Today's Tips

Watch Package Dates At The Grocery Store

Look at meat package date. If the expired date is the day you're in the store, ask the manager for a discount. They usually will mark it down, otherwise, they have to throw the package away & pay for the loss.

Light Banana Bread

The best and easiest and lightest banana bread.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cup mashed bananas
  • 1/2 tsp. of vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 1/3 cups Bisquick
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1 cup sugar

Directions:

Mix altogether in one pan and put into 4 small greased loaf pans. Or two large. Cook on 350 or approx. 25 minutes for small and 40 for large.

The Best Hot Chocolate Mix

Ingredients:

  • 8 qt. box of Non fat milk
  • 2 lb. box of Nestle Quick
  • 6 oz. Jar of Cremora or Coffee Mate
  • 1/2 C. Powdered Sugar

Directions:

I used all generic stuff and it still tasted great. Make sure to blend really well. I put mine through a sifter at least three times. To pass out I put into baby bottle inserts. One cup makes three servings as 1/3 of a cup and 6 oz of milk or water make a serving. Give away with three marshmallows, two Hershey's Kisses and a candy cane in a mug and you have given away the ingredient for Snowman Soup.

Make a Mobile With a Yogurt Container

I don't throw anything away. The other night my Brownies were making mobiles. Instead of buying hangers I used the empty yogurt containers. Punched holes around the bottom and they hung stuff from it.

Removing Rust From Cast Iron

Don't use fancy chemicals to clean rust off of your old cast iron. Simply dunk in a solution of half water and half plain vinegar.

Frugal Spray For Flying Pests

Spray flying pests with a solution of 1/3 rubbing alcohol, 1/3 vinegar and 1/3 water. This is the same solution I use to clean my hard floors. Spraying flying creatures with windex or hairspray also works.

Inexpensive Facial Oil Blotters

If you have extremely oily skin as I do, it can become expensive to purchase oil blotting papers. My hairdresser gave me a great tip: The tissue paper rings used to cover public toilet seats work just as well, at a fraction of the cost! Just cut them up into postcard-size pieces and store them in a zip-loc bag. These paper rings can be purchased at any cleaning or janitorial supply store, and one purchase will give you a supply of oil blotters that will last for years!

Chopping Green Onions

Even chopping green onions can make my eyes water. So instead of using a knife, I use my kitchen scissers to chop them. Just clean the green onions as normal and snip until you have the desired amount. It's quick and no watery eyes. =)

Removing Dye That Transfered From Denim Skirt To Boots

Hi my name is Sonia from Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

I have a lovely pair of tan leather boots, unfortunately I got caught in the rain, I was wearing a long denim skirt and the skirt rubbed against my boots and the dye from the skirt has stained my boots. It looks as if the top layer of leather has rubbed away and the exposed under layer has been stained by the dye from my denim skirt. I've been told by a local shoe shop that white spirit may remove the dye but they could not gaurantee the outcome. Can anyone please give me some suggestions for removing the stain. The boots are new and I'd hate to have to throw them out.

Thanks

Sonia Bradley

Homemade Cleaner For Cleaning Shower Heads

How do you clean shower heads? Is there anything I can make at home to unclog the holes in the shower head from lime deposits. The stuff you buy in the store is so strong, the odor bothers my asthma.

Thanks,

The Treasure In "Used"
By Arleen M. Kaptur

You've spent the entire day shopping for new furniture or accents for your home and yet nothing seems quite right. You come home exhausted and in ill spirits. You grab the newspaper to check out the ads and possibly something there will light up that spark in your eyes and put that spring in your step. You sink back down into that old chair that your great Aunt Tessie gave your grandmother, who gave it to your mother, who passed it on to Sister Sue, until she got tired of it and you inherited it.
