This is REALLY a good recipe for gingerbread cookies. Nice and soft.
- 1 cup shortening (oleo or butter flavored Crisco is best)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 Tbsp. baking soda
- 1 1/2 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 5 3/4 cup flour
Cream first 4 ingredients. Add hot water and soda. Stir in next four ingredients and add flour. Roll out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch, cut into shapes and bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes. These are perfect for gingerbread men that can be iced and decorated.
