The amount of ethyl alcohol contained by volume in wine and liquor. Its presence is measured in percent by volume or "proof." When consuming wine, the amount of alcohol affects the character of the wine and must be clearly stated on the label as required by law.

Here are common alcohol percentages for beer, liquor and win.

Beer: 4% alcohol

Liquor: 40% alcohol or 80 proof

Wine: 12% to 14%

Note: Many liquors, wines and beers can have an alcohol content that is less or more than the percentages above.
