I usually use fresh coke but I have used some that has gone flat and it seems to work as well. Just put the coke in a small dish or lid. They love the sweetness and will die fairly close to where you have the coke. It won't hurt indoor pets unless they eat the rodent (that probably won't hurt them either and is just disgusting).
