Garden: Black Swallowtail Butterfly

My Black Swallowtail Butterfly friend, she laid some eggs on my dill and the her children hung out for awhile to entertain me. The caterpillars only eat dill or parsley but the butterflies seem to like a lot more, it is enjoying some Oregano in this picture.

Craft Project: Crocheted Recycled Christmas Cards

Since I can't stand to throw out all my beautiful Christmas cards,I cut shapes from them, then punch holes around the sides, and crochet on them to make beautiful new Christmas Ornaments. I decorated our tree at church last year with them and received raves!!

Ask A Friend To Take Your Wedding Photos

Some friends are getting married, and asked me--a definite non-professional--to take some pictures to celebrate their engagement in order to save a few pennies. We went to some really pretty outdoor sites, since I of course don't have a studio, and had a really fun afternoon together. We're great friends, so they were really relaxed and happy being with me, which made for some really fun pictures. I simply spent some time retouching, then put the best ones on a disk and gave it to the couple as an engagement gift. Nice way to save pennies myself, since it only cost me the CD and a bit of time!

Stewie (Double Dapple Dachshund)

Stewie is almost 2 and a Double Dapple Dachshund. I got him from my hairdresser. There were 2 in the litter. She kept one and I took Stewie.

He likes to play with his big brother Jake, a chocolate lab. Stewie is a very special little boy. He is blind in one eye and kinda of cross-eyed in the other. He was born that way, a side effect of the double dapple color. He is definitely a mama's boy, and makes me laugh at everything he does.

Thing One (Boxer)

Thing One is eight months old and a boxer. I got her and her sister (Thing Two) for Mother's Day.

I live in the country, her and her sister (Thing Two) love to run and get into things. She got her leg caught in a tree root and broke it.

Today's Tips:

Have Kids Write Notes in the Busy Morning

My children like to tell me important stuff that I have to act on just 5 minutes before they are gone for school in the morning. At that point, I usually do not have a second to spare on writing down any reminders. So I ask them to quickly write down what they just told me on a piece of a Post-it note and attach it to the casual dining table in our kitchen. This way, when I am back from work and in the kitchen to prepare our dinner, I see the reminders right away. In the evening, I have more time to properly act on the reminders than in the busy mornings.

Using Hang Over the Door Shoe Organizer

Hang and over-the-door shoe organizer in your garage or on/near whatever door you exit. In it, stash all the grab-n-go items you may need - umbrella, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. Everything will be in one place and ready for the road when you are!

Joke: How Many Electrical Engineers?

Q: How many electrical engineers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: None. They'll be so busy trying to figure out why the light won't turn on that no one will think to check the light bulb.

Source: I came up with this joke after I did something similar, but with my cordless mouse. I was sure there was something wrong my computer so I shut it down, checked all the cables, rebooted - only to discover later that the batteries in my mouse were dead.

Ask for Free Gift Boxes When Shopping

While out holiday shopping, be sure to ask if the store has free gift boxes available for each purchase made. Many major retailers will give you the boxes either at the register or at Customer Service counter. Even if the item isn't for a gift, you can stash the boxes away for later use!

Packing Peanuts in Net Bags for Plant Containers

Like many others I use packing peanuts in my flower containers. I don't have to use as much potting soil, and it keeps my containers lighter. This year I went to go change out the soil in my biggest container. I had to hand pick out each peanut from the soil. What a chore! When I went to replace the peanuts this time, I put them in an onion net bag and tied the bag off. Next time I go to change out the potting soil it will be a snap!

Run Water in Unused Bathroom

I was watching TV and heard an interview with a rep from Ben Franklin Plumbing. She said to run the water in unused bathrooms (toilet, sink and shower) once a month. This is to avoids two possible problems: showers can lock up if unused and, if there is a problem, you can get it fixed BEFORE company comes!

I didn't know about the former, and the latter is just plain common sense!

Product Review: Ponds Clean Sweep Towelettes

Product: Ponds Clean Sweep Microdermabrasion Wet Cleansing Towelettes

Manufacturer: Ponds

Cost: $5.99 (appx.)

I have had such a time with cleansing my face. I wash my face very carefully twice a day. But no matter what kind of cleanser I use, when I put toner on a cotton ball after washing my face, it comes back dirty.

I don't even use foundation, but just a little concealer (very little) and blush that is non-comedogenic (doesn't clog pores), so is the concealer. But I understand that they were clogging my pores, along with other general dirt.

Meet Family in the Middle

Yesterday was a fine day. My kids drove south for 20 minutes and we drove north for 20 minutes. We all met at a car show. Perfect weather to wander around and look at over 1000 various cars. Meeting at a place like that saved us all driving time and gas money. I was thrilled to spend the day with my husband and kids. I will have find more free events in the same area for future outings.

