Craft Project: Towel Easter Bunny

It's time to get our Easter decorations out! Here is an easy bunny to make with your children or grandchildren.

Approximate Time Half hour

Supplies:

  • One Washcloth
  • Wiggle eyes
  • 2 pom poms
  • two rubber bands or
  • some thread

Instructions:

Step 1: Lay washcloth like a diamond.

Step 2: Roll each half to the center making sure the "fuzzy" side of the washcloth is going to be on the outside.

Step 3: Bring both rolls together like a stack.

Step 4: Apply rubber band or thread with enough room to ensure a plastic egg will fit in.

Step 5: Apply rubberband or thread with enough room to make the face. You will want to make sure what is left makes cute ears.

Alternatives to Easter Baskets for Teenagers

When Easter comes around, everyone gets excited about Easter baskets. At about 12, most kids decide that they are too old for Easter Baskets, but as parents we still want to celebrate this tradition of spring. Here is a list of some alternatives for Easter Baskets for those hard-to-please teenagers.

  • Backpack: Fill with eggs and maybe a T shirt and some books.
  • Nice Purse or Pocketbook: Fill with eggs and makeup or nice accessories like scarf and hat
  • Trapper keeper: Fill with candy and art supplies
  • Tin: Fill with candy and a puzzle
  • Square Wicker Basket: Fill with candy and games can be used on a desk after Easter.
  • Plastic Shoe Box: Fill with Easter grass and nail polish and supplies for doing nails and toe nails.
  • Tool Box: Fill with candy and some basic tools
  • Tackle Box: Fill with candy and Easter grass and fishing supplies
  • Plastic Box: Fill with the materials to make a kite and a book about kite making or directions from the internet.
  • Old Lunch Box: Filled with candy, Easter grass and origami papers, and a book about origami or directions from the internet. There are lots of origami sites on the internet with directions that could be printed off and put into an old notebook to fit in the lunch box.
  • Decorated Cigar Box: Fill with Easter grass, some candy some trading cards
  • Decorated Carboard Box: Fill with Easter grass and a chocolate bunny and a cookbook.
Hope this gives you some great ideas for your teenagers. This does not have to be expensive, look around your house and the things you were going to sell at your next yard sale; you will be able to come up with a lot of great ideas. One last suggestion for that kid that has just discovered coffee, an old basket with a coffee mug and a bag of gourmet coffee.

Happy Easter!

Recycled Sentiments

I love stamping and giving greeting cards to all my friends and family. These cards are made from wallpaper books that are normally discarded by paint stores. I got the books and made lovely cards using the wallpaper samples. Added a sentiment inside and I have instant cards that are beautiful.

Newborn Charolais Calf

It's not sexed yet, but due to being born the day before St Patrick's day, the kids plan on naming it either Clover or Patrick. This Charolais calf is just 20 minutes old, born at 4:11 PM on March 16, 2008.

For fun, it likes to wander away from its momma! I was standing at the office window, which faces our pasture and just happened to watch this little one be born.

Write "Magic" Messages On Eggs

Organizing Your Pins and Brooches

I bought large size embroidery hoops, 2 scarves (or a nice piece of material cut in half = for 2). I hang these down from my hutch dresser on the side. These are out of the way, but you can take down to look at what pin you'd like to wear.

Craft: Ribbon Ties Easter Wreath

Easy way to decorate your grapevine wreaths for Easter are just to run a ribbon through it's vines and then just use plastic eggs and sandwich the ribbon between the egg and close (no glue needed). Add silk flowers and then choose two colors of ribbon, cut in 12 inch strips, and tie and knot off all over the wreath and let dangle. Fast, pretty look and no use of glue. Happy Easter! :-)

Big 6 Volt Battery Contains 32 AA Batteries

This is a tip that not many people know about and can save you big bucks. Buy a 6 volt battery and peel the paper off at the top. Take a flat tipped screwdriver and pry off the top of the 6 volt battery. Clip the little wire and you will see that there are 32 AA batteries inside. The 6 volts you can buy for $5 or $6 whereas 32 AA batteries would cost you much, much more.

Filmy Glasses from Using Dishwasher Packets

Glasses filming up in your dishwasher using Electrosol packets with hard water? Change to Cascade.

I bought a new Whirlpool dishwasher because my glasses and china were filming up. A sample pack of Electrosol came from Whirlpool, so I assumed it was the best product to use. My dishes filmed up badly in the hard San Antonio water. I switched to Cascade and the problem cleared immediately and after two or three washings, my glassware and china were clear again. I learned two things from this experience: 1) Don't rely on manufacturers to know what's in your best interest; and 2) hard water doesn't work the same with all products.

Making Your Own Echinacea Or Herbal Tinctures

If you are spending a fortune buying echinacea pills or tincture these days to combat the flu and colds, here's a way to make your own herbal tincture at a fraction of the price: Take a small GLASS jar with a tight fitting lid (a small jelly canning jar will work nicely). Then take your dried echinacea (or other medical herb or herbs) and place in the glass jar, (if your grow your own fresh herbs, dry them first!) Then just barely cover the herbs in the glass jar with 100 proof Vodka.

