Today's Tips

Streak-Free Class Cleaner

1/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 cups warm water

Put all the ingredients into a clean spray bottle and shake to mix. Use as you would a commercial glass cleaner. Spray on glass and wipe dry with a clean cloth or newspaper.

Uses for Petroleum Jelly

Put a little petroleum jelly on the side of a candle holder before you put the candle in. The remaining candle will be easier to remove once the candle has burned.

Caring for VHS Tapes

Easy Cake Mix Cookies

Ingredients:

1 box any flavor cake mix
2 eggs
1/3 cup oil

Directions:

Mix ingredients together until smooth. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a lightly greased cooki sheet. Use the bottom of a drinking glass to flatten slightly. Bake at 375 degrees F until the tops crackle (8-10 minutes). Cool and frost if desired.

(I have added nuts, chocolate chips and sprinkles before. You can use your own imagination! Our favorite is the chocolate with pecans with chunky chocolate in them. The strawberry also makes up good with the cream cheese icing in the tub.)

I try to keep cake mix on hand so if I need to take something to someone quickly, I can always pull out this recipe and make it up in just a few minutes!

Organizing Leftover Yarn

If you have piles of left over yarn that is in knots instead of balls try this, take a empty toilet paper holder put a little split on one end, cut the yarn anywhere and attach to the holder, then wind the yarn onto the holder and it all gets nice and neat! By Kay

Use Beer in Your Hair

Can't get your man to clean up after his poker night with his buddies? What are you supposed to do with all that leftover warm, flat beer? Put it in your hair of course. If you've got fine, thin or oily hair this is a spectacular way to give it sheen and bounce. Even though you're sure your husband would love you to smell like beer and would think you found a new aphrodisiac, you like something a little more feminine? They sell fruit flavored beer or add your own essential oils. Go crazy! Throw in your homegrown chamomile or lavender. Just remember if the cops pull you over, offer to take the test and then tell them why. Oh ya, and if the cop asks - you don't know me! By Suzanne S.

Uses for WD-40

WD-40 can be a great help when cleaning house, especially in the bathroom. Keep WD-40 under the sink to:

-Cut through stubborn soap scum on fiberglass shower doors

-Prevent mildew from forming

-Stop squeaks on cabinet hinges and drawer slides

-Prevent rust and corrosion from forming on medicine cabinets

-Remove unwanted bathtub traction decals (rinse with soap and water after using WD-40)

-Drive dirt and grime from shower door tracks

Artificial Sweetener on an Ant Hill

Here in Texas (as in the rest of the South) we have a problem with ants...fire ants and regular ants. As soon as we notice an ant pile, my husband opens up a couple of packages of "Sweet and Low" and pours onto the mound. If it's a really big mound he uses more, use your judgement. The ants bring it into their nest and usually within a day all the ants are gone. Once again, if it's a really big pile it may take a couple of days. But since we were told of this trick we have been able to keep them under control. Also, this whole summer I have not had any ants in the house. I guess if you control them outside they won't be coming into the house. It really works!! By Margaret

Brown Sugar Grapefruit

Here is a wonderful recipe for those who love grapefruit. After rinsing grapefruit under running cold water cut it in half. Using a very sharp paring knife, cut through each section just enough to leave the sections intact. Spread about a 1/2 tablespoon of sugar on each half & sprinkle brown sugar on top. Broil under the broiler until lightly browned. Watch closely. I hope you adore the taste as much as my family & friends & I do. Happy eating. By joesgirl

Roasted Tomatoes

I have a fantastically easy way to use up lots of ripe tomatoes. After peeling and coring, cut up tomatoes in medium chunks and place in a large, non-reactive dutch oven (avoid tall pans like stock pots). I use an enamel coated dutch oven.

Fill the pot as full as possible with the tomatoes. Place in oven, uncovered at 250 degrees for 48 hrs. Stir tomatoes every 10 hrs or so. The top layer of tomatoes will "roast" which is why stirring is important. This roasted flavor gives the tomatoes a wonderful, earthy flavor that is perfect for soup, salsa, ketchup, barbque sauce or whatever.

