Identifying Silver Jewelry

I tried to sell some silver jewelry that was rejected by the "dealer". They did not stick to my magnet and were tarnished, so I thought they would be eligible. What is wrong with this theory?

It is probably on silver plated.

True sterling silver jewelry will be marked either "Sterling" or "925".
