Taz the Cat

Taz is 14 years young! He is a long haired orange cat. He was a stray that came to live with us when we were between houses living in a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 adults, 2 kids, one dog, and two cats! He was the third cat, and has turned out to be the best!

At his age he sleeps a lot, but i have some plastic centers from tape rolls tied together that he bats around the kitchen floor! In the photo he is sleeping in a bed of sedum ground cover which has some afternoon shade, nice and cozy!

Harry (Golden Retriever)

Harry is a 2.5 year old Golden Retriever. My fiance and I got him when we bought our first house, we got him as a puppy from a shelter.

He loves to go on walks, and just being outside with us. He loves to chew on sticks for some reason! He loves playing ball and going camping!

Harry is the most loving dog, and we couldn't be any happier with him! He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He loves other dogs and people, especially little kids!

Safety Tip: Keep Glass Paper Weights Out of the Sun

Do not put paper weights or snow globes where the sun can reflect off of them. When sun reflects off the paperweight, they become very hot (like a magnifying glass), and they can become hot enough to start a fire.

I learned this from first hand experience - wish I would have known this sooner.

Paper Or Plastic Bags?

Any interest in the paper vs plastic debate? Comments? I personally prefer paper bags, as they can be recycled curbside (and hold other paper recyclables at the same time), hold more, and come from a renewable resource. Then again, plastic bags serve more post-grocery purposes, and are fashioned out of a byproduct of the petroleum refining process.

The bottom line is: are you planning to reuse the bags (plastic) or just recycle (paper)?

Elastic Headbands for Notebook Storage

Crisscross several thin, braided elastic headbands around the front cover of a three-ring binder, and your child can tuck pens, pencils, and reminder notes under them. You can also use the same concept on the sun visors in your car. A great way to keep a pen and notepad handy. You can also put your driving directions there and you can view them at a quick glance. They would also work to hold your CD's instead of purchasing a CD holder.

Weigh Bagged Produce in the Store

When buying bagged produce in a store, weigh it first. Sometimes you can get more than the label states. For instance, if you buy 5 pounds of potatoes, it must be a minimum of 5 pounds but often it will weigh more. By law, it must weigh at least what the label states.

Add Plastic Toys to Homemade Soap

Here is a tip to help encourage children to love washing their hands and bathing with lots of soap without a huge hassle. When making your own soap, a very cheap thing to do is to buy a bag of small plastic toys from a dollar store; spiders, lizards, bugs, airplanes, baby dolls, etc.

When soap making, place a toy in the center of each bar of soap. Use light colored (see through) soap. These will cost about 5 cents each. The children wash and wash, trying to get to the toy. Works every time, LOL.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

According to statistics, last year over 17 million American families paid a lot of money for things that looked funny and didn't work.

Seven million of these were antiques; the rest were college students.

Cleaning Rubber Shoe Soles

How do I clean and restore rubber around the soles of my shoes. I have not worn them for a while and the rubber on the sides has an almost white cast on it, similar to water marks.

I would like to restore the soft black look to the sides, the bottoms are okay. I tried several oils, but these did not help very much.

Painting Laminate Walls

I was reading all the great updates on laminate counters. Has anyone painted laminate walls? I wasn't sure if the varnish would run on a vertical surface.

Half of my kitchen, the countertop, backslash, wall behind stove and refrigerator, and the wall between upper and lower corner cabinet are all green marble laminate. Oh I forgot the built in table.

It was done by previous owners (looks fine), but 12 years later I'm ready for a change. I would like to get granite counter top (type they have in Home Depot in one standard size), but I don't know how to "fix" all the remaining walls. The table will be cut out and replaced with a regular table. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Paint Color Advice for Painting Countertops

For the past week I've been reading posts on how to paint countertops. At this point I'm not sure what color to paint my countertops. My cabinets are white and kitchen wall is yellow. I was thinking of a beige/brown base color, but not sure what other colors I should mix in.

When you use glitter, do you put it in the paint or do you spread it on your last coat. Thanks so much for your help.

Two Year Old Birthday Ideas

I'm having a birthday party for my two year old son. He loves cars so I thought I would follow along the lines of the Disney movie "Cars". We are going to have red and black balloons, and streamers for decorations. Also, color coordinated plates and cups, etc. A car cake is already planned, as well.

However, I would love ideas on treat bags for the kids (there will be both boys and girls at the party), also what kind of food to serve. I would appreciate any ideas on some really easy and short games. We are mostly going to just let the kids play and the adults visit. Thanks.

Identifying Old Measuring Cup

I have a glass measuring cup that appears to be very old. I have never seen one like it. Perhaps someone out there can give me some information about it.

It shows:

  • lb. measures, ex. 1/4 lb. flour or sugar (both written on the cup)
  • teaspoon measures
  • cup measures
  • oz. measurements
  • pint measurements
  • tablespoon measurements

It has no markings on the bottom of it. It stands 3 inches tall with no pouring spout. Can any one tell me anything about this measuring cup. A big thanks for reading this.

Update: This is the measuring cup that I am trying to identify. It is clear glass, not vaseline. The cup is reflecting the color of the towel it is sitting on.