Another advantage to this method is it drastically reduces the number of jars needed for canning tomatoes.

Avoid Water Moccasins by a Pond

Several years ago, we were feeding the ducks at a local pond when we noticed there were little heads sticking up eating the bread also. We assumed they were moccasin, and it turned out they were. Moccasins are venomous, and baby ones like to come to the shore often and search for food, or just watch. They are amusing but dangerous. So my tip is to watch your feet when at the pond feeding ducks. Moccasins are known to be very interested in goings on around the pond. Racer

Feedback: Creamiest Homemade Yogurt

I hope it is OK to provide a link which I have used to make the best, most fool proof yogurt I have ever made. Although it has a lot of reading material and instructions, after you do it once, all you need to remember are the temperatures. I find it is easier to follow the Centigrade temps on my candy thermometer. Basically, you incubate your yogurt in an ice chest with water surrounding the jars. The water temperature fluctuates very little and can be maintained very easily by removing a cup or so when it gets on the cool side and heating it in the microwave and returning it to the ice chest. This recipe has always worked for me, and I now have it figured out exactly which glass jars to use in a relatively small volume tall ice chest that it doesn't even involve very much water...I have two wide mouth scant half gallon tall jars and a smaller jelly jar for my "next time starter". I fill a tall narrow jar with hot water to put the starter jar on so the lid will be above water. If you visit the link you will see what I'm talking about! Of course, when the yogurt is done, I use the water for my houseplants! Check this link out:

It is an excellent presentation!

Feedback: Better Interest Rate on Credit Cards

Call the credit card company and ask for a lower interest rate. It works most of the time, tell them you are considering other credit card companies but wanted to stay with them if at all possible. What is the best rate they can give you. WATCH OUT FOR TRANSFER FEES or fees of any kind associated with any credit card company. Some too good to be true companies have strings attached.

Feedback: Less Wrinkles: Hang Dresses and Suits Quickly

Another idea to help with wrinkles is to have one of those portable closet racks (it's two big Xs with two bars on top, sorry, can't recall what the name of this thing is):

If you have a large bathroom (which unfortunately I don't), you can set up this portable closet rack in there and the steam from hot showers helps ease the wrinkles out of outfits you hang on it.

Feedback: Looking for Meatloaf Advice

Recipe from the 1950's!! My mother found it on a Pet evaporated milk label. My daddy's favorite.

Meatloaf

2 lbs. ground beef (may use some ground pork, too)
1 tall can Pet evaporated milk
2 envelopes Lipton onion soup mix

Mix well (I use clean hands) Place in loaf pans (2)

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Slices very well for sandwiches.

Today's Recipe: Hummus Dip

A delicious hummus dip recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans) or 19-ounce can (rinsed and drained)
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 cup tahini * (sesame paste)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • salt, to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

Put chickpeas, garlic, olive oil, cumin and tahini in a food processor and process. Once it starts to reach the desire texture start slowly adding the lemon juice and process until you have a nice paste for dipping. Then salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate for two hours before serving.

* Tahini is the equivalent of peanut butter but made with sesame seeds instead of peanuts. In a pinch, you can try this recipe with peanut butter, but it won't be as good.

Once you have made this a couple times you will get a good feel for how much salt, pepper and lemon juice you prefer.

Fly Repellant for Porch Area

I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to stop common houseflies from hanging around on our back porch. They seem to accumulate there every day. The porch is very clean, no food or animal waste is present to attract them. And please don't suggest one of those unsightly sticky fly ribbons. Thanks ~Harm0ny~

Make Yogurt at Home

"Yogurt is a tangy, nutritionally excellent dairy product that can be made at home. The milk used contains a higher concentration of solids than normal milk. By increasing the solids content of the milk, a firm, rather than soft, end product results. Addition of nonfat dry milk (NFDM) is the easiest at-home method for doing this."
