Use for Old Brissle Brooms: Shoe Cleaner
I saw this tip in action recently, when I find a brissle broom at a garage sale I will try it myself. You can make a shoe cleaner using an old brissle broom. Just cut all the warn brissles off and most of the handle (leave a foot or so), then stick the remaining handle in the ground so that the brissle end of the broom is sticking up. You then can clean dirt out of your shoe treads on the broom.

Removing Grease Stains from Clothing
To remove grease and/or oil stains from clothing I prerub the areas with TIDE liquid detergent. If the clothing has been previously been put in the dryer your chances of removing the stain will be poor as heat sets the stain. This remedy only works on a freshly set stain. Happy clothing stain removal.

Plant Seedlings in Cracked and Chipped Cups
Start seedlings in cracked and chipped cups. They are cheap, can be reused year after year and actually look pretty cool. I buy cracked tea cups for dirt cheap at garage sales so I my seedlings have a tea cup theme. :-)

Use for Serrated Edges from Foil and Wrap
I have yet another use for the serrated edges that I cut out of the boxes of foil or plastic wrap. I cut them into different sizes and use them for scraping up hard pieces of dirt off the floor.
But the most rewarding use for me was to scrape the burnt part off toast.
It did the best job ever! It was also really quick. 2 passes with an edge the same size as the toast was all it took. I usually burn my toast often: but from now on I might even do it on purpose just for the satisfaction! lol

Prepaid Phone Cards as a Reward
Students need to read every day. To encourage teenagers to read try the following:
As with the prepaid phone card teenagers can earn minutes of phone time. For example: Michael reads 15 minutes he earns 15 minutes of telephone time.. Works like a charm!

You can make your own pectin from apples!! Wash, peel and slice the apples and boil for 15 min-1 pint of water/pound of apple slices. Strain off the juice thru cheese cloth(don't squeeze the pulp). Add 1 pint of water to each pound of remaining pulp and simmer for 15 min. Let stand for 10 min and then repeat the straining, without squeezing. Allow pulp to cool and then squeeze out remaining juice by pressing on cheese cloth. Combine all of these. This should produce about 1 quart of juice/every pound of apples used. This can be used immediately, or you can can it or freeze it-to can, heat to boiling point, and pour immediately into hot, sterilized canning jars. Seal and invert jars to cool. To Freeze: allow stock to cool, and then pour into freezer containers. Allow 1" headspace for expansion. 4 cups of this homemade pectin will replace approx. 3 oz of liquid pectin in most recipes.

I use newspapers to mulch with. Lay papers down around your plants and saturate with water. You can tear these sheets to fit, shred the paper if you want to, or just put several whole pages together around your plants. Be sure to saturate them well with water. This helps to break down the paper. Then you can "top dress" this with more decorative mulch such as bark if you choose to do so. This keeps me from using any chemicals on my plants or around my children and pets. I find that any stray weeds that make it through can be easily pulled out because my soil seems "fluffier" with the broken down papers in it.

Featured Feedback: RE: Battery Operated Toothbrush for Stains
I used to work in a dry cleaning establishment and the one thing that I remember is to always turn the garment inside out to work on the stain as this way you are pushing it out --if you work on the right side you are pushing the stain into the garment--hope this is a help to you.

Today's Recipes: Cool Snacks for a Hot Summer
By Deborah Shelton
Beat the heat with these cool summer treats!
Mouse Popsicles
It's not what you're thinking! The name refers to the size of the
popsicle - not the contents. Wash a bowl of seedless grapes, and
then set the grapes in the freezer for about an hour. Poke
colored toothpicks into the grapes to serve.
Juice Pops
Summer isn't complete without homemade juice popsicles. Simply
fill a popsicle mold or an ice tray with your favorite fruit
juice. Cover the ice tray with clear plastic wrap and poke a
toothpick through the plastic into each square. Place the tray
into the freezer until the popsicles are frozen solid.
Frozen Monkey Treats
Here is a healthy snack that your kids will go bananas for! Peel
a banana and cut it in half. Insert popsicle sticks into the cut
ends. Dip the bananas into yogurt or melted chocolate, and then
roll the bananas in chopped nuts, crushed cereal, or coconut
shavings. Place the bananas on a small waxed paper-lined baking
sheet and set the sheet into the freezer for an hour or so. Fun
to make and even more fun to eat!
Fruit Fizzy
Don't plan your summer party without this refreshing drink. Pour
one can of Sprite (it doesn't have caffeine) into a blender,
along with small ice cubes. Add several large strawberries, a
handful of blueberries, or other favorite fruit to the mix. Blend
the mixture until it has the texture of a slush. Pour into a
glass and garnish with a cherry on top.

50th Anniversary Party Question
I have a question! I am planning a 50th for my folks, and they don't want a 'big blow-out' either. We got a deal (free..good deal, huh?) on a beautiful banquet room overlooking the falls. We're putting together some Memory scrapbooks and will have some of their fav 50's music playing in the room (background music)... Love the gold and white balloon idea! We are ending the evening by having a vow renewal ceremony (hope they are ok with that LOL) But, here's my question ... we are trying to decide if it should just be immediate family, (kids, spouses, grandkids) or if we should invite a select few to join us.. what is the protocol when paying for dinner. If we invite them, are we obligated to pay for their meal/drinks? And if not, how do you tactfully let them know? Yikes.

Charcoal Colored Formica with Faded Stain
Hi, My formica countertop has a faded stain on it. It appears to be bleached out. I have gone to Home Depot and they tell me there is nothing I can do. I find this hard to believe that there is not a product to buy, maybe a stain or touch up marker to darken it. Please help me. Thank you Ms. Fletcher

Ice Cream in a Can
I am looking for a recipe for making ice cream in a can. I know you put a mixture in a small can, sealed tight, and then put that into a larger can and pack with ice and rock salt. Seal that tight, as well. The ice cream is made by rolling the can back and forth between two children (or two adults acting like children.) I need the recipe for the mixture and the proportions of ice to rock salt. Hope you can help. Utah Grandma

Cool Summer Savings
By Jeffrey Strain
The summer heat is here in full force and that means BBQs, swimming pools and higher energy bills as you try to keep your cool. The good news is that if you apply a few common sense ideas and solutions to tackle the heat, that energy bill doesn't have to be near as high as it has been in the past.

Problems with Commercial Flea Killers & Traditional Flea Bite Treatments
By Deena Caruso
Chemicals that act as poisons are strong enough to kill fleas, but the long term effects on pets are unknown, although they are probably not safe to use. (Employees manufacturing these products must wear protective clothing and use respirators. Plus, the product labels warn against skin contact. So,if the chemicals are potentially harmful to humans, they are probably not the most healthy product for pets. )
