Growing Morning Glories

Morning Glories can be planted in the garden from seed but you'll have much earlier blooms if you start them indoors 5 or 6 weeks ahead of planting.

The Morning Glory loves to face East as they bloom in the mornings and fade away come the hot afternoon sun. So don't plant morning glories facing the West. Although they fade away each day new ones will be there to open up in the morning.

Morning glories readly reseed themselves and keeping them all in one place is almost impossible.

The little black seeds fall all over the place once the little 'pods' on the vines dry up and open, so plant morning glories in an area by themselves so they have free reign to do what Mother Nature intended them to do. MULTIPLY!

My Photographer's Portfolio

These are images that I am starting my portfolio with, though I am not a 100% professional photographer, I am an amateur.

I love children's photography. I think is the BEST!

Thanks a lot ThriftyFun for having out this contest and giving everyone a chance!

Have a great day!

Reduced Pain from Booster Shots

When your young child gets that next set of booster shots, be prepared with a bottle of Camphophenique. Pour some on a cotton ball and place over the inoculation site held in place with a bandaid for several hours. This will help reduce the pain that seems to linger for hours or days afterward.

I learned this from our local health department many years ago and used it just recently when my 9 year old got her booster shots.

Lengthy Sermon Joke

A pastor, known for his lengthy sermons, noticed a man get up and leave during the middle of his message. The man returned just before the conclusion of the service. Afterwards the pastor asked the man where he had gone.

"I went to get a haircut," was the reply.

"But," said the pastor, "why didn't you do that before the service?"

"Because," the gentleman said, "I didn't need one then."

Keeping Toothbrushes Clean

I soak my toothbrushes in a small cup of Listerine every so often. I soak the bristles just enough so that they are moistened. Toothbrush bristles are a breeding ground for germs so this is a great way to keep them at bay!

Uses for Paper Towel Rolls

Tips for reusing empty paper towel rolls. Post your ideas.

They can be used to store or hold electrical cords to keep them from getting tangled. I also like to use them to confuse people at Christmas. I put small gifts in a paper towel or toilet paper roll, then wrap it. The recipient can't guess what it is by the shape. It may be necessary to slit the roll from end to end to fit it around an item then tape it together.

Jar Lids as Toys

A great "toy" for a toddler: Save all your plastic jar lids (from mayonnaise, peanut butter, etc.) Save different colors and sizes, the more the better. I did this for my kids and grandkids. They can be used as: Building blocks, to identify colors, to count how many of each color there is, as play food (make a sandwich by putting a larger one between two slightly smaller ones, etc.) Just be sure that you don't use any that are small enough for child to put in their mouth and swallow.

Cold Tea for Plants

Gardening tip - keep a small spray bottle handy filled with brewed tea (no sugar or milk). Use this to water your seedlings. It works like a charm. The baby plants love the tannic acid in the tea. It makes them strong and healthy too!

Tips Jar Gift for a Hairdresser - "Moving Out On Your Own" Gift

A friend of ours is graduating high school in a few weeks and informed us that she is moving out of state as she was accepted to one of the top hairstylist schools in the United States. She also informed us that she may have to live on her own for the first time.

I love giving away greeting cards, so I bought her one of those greeting card organizer books and filled it with blank greeting cards I already had on hand and placed them in the appropriate slots. I wanted to do more, but was short on funds, so I took a decorative jar I had bought for a craft project and never used and found some cute scrapbook stickers with nail polish, shoes, purses, lipsticks, etc. (I couldn't find hairstylist type stickers) and stuck those all over the jar. Then I am typing helpful hints and printing them on colorful paper, cutting each hint out, then folding the paper to place in the jar.

I took a cardstock gift tag and tied it around the top of the jar with raffia ribbon and it simply says, "TIPS". She can use it for her tips jar once she is cutting hair on her own, but in the meantime it is full of household tips, first time on your own type tips, etc.

A Recipe Box - "Moving Out On Your Own" Gift

Another "moving out on your own" gift I did recently for a friend was to make a recipe box.

I bought a nice wooden recipe box and placed one unopened package of blank recipe cards inside.

Additionally, I added recipes that I had set aside in a folder for just such an occasion.

As I go through magazines, I pull out all of the recipes. Those I want to try, I set aside in a folder. If I like the recipe, I copy it to a recipe card and place the cut-out version in another folder I label, "recipes to share", along with other recipes I had cut out of magazines that I chose not to try for myself, but thought someone else may want to try.

This saves having to write a ton of recipes out and the person you are giving the gift to can make his/her own choice as to which ones they would like to keep and which ones they can pass on to share.

