Daily Thrifty Tips - April 11, 2008

Vol. 7, Num. 72, April 11, 2008 (Read It Online)

Just a quick reminder to pet owners, especially dog owners, make sure to keep gorilla glue away from your pets. Dogs seem to like the taste of it and it expands in their stomach which requires quick and expensive medical attention. We had another post in the thread last night. You can read more about the potential harm in the More Reading section.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Converting Aquarium into Terrarium

Here's a photo of my completed terrarium. The miniature violets cost about $4 to $5 each. I found the shefflera and a cute small palm at Walmart for $3 each. The small juniper was pricy, about $15. The ground cover is something called Irish moss that was on sale at a discount store after St. Patrick's Day. The rocks and gravel are from my yard.

Of course, all this does add up, I probably spent about $75 total. But now I have a large and attractive focal point in my home office. The activated charcoal which was recommended to go over the gravel in the bottom was a major expense. I used a type for aquarium filters and possibly could have found a cheaper source.

Drink Lemon Water Before and After A Massage

A good pal told me today she went for a massage recently and masseuse told her to drink the juice of a fresh lemon mixed with an equal amount of water before a massage or exercise AND afterwards to cut down on the pain she would experience later. I'd never heard of this before, so this might be news to you, too.

Step By Step Spring Cleaning

"Spring Cleaning" conjures up a mental picture of a warm, sunny day spent airing out bedrooms, washing windows, and thoroughly vacuuming carpets. It signals the passing of winter gray outside and the freshness of a spring transformation inside your heart and home.

Follow these steps and you will have that freshly cleaned look that spring cleaning implies.

  1. Vacuum the whole house and let some fresh breezes air it out. The whole house will begin to take shape and look fresher. Dust BEFORE you vacuum to make sure a room is really clean (allow 45 minutes). I ALWAYS dust after I vacuum as well to pick up what the vacuum stirred up!
  2. Clean your closet by putting away winter clothes and bringing out spring attire. Wash, iron, and mend clothing before it gets put away. Giveaway clothes you didn't wear and don't like (allow 90 minutes). I have a hard time giving perfectly good items away so I try to consign or give to a charity. Get rid of items you have not worn in one year OR that do not fit. I never am able to lose that 5 lbs!
  3. Wash your bedding and change your blankets for spring weather. Put away wool blankets and bring out spring comforters (60 minutes). I also use this time to refold any items in the line closet and relegate worn towels to the rag bag. More room in the closet!
  4. Put away winter coats, boots, and mittens, cleaning as you go through the front and back closets to your house (20 minutes). Match up those mates before storing away. Now is a great time to make a list of what items you'll need for next year
  5. Wash the windows to clear out winter gray that blocks your view. No more winter smudges to peer through (Average 8 minutes per window). I always clean both the inside and out as well as any blinds or window treatments
  6. Recycle newspapers, catalogs and newspapers that may have accumulated over the winter (15 minutes). I have to do this on a weekly basis!
  7. Clean out the refrigerator and have your first cookout of the season. A social event outdoors like a cookout or picnic marks the official beginning of spring in your life. (90 social minutes)
  8. Clean out the pantry and discard any out of date itemsor that jar of anchovy paste you are never going to use. Donate unexpired items to your local food pantry. I am even going to line with new shelf paper this spring!
Eventually:

Sweep out the garage and wash the cars. Vacuum, wax, and change the oil in your car to get ready for spring and summer trips.

Clean out the basement, donate or throw away items that are taking up space. Have a yard sale!

RELAX and enjoy the feeling of a clean house. Celebrate with a bubble bath, some aromatherapy candles and a glass of wine. Treat yourself to a nice dinner OUT!

* Bonus Tip: Clean out your garage from the center to the walls. Then place items by sections: game, craft, sports equipment, and gardening tool. Visualize garage sale income and beautiful, uncluttered space in these rooms as you proceed.

Hard Lesson - What Cats and Dogs Can Swallow

Today I learned a hard lesson: Pets are like toddlers, they eat small items that they can choke on, or worse get lodged in their intestines. Today my cat almost died. He had to have surgery that has so far cost over $800. He swallowed a tiny piece of metal that got stuck in between his large and small bowels. The Vet said it looks like the metal they took out of him was the wire off of the end of a plastic wrapper from sausage or pepperoni. I'm sure he got it from our irresponsible neighbors garbage burn pile when we let him out to go to the bathroom. He'll be an indoor cat from now on.

