This is a tip that was passed along to me when I was telling my friend that I was going to make a call for directory assistance. My phone company charges hefty fees for directory assistance. When you need to use the 411/information option, simply dial 1-800-Free-411 or 1-800-373-3411 without incurring a charge. It's supposed to work on land lines and cell phones, too. I have used it on my land phone, but have not used it on my cell phone. You do have to listen to a short advertisement before being given the option for telephone directory assistance.

Merry Christmas to everyone at ThriftyFun and to all who read the tips letter.

Editor's Note: Google has also create a Free 411 option and it doesn't currently have ads (I would image they'll add them at some point). The number for Google's 411 is: 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411)

It's always better to talk to a live operator than a machine...it makes us more human. This is the edge of 1-800-411-SAVE among other 411 services of course the other one is that it's for FREE!

Free directory assistance is great and it helps me save a lot, but my favorite is 1-800-411-SAVE because they have live operators. It's way better than talking to a machine and I get connected to the number I need. http://www.1800411save.com/

Another possibility VOIP. Our cell phones don't work at home and we make a number of long distance calls as we have relatives out of state. In addition I travel the world for my job. We had land-line phone bills that ran $700.00/yr. I checked into VOIP and it has saved us more than $400 per year. I singed up for VOIPyourlife.come, in comparison, Vonage is a close second.

This service allows me to use my own phone lines in the house for wireless phone system, I can call all over the US for no extra fee, I can call 31 countries including Canada no extra fee. We have 411 service no extra fee, any fee countries are so cheap, 80min call to Botswana, $8.00. We pay a flat rate of $34.00/month. You can pay month by month or 2yrs in advance.

I can also use my home phone while sitting in Africa to make calls if I want to talk to my cousin in Oklahoma or Massachusetts for free. I use a piece of free software on my laptop and it's as if I'm sitting at home. Anywhere I have my laptop I have my home phone with me! Please feel free to e-mail me for any details such as how to set this up. You must have a computer connected on-line to the internet to use this.

The internet is vital at our house for business and personal finance. watch out for bundle packages, they come with a hefty bill after their initial special, separate your VOIP from your cable and internet service.
Also, look for items to create you own home security, I set up our security inside and out for a total of $400.00, this will easily be made-up via a reduction in our home owners insurance.

Don't go with commercial systems that advertise on your lawn, this tell the professional thief what kind of system you have and they know how to break them all, they are over priced and dependent upon your police department which in our case is useless.
