Don't you just hate when you buy fruit and two days later you have those annoying little fruit fly gnats buzzing around your kitchen? I tried washing my fruit as soon as I got it home from the store and even that didn't stop them from showing up. But I found a cost-free, non-pesticide solution that eliminate them every single time. Take a small empty bottle from bottled water or soda. Remove the cap and throw it away. Cut the top off around the part where the bottle becomes wider at the top. Drop some chunks of fruit or leftover banana peel down in the bottle. I also add a little water. Now invert the cut off part and staple into place. Place these in inconspicuous locations around the problem area and the gnats will be out of your hair usually in about 24 hours. They are attracted to the fruit and after they fly into the bottle, they can't get back out.

I was afraid the fruit in the bottles might create a bad smell but I have not been able to detect one.

No more annoying fruit fly gnats!

This makes no sense to me at all. How on earth does removing the cut off part and stapling it back
inverted make the hole different? They can still fly out of it. Please explain how they are "trapped."

Tip: Catching Fruit Flies

Fruit flies can be caught or trapped in an old jar with 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar and 2 drops of dish detergent mixed. They are attracted to this and you can throw them out.
