http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

We have a short version of the newsletter today. We didn't have time to put together tips but wanted to send out the most recent requests and a couple Photo Contest Entries anyway. We also have a new article by Harlean Greathouse about Pantry Pests in the More Reading section. It was published in yesterday's TF News.

We currently have 46 requests on the Lonely Requests page, if you get a chance, look them over and see if you have any advice to offer.

Lonely Requests http://www.thriftyfun.com/board_lonely.html Thanks for reading,

Susan

Treasure Chest Birthday Cake

This was a huge hit at my son's Luau party. And it was super easy to make. You will need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 box cake mix (yellow)
  • 1 jar chocolate frosting
  • 1 fork
  • 1 bag of M&M's
  • fake candy coins / jewelry
  • 1 Loaf pan
  • 1 wire rack (optional but really helps)
  • 1 bread knife

Directions:

Spray bottom of loaf pan with nonstick spray. Bake cake as directed on package for loaf (usually 50-60 minues). Let cake sit 10 minutes in pan, then remove and let it cool fully on wire rack.

When cake is cool. slice it with bread knife 1/3 of the way down from the top. Then cut this piece to a 45 degree angle on the front side. Keep remaining cake set aside you WILL need it later.

Frost entire cake with frosting. Place fake coins / jewelry on top of bottom cake piece. Lay the top piece over as "chest lid".

Decorate outside of chest with M&m's or other candy of your choosing to give it the look of straps holding it together. Use fork tines by dragging across frosting to give a wood grain look. Crumble set aside cake piece along bottom of chest as the sand it was buried in. Give to children and stand back.

New Requests:

Cigarette Burns on Vinyl "Rolled" Tile

I have about a dozen cigarette burn discoloration/indentions on the "rolled tile". I have no prototypes of the tile to take for matching color. Is there any type of medium that I could find which would cover and fill the slight indention? Help. We live in a rental house.

Please reply with any ideas.

Star Wars Party Ideas

I am going to have a party for the premiere of Star Wars and then plan to go see the movie late at night. Does anyone have any cool party decorating ideas for a Star Wars theme? Also, does anyone have any simple costume ideas for going to see the movie? I thought it might be cool if I handed out some simple costumes as party favors for people to wear to the movie. Food ideas? Any advice would be a appreciated.

Use the force!

Homemade Version of Top Job Cleaner

Hey does anyone remember the cleaning stuff called Top Job? They've stopped selling it and I think it was about the best stuff since slice bread. I don't really care for any of the new stuff they have on the market now adays. My question, does anyone have any idea of how to maybe make a home version of Tob Job?

Pam

Identifying and Eliminating Pantry Pests
By Harlean Greathouse

Pantry pests are one of the biggest problems in the home. There are dozens of pests, and to cover them all would take a very large book, but I will try to include the most common ones here. They actually fall into about 3 groups ---- the Cockroach, Beetles, and Weevils.
