BC Island Gladiola

Here is a picture of my gladiola, still with the rain drops on. I don't take these glads up in the winter and so far, they are wintering over. They are in a raised bed. Our British Columbia Island winters are pretty mild too.

Mia (Jack Russell Terrier) and Dougal (Westie)

This is my 3 month old Jack Russell, Mia on one picture she is with her brother Dougal (9 year old Westie.) Mia was born on Friday 13th of May, 2005

I got her when she was six weeks and one day, she likes to rip up everything in sight =) and she loves to play with her big stuffed tiger. So far I have trained her how to sit. She has quite unusual markings for a Jack Russell.

Ramen Noodles With A Twist

I like to make chicken flavored Ramen noodles and add sliced cooked carrots in to it. I buy a can of Libby's sliced carrots and just add some to the bottom of the bowl of noodles. It makes a great lunch and is another way to get your kids to eat more veggies.

Unexpected Gift Items

Keep an eye out for inexpensive sale items, when doing your shopping. Maybe you can't use the item, but you never can tell when you might need an unexpected gift (example: birthday of a co-worker, a gift for a Sunday School teacher, school bus driver or mailman at Christmas time). It's better to have these types of items on hand, than to have to run out to the store for last minute items or to wish you'd gotten them already.

Using Coupons After Buying Items

Save your grocery receipts for at least 3 weeks. Coupons often come up for something you have already purchased, some stores will accept them within a reasonable amount of time after the purchase.

Organizing Your Home

Keep the phrase, "It's all about me" in mind when you are organizing your home. You deserve a home that is well organized and easily maintained.

Some examples:

Is the bulb in an outdoor fixture all but impossible to replace? Buy a new fixture and have it put in by a handyman. Every time you change that bulb you'll thank yourself.

Is laundry a hassle? Do whatever is necessary to make your laundry area pleasant. It's not expensive. Have a shelf installed for detergents and other laundry products, if needed. Buy an inexpensive hanging rack so that you don't have to walk all the way to a closet every time you iron one garment.

Keep a radio nearby and listen to music as you work. Books on tape are good too!

Spray those elegant body sprays you got for Christmas on clothing you are ironing. It will smell wonderful and make the closets aromatic once the clothing is hung up. Your family will love it.

As you wash and iron, think about how nice your children will look in clean pressed clothing and how that will be one more visible sign of your love and care.

I overheard a friend of my daughter's say, "Your clothes always look so nice." My daughter said, "That's my mom. She irons anything wrinkly before she puts it in my closet."

Whenever I am ironing I think of what Mother Teresa said, "There are no great things, only small things done with great love."

Find the Brands You Like and Get To Know The Sizes

Research name brands of clothing that are of good quality and be familiar with your size. For example, Banana Republic and The Gap sizes run small, Venezia clothing and Columbia Sportswear is generously cut. You can even go to the mall and try on clothes in the brands you like and write down the sizes that fit.
Then when you go to a consignment or thrift shop you will spot a bargain quickly. You won't waste time trying on clothes that won't fit.

I bought a beautiful Talbot's dress with a matching jacket that still had the store tags at the Salvation Army for $9.99. It is a classic cut dress and would have easily cost me seven times that amount at the mall. Last weekend, I bought a new-looking Coldwater Creek tunic for $3.99. I have seen similar blouses in their current catalog for $40.00.

It's hard to pay the full price when it is so much more fun to get beautiful clothes cheaply!

Closing Bread

Instead of using a twisty tie to close your bread bag, twist the end of the bag a few times and turn it inside out over the bread. It's faster.

Keep Your Accounts and Insurance Policies Organized

Write down on paper all the information needed if you pass away unexpectedly or expectedly, and leave with a very reliable person(s). I have one copy with my file in my attorney's office for quick retrieval. I have included all policies of any kind, listing their account or policy numbers, to whom they are to benefit, and exactly what the benefits will be, the company to contact (the phone number to call and where to find the policies etc. (at my home or bank safety box). I list all bank accounts. List EVERYTHING. And change or add to it when necessary. Do not leave anything to chance. Your loved ones will really appreciate your organization efforts in their time of grief. Remember, policies will not be collected unless requested.

No Weed Gardening!

Pick a place to start your garden. No need to till or plow, just pile this on top of your spot...

A thick layer of newspapers. Use a whole sunday section, or daily paper, in thickness. Lay it down over the entire area to be planted.

Lay it right on top of existing grass or weeds, that have been mowed very close.

Next, add a 3-6 inch layer of grass clippings, or leaves.

On top of that. put a 2-3 inch layer of rabbit, goat, horse or cow manure. (Most local farmers will give you some.)

Another layer of grass clippings.

Water well, and ignore all Winter.

Do this in the Fall, and by Spring, you can simply plant your starter plants in it, and mulch with another layer of paper, and a layer of grass clippings, or straw. (Bark mulch can be added as a final layer, for a great look. NO weeds will come thru, and the layers will turn into rich soil each year.

Repeat the layers in the fall, no need to ever weed or till again.

Soil will be so rich, anything will grow great in it!

Can be used for Flowers or Veggies. Completely Organic!

Planning a Grocery List

I'm a single guardian with a little brother to take care of and I am also going to college. It is ust the two of us. We have a decent budget of 150-200 bucks to spend a month for food. Lately, I've been lazy and we have just been eating microwavables, mac and cheese, speghetti, rice w/ (eggs, spam, bacon, etc), and sandwiches....

I've decided it's time for change, so my question is, what does your average grocery list look like and what meals do you use those ingredients to make? I know it's a lot to ask, but i'm clueless on cooking.

So what I'm looking for is some common groceries to buy and common meals to make.

Thanks,
Minh

Soda Can Costume

I am looking for a pattern or idea to make a group halloween costume. We want to go as a six pack of soda. We are thinking of using thick foam for the can and lid, but have no idea what to use for the plastic rings to go around the neck of the can. It needs to be something that is sturdy and looks close to what the actual plastic does on the six pack. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Homemade Policeman and Knight Costumes

My two boys (ages 6 & 4) want to be a policeman and a knight for Halloween. Do you have any ideas on how I can pull this off with materials around the house. I am not a great seamstress.

Thank you.

Brightening Up a Dark Room

Next week I am starting college. I still live at home, but my bedroom is my space, sort of like a much needed apartment. The room is quite small, but I can make it work, however, the walls are a dark red and the ceiling a dark blue. I like the ceiling, as it reminds me of a night sky, and the walls are great, but I want to liven it up a little more. I intend to add picture frames and bookshelves and stuff to the walls, but I was wondering what colors would possibly brighten up the room without making it look like a terrible rainbow has exploded.

Thanks for any help.
Andrea from Michigan

Pony Tail Holder

I want to make a ponytail holder for my daughter, who is a cheerleader for her school. I have seen one previously that I want to try and make. It looked like it might have had ribbons in the school colors tied in some fashion to an elastic. Any pattern ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Was Getting Married, Now I'm Expecting

I was planning for a wedding in March. But now found out we're having a baby due in April. I really think we should get married right away before the baby is born, but my fiance wants to wait since I'm on Medicade. What do you think is the best thing to do? Should we wait? I want a big wedding with a big dance but am now thinking having a small get together and possible a big dance afterward. Please help!
