Craft: Aluminum Ant Friend

Halloween Candy recycling! Save your M and M tubes to make recycled art. My son won a contest at the library for his aluminum ant friend he created. We used silver spray paint and some pipe cleaners and paper clips for wings. These tubes have many uses. My son carries one in his lunch box to hold his change for milk etc. They are great for beads too. You can always refill them with M and Ms!

Dregan's First Pumpkin

This is the jack-o-lantern that I carved for my 8 month old son. It is a real pumpkin and was hand carved using only wood carving tools and a rotary tool. My family and I carved an additional 4 pumpkins the same way, each to reflect on the persons interests.

Aiden and Avery's Pumpkins

Here are two pumpkins carved by Aiden (7) and Avery (4). Aiden carved a killer robot and Avery carved a rabid mouse. We used stencils that we purchased for $3 at Fred Meyer and it made it super easy to carve something neat. Next year we will try to make our own stencils!

Happy Halloween!

Belle (Doxie)

Belle is 4 years old and a Doxie. We got her at 6 weeks old from a breeder.

She loves to dress up and go for long walks!

My baby Belle made it through Parvo! We took her into the vet only to find out it was going to cost over $2000 to keep her from dieing. And they only gave her a 50% chance of surviving that at the animal hospital. We asked if we can do the same thing at home and they said yes, but her chances of surviving are only 20%. With lots of prayer and hard work, she survived. We are so happy to have our baby!

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Make Halloween Pumpkins Into Thanksgiving Turkeys

Re-use your Halloween pumpkins for Thanksgiving by turning them into turkeys for just a few dollars. You'll need dowel rods, glue and felt. Cut felt into feather shapes, two for each dowel. Glue like a sandwich, with the felt as the bread and the end of the dowel as the filling. Do as many feathers as you want, but five or six is sufficient. Use different colors. You can either make the turkey head from felt and markers, or paint a face on the front of the pumpkin. Then poke the rods into the pumpkin, which is the turkey's body.

Discouraging Mailbox Vandalism

Our neighborhood has vandals smashing our mailboxes. A friend shared an idea on how to not need to buy a new mailbox each time it is smashed, by reinforcing it. Purchase a large metal mailbox, and a smaller size that can fit inside of the larger mailbox. Place the small one inside the larger and surround the smaller mailbox with cement. You can pour it in and let it dry. The next time the vandals come, they'll be in for a surprise! It worked!

Saving Halloween Candy

Save any non-chocolate Halloween candy left over from your hand-outs or collected from what your children have received and will not eat. Place it into a self-seal plastic bag and put it in the freezer to save for next year. I have done this for the past few years and when the season rolls around each October, I'm all set. I've never had to purchase another bag of candy.

Craft: Bubble Prints

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • food coloring
  • 1/4 cup liquid detergent
  • 1/4 cup liquid starch
  • straws
  • white paper

Instruction:

In a 6 - 8 inch bowl, mix together water, drops of food coloring, liquid detergent and starch. Using a straw, blow bubbles into the mixture until the bubbles form a structure above the rim of the bowl. Make a print by laying a sheet of white paper across the bowl rim, allowing the bubbles to pop against the paper. If the bubbles pop too quickly, add a few tablespoons of sugar to the water. This paper would be nice for stationary or envelopes.

Use Battery Toothbrush for Water Stain on Leather

I got a large water stain on a leather top desk. I read the tip on using toothpaste, only I used an old battery toothbrush to work it in. It worked great and I finished with pledge. I also use the same toothbrushes to clean around faucets and sink edges, they are great for cleaning.

Post-Mortem: A Halloween Game

This is so cool

Have guests seated in a circle so that things can be passed from one to the other easily. Have the room as dark as possible, and the person who reads the story can use a flashlight only while he is reading.

Here is the story:

The truth it is,and not a myth
That once there lived a man named Smith,

And it became his mournful lot to
be murdered quite near this spot.

We now will pass his remains,
You first will handle poor Smith's brains.
(Pass moist sponges)

Smith's vision once was keen and wise
You'll know it when you touch his eyes.
(Pass skinned grapes. )

The head, once crowned with locks so fair
is low- now here comes Smith's soft hair.
(Pass a piece of fur)

Sweet music Smith once loved to hear,
it fell upon this gentle ear.
(Pass dried peach or apricot)

When Smith would smile at boys and girls,
His teeth would gleam like whitest pearls.
(Pass kernels of dried corn)

And now the next you'll scarce hold true
We pass his windpipe out to you.
(Pass a cold boiled Manicotti shell)

The next you soon will understand
is simply poor Smith's cold right hand.
(Pass rubber glove stuffed with wet sand.)

His vertebrae once needed much,
You now shall have within your touch.
(Pass empty spools strung on string)

Now hearken while midst dreadful groans
You hear the clank of poor Smith's bones.
(Clank chains and moan and groan, gradually dying away)

Save Money and Time With A Pressure Cooker

I know this may sound like an extravagant spending item, but I have saved a lot of money in the long run with a stainless steel pressure cooker. Why? I can cook up to 1/4 the time it would conventionally. I find I save water, too. Just don't put more food or liquid than the recommended amount.

