Today's Tips
Before Leaning Ladder Against The House
Put old socks on the end top of your ladder before leaning it against the side of your house. This will help prevent scratches from the metal at top of the ladder. Some ladders have some type of built-in protection, but many older ladders don't.

Saving Chicken Breast Bones For Soup
When I fix chicken breasts and I do fix them often, I cut the meat off to use in boneless recipes. I leave a small amount of meat on the bones and freeze 6 or so of the boned out breasts in a freezer bag. When I get ready to make chicken and dumplings, or soup, I use the bones with the meat on them and cook them for this meal.
I always find that I have left enough meat on the bones for a good meal. If I really have extra breasts I occasionally freeze one unboned half breast with the others for extra meat.
Be sure to tell your family what this is, my husband fixed me a lovely meal of chicken bones, roasted, not knowing what they had been saved for. We had a great laugh and a very skimpy meal!

Substitution for Vanilla
Recipe calls for vanilla and you don't have any? I use pancake syrup or Karo syrup in place of the vanilla. Works great, tastes great!

Making Your Own Party Favors Goodie Bags Out Juice Boxes
Having a party for your child or making goodies for child's classmates? Save your snack size juice boxes, cut off the top, cover them with construction paper, decorate however you like and add a pipe cleaner for the handle. These are sturdy to fill with goodies and treats and easy for the child to carry.

Ice Tea for Traveling
When we travel, we drink iced tea. Buying bottled tea is expensive. We save our empty soda bottles and fill them with tea we make at home. Then, we just throw them in the cooler and we're ready to go, at a fraction of the cost. We also, do this with water.

Keeping Receipts for Bargains
I keep all my receipts with me in an organizer. Then if I see that something I've bought is now selling for less, I can use the receipt to ask for the price difference.

Keeping Air out of the Paint Cans
Putting a partially filled balloon into paint cans that have been partially used or emptied will keep the air out of the can and prevent the paint from forming a skin or harding in the can,

Before Buying Online, Look for Coupon Codes
Never buy anything over the internet without doing a search to see if there are any online discounts or codes available. When I first made internet purchases, I found out that I could have saved almost $100 on two purchases that I had made if I had only known to look for codes.

Stretching Fresh Milk
To make milk stretch further, I use both regular (refrigerated fresh) milk and powdered milk. My family did not like the taste of powdered milk alone, so I split a gallon of fresh milk in half (best way is to take an empty milk jug and pour from the full one until you think it is half, then set them side by side on the counter and check), and use half fresh milk and half powdered milk.
This will make one gallon of milk stretch to two gallons much cheaper. This works really good if you have several children, or a big family (I do). When I use half fresh and half powdered milk it tastes much better than just powdered milk, and your milk will go a long way.

Make Your Own "No More Tangles" Leave in Conditioning Spray
Make your own "No More Tangles" leave in conditioning spray: use a small spray bottle (old hair spray bottle is fine), and for normal hair use 1 part regular hair conditioner to 3 parts water, shake well and it is ready to use. For dry hair use 1 part regular hair conditioner to 2 parts water, shake well and it is ready to use.
Note: The small amount of conditioner that is left in the bottom of the bottle (turn bottle upside down to get it out) is usually perfect for this.
I use this (dry hair formula) on my hair and my 2 daughters' hair every day.

Alternative Uses for Hair Conditioner
Uses for hair conditioner, other than using in your hair. Post your ideas.
I happen to like the Flex hair conditioner fragrance. I was hand washing some knee highs in the bathroom, and didn't want to go get the fabric softener from the laundry area, so I used the Flex, rinsed well and have been using it every since. And for more than just the knee highs. (for many many years now)

Heating Advice For A Drafty Farm House
My elderly mother lives in the country in an old, drafty farm house and heats with a wood stove since she is on a fixed income. She is getting to the point of not being able to handle the wood. The only fuel available is electricity, which is expensive, and bottled gas and fuel oil. Since the house has no duct work, I was thinking of those motel units that go thru the wall and provide heat and a/c. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? She is very independent and the kids are broke. Thanks.

Garbage Disposal Won't Drain
My garbage disposal is stuck. When I turn it on it works fine, it grinds and everything. However, when the water is running and the disposal is not on, the water doesn't go down. I tried drain-o, and the little thing on the bottom of the disposal but it still gets stuck when it's not on.
Please help.
Thanks

Caring For A Christmas Cactus
I have this Christmas Catus a friend gave me and it doesn't look too good. I've transplanted it twice because it was growing. Then I noticed it has stopped growing and looks kinda sick.
I read somewhere that they like to be root bound. If that's so then I messed up and put it in a too big of a pot. Today I purchased a much smaller pot and transplanted it again plus I gave it one of those fert. spikes.
I was wondering how ofter do you water these plants? I really want this plant to thrive because the friend that gave it to me has passed away.
Please, any feedback will be greatly apprecitated.

Getting Rid Of Wild Onions
Does anyone know how to get rid of wild onions in lawns without having to dig them up? That's not practical. The space is about 3/4- 1 acre, riding lawnmower doesn't kill them and garden poison doesn't either. They are not fit to eat. They look like chives or bunching onions. Sure hope someone has an answer.
Thanks. Great granny Vi

Tips on Stenciling
By Rachel Webb
Stenciling a decorative pattern on walls is often considered a thrifty decorating option used by early American colonists seeking a way to add color and pattern to their humble farm-homes. Although this is true, stenciled walls were also found in eighteenth and nineteenth century homes as a way to pattern after popular European decorating styles.