I am posting this because I want to warn all those who love their pets that my Veterinary Clinic staff say they see about 1 animal per day that has swallowed something that's obstructed their bowel and needs surgery. They said that they've seen Cats that have swallowed sewing pins that have ripped their intestines all the way down. Dogs can swallow small toy footballs or Barbie accessories that block their bowels (and not all show up on X-rays) One of the worst offenders is Dental Floss. My cat won't be allowed in my craft/sewing room or outside anymore (unless I'm with him)

He made it through today's surgery and everything looks good so far. I just pray he recovers to his normal spunkie self. Symptoms for this include, vomiting, lethargy, and not eating. This can be confusing because these symptoms can be the same for a urinary blockage. Do yourselves a favor: "Pet-proof" your home like your would "Baby-proof" for a Baby. After all, are pets ARE our babies anyway! Also, think about getting medical insurance for your pet. You never think it'll happen to you!

Make a T-Shirt Tote Bag

Lay the t-shirt flat, starting at one side of the neckline and ending up at the other side of the neckline, cut a deep 8 inch U SHAPE.

Next, cut off the sleeves.

Lastly, sew a seam across the bottom of t-shirt ( reinforce the seam and corners by sewing it a second time) and Voila! instant tote bag. These are super fun and easy to make. I use them for grocery shopping, etc.

Saving Money for Your Favorite Vacation Spot

My husband, son and I love to take a yearly weekend trip to Door County, WI. The last time we went, we were (as usual) on a tight budget. While we had fun, we got low on money a day or so before we went home, so we didn't get to go do or see some of the things we wanted to because of a lack of money. I recently did an internet search for Door County, and found the chamber of commerce type (or "official") website. On there, I saw that they have gift certificates available that can be purchased and used at a LOT of local hotels (including the one we always stay at!), stores, restaurants, etc.

So now, when we get a few extra dollars, I plan on buying some of these gift certificates each month. That way, next time we go we won't have to worry about having a lot of cash in order to eat out, shop, or do other activities. Also, this way I can "save" for our trip little by little, which will help us budget.

Another option would be to take some extra money with you on vacation and buy gift certificates or cards to favorite restaurants and stores while you're there, and save them for next time (be sure they won't expire before your next visit though!). This would only make sense, of course, if it's a location you visit on a regular basis. If you're going on a vacation soon, do a search for the location's website, and see what deals they have available. It might help take some of the stress out of saving for vacation!

Frugal Laundry Detergent

We have not used legitimate, commercially made laundry detergent in our house for over 3 years. We use a Miracle II Laundry Ball, about 1/2 Cup of vinegar and 1/2 Cup of Arm and Hammer washing soda. This combination works wonders at getting clean, fresh-smalling laundry that has not been exposed to petro-chemicals. I have multiple chemical sensitivities and skin problems and this works well for me to avoid problems there. It is also very cheap. For some reason, the vinegar does not work well on dark colors and makes them smell weird, so we don't use the vinegar on dark colored laundry.

Saving Money on Baby Wipes

When my children were young money was tight so I would buy bulk baby wipes and take a few out and put them in a baggie to have handy for quick cleanups when out and about. This saved me money in not having to buy the travel size.

I would also buy good paper towels and make my own wipes using antibacterial soap and a little baby oil to keep it soft on their skin. This worked great and cost much less.

Cleaning My George Foreman Grill

Love my George Foreman Grill. Hate the cleanup. My Mom showed me an easier way. While the grill is still hot, place a paper towel on the grill and wet the paper towel with a little white vinegar. Pour the vinegar on the top of the grill and let the vinegar run down completely covering the surface.

Put the lid down on the grill a minute or three. Open grill cover and reuse paper towels to clean up. Gook will come up much much easier.

Newspaper Ink on Wood Furniture

My dining room table has a mark on it from water spilling onto a newspaper that was on the table. The water wasn't wiped up fast enough, so there is an imprint of the newspaper on my table. Smooth Iron Sole Plate Cover

I am looking for a cover that goes on an iron to cover up the steam holes and gives a smooth surface to the iron sole plate. Where to Find Help for Aging Parents

I could use some advice as I don't know where to start. My parents are aging and live in a different state. My mother has cancer and my father is showing signs of dementia (and is extremely difficult). I'm in contact with my mother frequently, but she refuses to admit she needs help. When I go to visit them I wind up in tears on the flight home because I feel so helpless. Can anyone recommend a website or reference book to help with aging parents?

I know this is becoming an issue for many other baby boomers. I've approached the conversation about finances and their wishes, but I get yes and no answers for a variety of reasons. Their not eating well, the house is dirty, I'm not sure my mother is bathing herself.. my father forgets what he did 5 minutes ago.. and the list goes on. Anyone who has suggestions or ideas. My family would really appreciate some guidance. Thank you.