Print the date you started the preparation and the kind of herb used on a label and tape it to the jar. Leave this to sit in a dark cool cupboard for 2 weeks to 1 month and shake the mixture every day. After it's sat for several weeks, strain the herbs out and pour the strained Herbal Tincture into a small glass jars with an attached eyedropper... (If you have extras, store these in a cool, dark place or the fridge. The dose used with echinacea (to combat flu and colds) is about 5 - 10 drops under the tongue several times a day. For other herbs, ask a professional herbalist. The tincture will keep it's strength for one year and up to 2 years. You can usually find the small glass eye-dropper bottles on E-Bay or online.

Use Copper For Tomato Blight

For early blight, once the tomato plant is established, I always put a piece of copper wire through the stem, just above the soil. However, this will not stop late blight, as it comes from the air not the soil.

Use Copper, Slugs Be Gone!

Having tried everything possible known to man to rid my garden of slugs, I came across an item on ebay that I thought may just work, a roll of sticky back copper tape. It was 2.99 (pounds). It is placed around pots, containers or laid flat on the ground. When the slugs attempts to cross, it they get a tiny electroshock. Great, I thought, now how can I make something similar for free.

I found some old electrical cable from an old kettle. I took out the copper wire, twisted it to make it stronger and attached it to metal skewers which I pushed into the soil at intervals until I had surrounded my flower bed. I made sure the copper wire was not touching any leaves, stones or the soil, but just high enough to zap the slugs should they try to sneak under. It really does work, since then, I have copper wire around my pots and containers too.

The slugs are still out there, thinner and driving themselves nuts trying to get past my thrifty force field.

Gardening Tips That Recycle

Ice Cream Pots

Wash out paper ice cream cups. Add planting soil and plant a few seeds in each cup. When seedlings are 4-5 inches tall, moisten soil and carefully press out the root ball to transplant in an outdoor garden or tub.

Popsicle Sticks

Next time you eat a Popsicle, don't throw away the stick. You can use it in your windowsill or outdoor garden. Popsicle sticks can be used to mark seed variety, date planted, etc. They also make handy "stakes" to mark outdoor garden rows. Place the empty seed packet in a plastic bag so it won't get soggy. Staple the packet and bag to the stick.

Got Milk?

Then you must have some empty milk containers around. Rinse the empty containers out. Cut one side from a quart or half-gallon container. Fill with seed starting mix. Use the removed side as dividers. When the seedling are tall enough to transplant outdoors, simply slit the sides of the cartons and slide or scoop out the root cube gently to avoid disturbing tender roots.

Plastic milk cartons can be used too! Carefully cut a milk jug so you have a 2-inch bottom that you can use as a plant saucer to keep water from staining windowsills or table tops, or you can use it as a basic seed starter dish.

Save the tops and caps The large tops can be used to protect tender seedlings from frost. Simply press the jugs into the ground. Remove them in the morning and replace at night until danger of frost is over.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer. When asked to define "great" he said,

"I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"

He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.

Can You Eat Celandine Tubers?

I was watching a video on bushcraft/survival and the host cooked and ate the tubers of something he called "Celandine". It was a low, ground-level plant with small, yellow flowers if I recall correctly. It grew in a sort of marshy area (think peat bog) in England. It didn't grow above the knee.

Is this a plant that grows in the US and if so, what types of environments does it grow in? Also, I looked it up and pretty much everywhere it says not to eat it. This may just be modern opinion, however, since he said that if you cook the tubers in the coals of a campfire for a few minutes, it'll sap the minor toxins from the roots and it's like eating sweet potatoes.

What Causes Eat Mites?

I have found several 'cures' for ear mites - but what causes them in the first place? Contagion, air borne, outside like ticks, etc.? My furry friend is normally extremely affectionate, but it took me almost a week to figure out what was bothering him because he was keeping to himself and didn't want anyone anywhere near his head/ears. I got OTC meds, and his relief was immediate! I want to avoid ever having him suffer like that again.

Selling Scrap Gold

What is the best way to sell scrap gold to get the most bang for my buck? I realize that any place that will buy gold is only going to pay a fraction of the current high price of gold per ounce. However, I have some items that have no other use, like a gold bangle bracelet that has so many dents that it's unusable.

Should I try a jewelry store or pawn shop or a gold dealer in the Yellow Pages? Anyone out there have any experience selling their scrap gold? All replies are appreciated. Thank you!

Dog Gets Car Sick

I need help with my 5 month old pup. We do not bring him in the car a lot, and when he does he gets MAJORLY carsick. I know it is because he will not stay laying down, he moves around like a wiggly worm.

He doesn't whine or hate it, but 10 minutes in he will throw his cookies (and it's a LOT because he is a large dog). And he will do it on the way back from wherever we're bringing him. It is causing us to not want to bring him anywhere, except for where we have to, like the vet.

It is frustrating me a lot. I have googled, and saw suggestions of using Gravol, but I do not feel good giving my dog something made for humans. I also heard you could get something from the vet, but I assume it's expensive.

In a real sense, I am getting tired of our car smelling and looking like barf, it is horrible to clean up, and it is running our patience. I am told dogs grow out of it the more you bring them in the car, but I can't take cleaning up the stink 3 or more times a day, and to detail the inside of a car runs up 100+ bucks. Any help is appreciated!

FYI: The dog is a husky/shep.

I can always come up with great ideas for everyone except myself. I need ideas for a college graduation party. I have the food covered, and the cake (cake decorating idea was from one of you!!). I plan on doing a picture display or a power point of pictures that run over and over (I have to see the room first to see if there is a wall or screen I can run this on). I plan on covering the tables with her college colors. She is a math major, so her cake is in a calculator, with cong in the display portion.