Save Leftover Chip Crumbs

When you get to the bottom of the chip bag and the tortilla chip bags there are always broken chips in the bottom. The broken potato chip pieces make wonderful casserole toppings, filler in meatloaf, coating for chicken and other meats for frying, etc. The tortilla pieces are wonderful in soup, top of Mexican inspired casseroles and salads. Make sure to let your family know that you are using these leftovers and NOT to throw the bags with the crumbs away. This only works if you can get everyone on board the savings train!

Doggie Treats Out Of Stale Bread

Having adopted my third "recycled" dog who is being trained, I was going through a lot more doggie treats than before. I decided to take some bread that was going stale anyway and try an experiment. I piled up a few slices , then cut them into quarters. I laid them out on a cookie sheet, lightly brushed them with healthy olive oil and sprinkled them with garlic powder. I put them in a low oven for a bit, until they were hard and crunchy, like melba toast. All healthy ingredients, and they basically cost me nothing, I used the too stale for me bread, and the dogs love them. May try flax seed next time!

By Linda from Vista,CA

Editor's Note: Most veterinarians recommend against giving your dog garlic but there is a small group that advocate for it. Please talk to your own vet prior to feeding dogs garlic.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Thanks to Shirley for this report:

I believe my daughter Janice wants a pair of glasses. I don't know why she does. Perhaps glasses are now "cool" to have in school? But though she sees just fine, she still says she needs glasses.

I took her to the eye doctor just to check it out though. Janice was asked to read the bottom row of letters on the eye chart. She said, "All right, I can see the 'O' and the 'P' and the 'T,' but not the 'N' and the 'Z'."

Making a Deep Kitchen Cabinet More Accesible

Is there an easy and inexpensive way to modify a deep-to-the-side corner cabinet that's under my kitchen counter to make it more accessible? The way it is now, I have to get on my hands and knees and shove my items to the closed-in side to the right. So, in order to get to these baking pans, etc. I must unload part of the cabinet in front of me first. Any suggestions?

Tickling Sensation Inside Ear

I have had a strange sensation in my left ear for 10 weeks. It is in the outer part of my ear and feels like a hair is in there at times and also a weird sensation. My GP prescribed some drops and said it was quite dry inside my ear. It could be eczema but it doesn't bother me inside my ear.

The drops did nothing for it and on my second visit she gave me Hydrocortisone cream, which also hasn't helped. This is driving me crazy. How can something in the inner part of your ear cause this feeling on the outer part of the ear (I mean the curly part)? Has anyone else had this happen or can anyone offer an explanation. My ear is not red or sore, just a sort of tickle sensation.

My Mother is Nagging Me About My Weight

My mother is a very opinionated person. She thinks everyone needs to do things that she does and that her way is the only way. I am over weight. She is very skinny but still diets. She keeps pushing me to do her diet of drinking shakes and only eating salad and chicken. I do not like the shakes and I have a family to cook for and it would be hard to incorporate this into our lives. I want to lose weight but by eating smaller portions and learning to eat the right way.

Tonight she told me it was a matter of doing her diet and losing 40 pounds or not and staying over weight. It was very hurtful. How do I make her leave me alone about this? She will not accept the fact that she is being so hurtful. Especially everyday when she tells me what she has eaten and how much weight she gained or lost that day.

Helping Chihuahua Adjust to New Home

My Chihuahua is not adjusting to his new home! About 10 days ago we got an 11 month old Chihuahua. We already have a 3 month old Chihuahua who has adjusted just fine. The 11 month old is terrified. It was three days before he ate, and he still will only eat a few bites. He has gotten better at going potty outside. He will only go potty for me. When other family members take him out he just freaks out and runs away. He will not go potty on a leash, I have tried over and over, he just stands there.

Unfortunately, he will not go to anyone else but me. He constantly whines and freaks out over every little sound or movement. Everyone says it will take time, I just don't know. This guy is terrified all the time. I'm afraid if we keep him too long and it doesn't work out it will ruin any chances with a new owner. Not sure if we should keep him or return him to the breeder. Any thoughts?

Mildew Smell In Car

I have just recently bought a 1995 Monte Carlo from my grandparents. It has been sitting closed up in Maryland for a little over a year. I brought it down to Florida and for the first few months I have had no problems. About two or three months ago I started noticing a musty or mildew smell. Not long after my bf starting telling me that every time I get out of my car I smell like that.

I'm a very clean person and my car reflects that. Every Tuesday on my day off I clean it out from head to toe. I use the sprinkle and vacuum air freshener in hopes it will help. That of course only lasts a couple hours and the smell comes back. I've never left my windows down in the rain and I never leave trash in there. Tomorrow I'm trying Damp Rid but if that does not work what should I try next?
