Material for Pot Holders

What kind of material will protect hands when picking up a hot skillet? I want to make pot holders that slip onto the handle of the skillet or pot.

Cute Painted Kitty

Paint a cute little kitty to sit on your shelf. I bought this kitty from a yard sale. So she only cost me a quarter. You can buy paint in the small pots at Wal-Mart for under $4 and can mix until you have the right colors.

Sophie (Corgi Mix?)

Sophie is approx. 3 1/2 years old. Her breed is a fun guessing game, but we're not sure...the most popular guess is a corgi mix.

We knew we wanted to adopt a dog, and it took one trip to the Humane Society to find our family's baby girl, Sophie. She was a puppy when we met her, and you couldn't imagine a more eager-to-please little pup. One big kiss, and our hearts were sold!

THE SQUIRREL. There is a squirrel that lives in the backyard. The fence is his highway, and everyday around high-noon you can see him running along the fence with a big plum in his mouth. This is Sophie's idea of fun!

She's just an awesome dog! There really isn't anything more I can say about her. Sophie loves her people and her people love her!

Hummingbird Clearwing Moth

This is a Hummingbird Clearwing. At first I thought it was a bee of some sort and I took photos of it and researched it. It is in the moth family. Pretty neat.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Get Formula Samples Before The Baby Comes

When pregnant (or expecting to adopt), subscribe to as many formula companies as possible. These companies send out samples hoping to bank on your purchase of their product later.

If you breastfeed, they are good to keep around for emergencies. If the baby is always on formula, they are great for a weekend get-away. The 8 oz cans last about two days of travel and a 12 oz can lasts about three days! They containers are still sealed when you leave the house, so you can even pack them in your luggage or carry on when flying.

I have taken two cans on longer trips: one to get us there and one to get us home. Then I just buy a larger container when I get to our destination.

Wrapping Paper for Less

My tip is for wrapping paper. When wrapping a child's gift, use the Sunday comics. When wrapping a gift for the grandparents take a brown grocery sack and cut it open. Then let your child be creative on the side that has no store markings. Then use to wrap the gift.

Replace Mayo With Bleu Cheese Dressing

For something a little different, try putting a good, rich Bleu cheese salad dressing on rye or whole grain bread when you make patty melts. Just use in place of mayo or ketchup. U*u*U

Buy Second Hand Appliances

You can save a lot of money by purchasing second hand appliances from used appliance stores. My DH and I purchased a stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer at a fraction of the price of what they would cost brand new.

One day we went appliance shopping and learned that the older model appliances were made better than the new ones coming off the assembly lines. We've been very fortunate because our four appliances have not needed any service repairs.

By Marge W. from Sanborn, NY

Editor's Note: Older appliances may be built better but may also be less energy efficient. Find out the energy rating of any appliance before you buy.

Keep Your Kids Laughing

The best back to school tip from a mom of three,(my kids are 7, 4, and 7 month old) is to try to make your family life fun by telling jokes at dinner, making learning fun by rewarding with tickling awards! Everyday I return home from a long day at work and it just makes me happy to see my family happy! This is the best stress reliever!

Roll Bacon Before Opening

Before opening a package of bacon, roll it into a long tube to loose the slices and keep them from sticking together.

Foot Bath to Relax and Cool Off

Treat yourself to a soothing relaxing foot bath. Through the hot spells here in California, I pour 1/2 cup of vinegar (white or apple cider) in a tin pan big enough to put my feet in. I use cool water and soak for sometimes a half hour. I use a wash cloth to squeeze water on my legs as well. It relaxes my legs and feet and cools me down. I do this before bedtime . And it does not leave a vinegar smell .

Keeping a Rabbit Off Furniture

I know someone who has indoor cats, dogs and a rabbit. I would like to know if anything can be used to keep the rabbit OFF the furniture. It is not shy, will hop onto furniture whether occupied or not and most likely wets and leaves droppings. Any suggestions of what would repel the creature?

Thanks,

Burning Paraffin in a Hurricane Lantern

Can liquid paraffin mixed with essential oil be burned in a traditional hurricane lantern? We currently use citronella oil in these lanterns, so, would it be the same (safety-wise) for the homemade recipe?

Black Mould in Our Bathroom

Our bathroom is growing nasty black mould and I'm not sure what to do. There is hardly any ventilation only a small window at shoulder height which we open as much as we can. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it? If anyone can offer any advice - even about a good way to get rid of this yucky mess I'd be so grateful. Many thanks in advance.

Song Dance Theme Ideas

My school has a winter formal each year, but no one goes with dates, it's more of everyone dancing and having a great time. I was wondering if anyone had ideas for a theme? I've found that a lot of themes are too romantic to fit the dance. I was thinking more of using a song for a theme, like one that people get pumped about when they hear it and want to start dancing, but I can't think of a song. Or, a fun theme like "Roaring 20s". Any ideas of a non-romantic, but still fun theme? I'm open to any suggestions!

Thanks!

Cleaning a Fiberglass Tub

We have a fiberglass shower and bathtub installed in our home. The bathtub's still in very good condition. It looks dull because of the soap buildup. I have tried cleaning it with Bon Ami, polishing cleanser which is recommended for fiberglass. And I have tried using Simply Green liquid cleaner. No matter how hard I scrub, I can't remove the dull soap scum.

What product can I buy to remove the soap so it at least looks clean and somewhat new?

I will thank you for your suggestions.
