Cement Lawn

Years ago in Chicago, one of my neighbors got tired of his lawn, and had the whole thing dug up. He poured a slab of cement. When it dried, he painted it green.

I have to say we all envied him. No watering or cutting grass just pure patio, front and back. He just rolled out the lounge chairs, table, and what barbecues he had.

I'm sorry, I don't like this idea at all! Our cities have enough pavement and concrete without people destroying the little bit of green and nature that they have around their own homes. I am sure there are other more natural ground covers or natural grass that would have minimized the work without totally destroying the yard.

I like this idea! I think people are too obsessed with green lawns. I used to be one of those people. When the city informed us there was water shortage and when I kept seeing my water bills go up, I began to think. I think people's priorities are in the wrong place. Homeowners are so stressed out; working long hours, and everything it takes to raise children and take care of a home.

I think families are missing out when they spend all weekend long mowing, watering, and trimming the lawn. I sold my house and became a renter for this reason. I see homes in my neighborhood with no front lawns, only cement and with some shrubs and flowers around the foundation and pots of beautiful plants setting around. Those neighbors, in my opinion have the right idea.

There is nothing about green lawns that relates to nature. Lawns are man made. Nature is weeds, wild flowers, dirt, etc. Lawns are beautiful but a waste of our natural resources (water) and too many chemicals.

I agree that people waste too much energy and dump too many chemicals in search of the perfect lawn, but green space is so important to urban wildlife, birds in particular. Look at your lawn the way a child might see it; you'll see different grasses, tiny flowers, ants, ladybugs, worms...all part of the amazing world God made. Most of us are so busy in a day we ignore these things or look on them as an enemy to be defeated.

A lawn is an ecosystem in its own right, and since most of us live in cities these days our gardens are very important. Maybe it's better to find a more low-maintenence way of lawn care that's better for nature, too. Dandelions are beautiful! :-)

I do appreciate all the comments, I have to say I love nature, but the state my unhealthy limbs and body is in dont allow me to keep nature up and it is quite expensive hiring someone to keep it up for you, I have quite a few friends in this same catagory, who appreciate cement also.

I'd rather see some nice fake green turf that looks more like grass than grass does! *L*

This will look great for a year or two. Then it will start cracking, crumbling, and generally breaking down. And you won't be able to remove it.

It also isn't kid friendly- think the spills and falls they take- and will get icy in winter.

If you'd like to do something besides grass, xeriscaping is the way to go. Here are some great xeriscaping ideas. Google xeriscaping", too, and also check pinterest.
