Daily Thrifty Tips - May 30, 2005

Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Four, Number 134, May 30, 2005
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

I hope everyone is having a relaxing and meaningful Memorial Day. For folks outside the US, Memorial Day is a day of rememberance in the US for soldiers who have died. If you are curious about the history of Memorial Day in the US, the Department of Veteran Affairs has a nice article about it:

The Origins of Memorial Day http://www1.va.gov/opa/feature/celebrate/memday.htm

We don't have any tips in today's issue, just requests, photos and articles. We are working on the redesign of ThriftyFun and still have some more work to do. So far it is working well. You can see the new format online at ThriftyFun. Once it's in place, it should be quicker and easier to navigate.

If you are looking for the "Active Topics" and "Recent Feedback" links, they are now at the top of the page. The links to individual topics now run down the side of the page. More than a redesign of the look of the site, this is a redesign of the structure of the topic sites. This will make it much easier for us to create new topic sites and add categories to existing topic sites.

Our two contests end tomorrow at midnight. We are giving away two gift cards in the tip contest and Fuji Digital Camera in the Photo contest.

In other news, the HTML version of this newsletter now has jump links in the table of contents.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Transforming Your Front Porch

A plain front porch can be transformed into a place of serenity and beauty with just a few simple touches. I found an old ladder in a junk pile and leaned it into the corner by my front door. I hung a plastic bag of flowers on it and placed cheap flowers all around the porch to accent the ladder. Everyone that comes comments on the ladder! Sometimes I wrap silk ivy or fall-colored leaves around it. The possibilities are endless.

Protecting Plants From Bunnies

Any ideas how to rid yard of bunnies? I want to plant some veggies and plants but last year they ate them all? Is there anything to keep them away from plants?

Crocheted Flower Purse Pattern

Help, I need the web site for a pattern for a crocheted flower purse. It is round and has petals. It looks like a big flower. I bookmarked it but it has disappeared. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Painting Glass

I have a number of very plain large glass vases that I have kept over the years. I was thinking about throwing them out and then thought it would perhaps be neat to paint them. Any idea where I could get ideas on what to paint and what kind of paints to use?

Refrigerator Odors

I'm looking for some magical remedy to get rid of a horrendous smell that permeated our "new" refrigerator while it was in the garage, courtesy of the previous homeowners. It sort of smells like gasoline, but sort of not; I don't know how to label this smell.

I've tried vinegar, baking soda, the blue stuff in the container (odor sponge or somesuch), even a crystal that is supposed to remove "your worst smells". Well, nothing's doing it, and every time the fridge or freezer is opened, well, there it is again.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Kat

Clearing Ground with Household Chemicals

I'm looking into means of clearing of weeds, shrubs, poison Oak and Ivy, and other nuisance plants on an older property using agents that:

1) are CHEAP!!!
2) are commonly available
3) will wash out of the soil over time
4) will have a minimum impact on the local environment
5) are INSTANTLY effective.

On the boards are Vinegar, Clorine Bleach, Rock Salt, and lye (drain cleaner)

Now, some of these are hazardous to mix together. Salt and Chlorine will produce clorine gas, which is extremely toxic for example.

Some may have a longer lasting effect than I necessarily want - I don't know how long it might take for "Salted Ground" to recover.

There are some trees involved in part of the area, but they are unwanted trees and the fall lines are of no great concern if they die. We have 'Thorn' trees in this region - and they are both persistent and miserable to deal with.

Comments please?