Keeping Track of Plant Information

When I buy plants, I like to keep the tag that has the plant description and care information. I bought a small photo album, and when I buy a new plant, I slip the information tag into the photo sleeve. Everything is all in one place, and it's easy to look through.

Simple Bleach Recipes - Instead of Buying Bleach Cleaners

After buying bleach cleaners at the dollar store and still feeling I was spending too much I went to the Clorox web site and found this. It is much cheaper too : )

Basic Bleach Solution

3/4 cup Ultra Clorox Regular Bleach
1 gallon water

Wash, wipe, or rinse items/area with water, then apply solution.
Let stand 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and air dry.

I put it in an old bleach cleaner bottle. If you don't have an old bleach cleaner bottle just make sure it's marked boldly saying "Bleach cleaner". Saves tons money. I love the "bleach cleaned smell."

Traveling with Allergies

Tips for traveling with allergies. Post your ideas.

When traveling and you have allergies, take your own pillow case. I went to visit friends in Florida this weekend and they have cats. I took my own pillow case because the cats are allowed all over the house. I kept my door shut and didn't touch the cats. I did pretty good.

Cleaning the Bathtub

Tips for cleaning the tub, tiles around the tub and bathtub enclosures. Post your ideas.

Tough Tub and Tile Stains

For bad tub and tile stains use cheap oven cleaner, spray on, and let it sit for 1 hour. Then go it and use sponge and wipe clean. Next take a mixture of vinegar and water and spray the tub and tiles down. This works to block further build up. You can also spray the vinegar and water on tub and tiles weekly for better results.

By Alyssa

Editor's Note: I would definitely try this on a small part of the tub before applying to a large area to make sure it doesn't discolor the tub. Also, try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser first. I have found that a lot of stains that used to require drastic measures can be removed with elbow grease and a magic eraser. Also, oven cleaner is quite nasty, so be sure to wear gloves and ventilate the bathroom as much as possible.

Homemade Flea Trap

This will eliminate all of your fleas in the home. You need eight or nine small white bowls, very small. Put water in them and put them all over throughout your house. They need to be at least small enough for the fleas to jump into. Over time they will all go to the bowls and drown. My mom told me this and I didn't believe her, but it worked.

Favorite Magazines

What are your favorite magazines? Post your ideas.

Real Simple

I normally don't buy magazines, they are just too expensive. But one I can't live without is Real Simple.

If you purchased this magazine and used the tips in it you can save yourself money. It has tips on using items in your kitchen to do your cleaning, how to organize and so many great tips.

It is the only magazine that I have ever read front to back.

Just Moved - Birthday Ideas For a Lonely Boy

My husband just got home from a year overseas and a week later they moved us to a new state. My son turns 7 on the 18th but has no friends here at our new base to invite. He's really depressed and his Dad and I want to plan a really fun day to show him that it's family that counts most. Any ideas to cheer my lonely little guy up? Like games, activities or anything really. Thanks a lot in advance for taking the time.

Paint Stain on Light Colored Carpet

I have a brand new Berber carpet, it's off-white. I knocked over a can of lime green paint and got it all up. I steam cleaned the carpet but there is still a slight greenish tint. I scrub brushed it, tried to bleach a spot, all to no avail. Can anyone help. I just bought the carpet and I am very annoyed at myself. Thanks.

Moving Into an Apartment With a Friend - Tips and Advice

ON July 16th (bound to be the hottest day of the year) I'm moving into an apartment with my best friend. I'm 18, she's 19. We've known each other for years, and I'm excited. I have began to clean and get rid of things in my room at my parents house already... but because you are much wiser than me (and have moved before). I would like some tips on moving, and leaving home! (We're living in an apartment.. so any tips for that would be good too.)

Thanks!

How Do You Take Cuttings From Plants?

I was wondering what kind of plants or trees can be multiplied by the cutting method. I remember my mom collecting cuttings from everywhere and she would "root" them. What do you do with the cuttings and how long does this take? I think that she stuck the twig or leaf in a small pot of wet soil. That is about all that I am sure of.

Do you need the rooting compound? How long do they need to stay in the soil before they have roots? Should you use potting soil or plain old dirt? Do I need to put them under something to keep the humidity in or would that make them rot?

It rained in my car - How can I prevent mildew and mold?

I accidentally left the sun roof open on my two-month old car over night and, Murphy's Law, we got hit with a major storm. My interior was drenched! The car is still operating okay and i've been letting it sit in a underground garage with windows and sun roof open so it can air out. The seats are cloth. They don't feel very wet but I'm sure the water has soaked into the core and is festering there. Is there anything else I can do to prevent mold/mildew from setting in?