REAL pearl barley that takes up to an hour to cook, takes only 20 minutes. Just add 1/2 cup more water than the barley.

Rice is a cinch; SAME AMOUNTS of water and rice. If You have two cups of rice, you cook for only 2 minutes( and etc.) after the pressure gauge begins to jiggle or signals it is reaching the pressure point of cooking. There is no over boil to deal with either!

Pinto beans that may take up to 4 hours to boil tender or done in 30 minutes!

Even tough meat can be tenderized in a pressure cooker. I just marinade it and the flavor gets soaked in record time. I don't soak it, just put it in, and begin cooking! Depending on the amount and the way it is cut, it will take from 15-30 minutes.

I have seen STAINLESS STEEL pressure cookers starting as low as $30. It will definitely be worth the cost even if it costs $70 initially. Aluminum burns easily and has been thought to be a probable cause of alzheimer's disease.

So what do you do if there are burns on the bottom? I put the pressure lid back on the pan and let it set. That alone usually loosens the burns.

Save On Food Storage With Produce Bags

You know when you go grocery shopping and you take too many produce bags? Instead of leaving them in the cart when you are done, take them home with you. You can use them to store open packages of luncheon meat, to cover hard cheeses etc. instead of ziplock bags and all for free! You can also reuse the produce bags that you put your fruit and veggies in to collect and toss veggie peels and refuse. When shopping, they don't just have to be used for produce either. You can use them to handle and bag meat to ensure that the juices don't contaminate your hands or other groceries.

By Tori from Oshawa, Ontario

Editor's Note: I have a friend who liked produce bags so much for things around the house, that she talked to the manager of her local grocery store and purchased a whole roll of them. They lasted a long time and were reasonably inexpensive.

Using Creamer as a Substitute for Milk

I use creamer in my coffee. One night I was making a box of mac and cheese when after getting the noodles done that I realized that I was out of milk - I got out the coffee creamer and read that you could make a liquid creamer out of the powder. So I stuck a small cup of water in the microwave and heated it up add the creamer, mixed and put it in the mac and cheese it was better than with milk because it was creamery. I now use coffee creamer in a lot of my cooking. It makes things a lot better than plain milk.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A preacher of the old school was describing the events of Judgment Day and, of course, he used Biblical phraseology whenever he could.

"Oh, my friends," he intoned, "imagine the suffering of the sinners as they find themselves cast into the outer darkness, removed from the presence of the Lord and given to eternal flames. My friends, at such a time there will be weeping, wailing and a great gnashing of teeth!"

At this point, one of the elders of the congregation inter- rupted to say, "But Reverend, what if one of those hopeless sinners has no teeth?"

The preacher crashed his fist on the pulpit, "My friends, the Lord is not put out by details. Rest assured...teeth will be provided!"

Keeping a Jacket Hood On

I just bought a jacket with a hood. The hood is just about right but has no closure to keep it in place in the wind and rain. It doesn't have any extra material either. Just fits. Any ideas of how to keep this closed?

I tried 2 little squares of Velcro but it makes the hood too tight. I am not talented enough to add material and shoe lace has no place to go. There is fur around the hood. There is fullness at the top but nothing extra where the hood meets.

Cat Has Lost It's Appetite

My indoor-outdoor 3 year old cat is usually always hungry, but yesterday he lost his usual huge appetite. He has still been pretty much his normal, spunky, kitten-like self and still loves to run and play, but is a tiny bit sluggish. Yesterday he wouldn't eat his morning meal, but by evening we fed him his favorite of canned salmon cat food and he did eat it. But it's strange that he doesn't even want his treats which isn't like him. Could loosing his appetite be caused by worms? I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow.

"Drummers Hand" Intense Lotion

While coming back from vacation in NC last week we stopped at a small country store around Pickens, SC. My wife picked up a jar of hand lotion marked "Drummers Hand" Intense Lotion for Extreme Dry Skin. My wife says it is the best she has ever used but we cannot locate the store to call them (can't remember the name nor exact location). She did remember the lady in the store told her a lady in Asheville NC made it but the jar had no contact information. It did list the ingredients.

I have searched the internet for "Drummers Hand" and homemade hand lotion and found hundreds of homemade lotions, but none with the name or listed ingredients of (in order listed) Shea Butter, Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, Mineral Oil, Hydrocortisone 1% Gua Gum, Calcium Sulfate and Aloe Vera Gel.

Has anybody heard of this lotion? Does anyone have a recipe using the above ingredients? Thanks.

Small Gift Cards Can Equal Big Smiles
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

I've learned to limit my new year's resolutions. Too many is daunting, and it's too much like work. This year one of my two resolutions is to give better gifts. In an evaluation of my gift giving this holiday season, I came to the conclusion that gift cards will make up the bulk of my gifts next year. It's what works best in our family, and everyone seems to appreciate them. However, they do have some problems.
