihuahua. I got him about 3 yrs ago from a local shelter.

Plant Pot as a Garbage Can

We bought an oak bedroom suite. I went looking for a oak garbage can and all I could find were little cheap looking wicker or plastic colored garbage cans. So, I went to the plant pot section in Walmart and purchased a ceramic pot in similar colors to the oak suite we have. It looks great!

Rules for Food Leaving the Kitchen

I have one rule for food leaving the kitchen. It must be on a tray. For this reason, I never get spills on my carpet or furniture.

Mail Order Prescriptions

Place a written reminder on a calendar immediately after opening your mail order medicine to let you know when you need to reorder. This is great especially for mail order scripts which many of us have for our maintenance medicine. If the mail order prescription service messes up, due to their fault, and your meds will arrive late, request they ship it overnight or priority mail at their expense. Mine just did this for me, as did another one at another time. You may have to ask them do this, it is not a given.

Take Advantage of Complimentary Gift Wrapping

Take advantage of shopping at stores where you know they offer complimentary gift wrapping. This will not only save you time from having to wrap the gift at home, pretty bows are expensive, unless you can make your own. Plus, you could be finding some bargains while they're wrapping your gifts.

Removing Smells from Plastic Containers

Here's something I just learned, if you have plastic that has like an onion smell or something wad up newspaper and put it into the container and then close it up for a day and the smell will be gone. Also newspaper is the best way to clean windows and mirrors, streak free. Happy days!

Giving Gift Cards

When giving a gift certificate to a loved one living away from you, make sure the recipient will be able to use it in their area. Don't assume that the place of business is in their area, just because there is one or several of these businesses in your area. Not all businesses are in every state, check which states they're in. (I got my Dad a Memphis BBQ gift certificate, never dreaming this business wasn't a chain restaurant, fortunately, Dad brought his gift certificate with them, when they visited with us & was able to use it here, as he wasn't able to where he and Mom live.)

Cleaning Eye Glasses

An easy way to clean your glasses lint free is to use coffee filters.

An easy cleaner for your glasses is 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 water in a spray bottle.

Better Instant Pudding

For creamier better tasting instant pudding use a can of evaporated milk instead of 2 cups of regular milk. If you are cutting calories you can add fat-free evaporated milk. At my grocery store a can of evaporated milk is 50 cents.

Dog Keeps Running Away

Every time I open my door my dog bolts out and runs like there's no tomorrow! It takes me forever to catch up and I live on a busy street! She runs so fast and I'm afraid one day she'll end up getting struck by a car or I won't be able to catch up and end up losing her. Any advice?

Why do some of my asparagus come in very skinny while others nearby are very fat? Also, why do some of them become woody, no matter what their size is?

Dog Not Eating

My 2 year old chihuahua/rat terrier mix, Maxine hasn't been eating her dog food lately. She goes outside and lays there and eats grass. I know grass-eating is common but she's not acting the same. I took her to the vet yesterday and they said she just had a mild upset stomach and they said she'd start eating by the morning but she's not. Any suggestions?

Ground Cover Suggestion

Is there a ground cover that will let other flowers, such as bulb flowers like tulips or hyacinths, come up through it after it's established? I'd like to line my walk with a flowering ground cover, with some other flowers as accents. I wanted to use vinca (dark evergreen, not the variegated variety), but I've heard that it's so strong that it will smother any bulbs. Is this true, and if so, is there another ground cover that would allow this? Or will any ground cover be too thick?

Thanks!
KParke

Nipping Problem

I have a 3 year old miniature pinscher named Rocket. He has a SERIOUS nipping problem. Whenever you try to pet him he'll try to bite your hand. Whenever he's about to be picked up he gets very defensive and he'll run away or bite. I've tried classes, spraying water, verbal cues, I've tried everything. It never stops. I've tried to use a muzzle thing but he won't let me get it on him. I'm considering taking him to a dog hypnotist. I'll try anything.

Student Assistant for an Autistic Kindergartner

I have gotten a new job. I will continue working at a doctor's office but I will also now be a personal assistant to a kindergartner with autism. I am very excited but have no idea what to expect. I have been around children all my life, babysitting, teaching sunday school, youth group, etc. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to help the child and myself? All I know is he doesn't talk yet and likes to put things in his mouth. He is not potty trained yet either. Does anybody have any encouraging advice, hints, etc.?

Thank you in advance,
Sandy

Are Wolf Hybrid Dogs Safe?

Last week my kids went to the pound with a family friend. Our daughters Taylor and Brooke have been bugging us about this dog (Cooper) from the shelter. They have been asking us to adopt him.

He is 1 year old and he is a wolf-hybrid. From what I know a wolf-hybrid is an offspring of a domestic dog and a wolf. He looks like a wolf and i'm sure he acts like one also. I'm not sure if that's safe.

I mean, it's a wolf! I have 2 dogs already and they're pretty small so I don't know how that would work out. Does anyone know about the behavior of wolf hybrids and if they are a threat in any way to people or my dogs?

Thanks with love,
From Greg & Aly
