Easter Bunny Poem

People buy cute cuddly baby rabbits on impulse for children at Easter. They don't realize that a bunny is not a low-maintaince pet and they don't stay cuddly babies. The family gets bored with the rabbit and they end up at the animal shelter. This happens with rabbits more so than with other kinds of pets. This is a poem about such an Easter rabbit.

I remember Easter Sunday
It was colorful and fun
The new life that I'd begun
In my new cage.

I was just a little thing
When they brought me from the store
And they put me on the floor
In my cage.

They would take me out to play
Love and pet me all the time
Then at day's end I would climb
In my cage.

But as days and weeks went by
I saw less of them it seemed
Of their loving touch I dreamed
In my cage.

In the night outside their house
I felt sad and so neglected
Often scared and unprotected
In my cage.

In the dry or rainy weather
Sometimes hotter sometimes colder
I just sat there growing older
In my cage.

The cat and dog raced by me
Playing with each other only
While I sat there feeling lonely
In my cage.

Upon the fresh green grass
Children skipped and laughed all day
I could only watch them play

From my cage.

They used to take me out
And let me scamper in the sun
I no longer get to run
In my cage.

Once a cute and cuddly bunny
Like a little ball of cotton
Now I'm grown up and forgotten
In my cage.

I don't know what went wrong
At the home I did inhabit
I just grew to be a rabbit
In my cage.

But they've brought me to the pound
I was once loved and enjoyed
Now I wait to be destroyed
In my cage.

In memory of all the bunnies we couldn't save.

People should also take caution with chicks too, I have seen people selling 'coloured' chicks for Easter presents. They do not stay fluffy and are you really prepared for a house chicken? :) Impulse pets of any kind just aren't a good idea!

Hi,
I have a great bunny story. In May, seven years ago, a bunny hopped in our yard. He had been dropped off in the park and was looking for a home. Our son and daughter-in-law made a fantastic home for Bugs. He lived seven thoroughly spoiled years as the alpha pet. Bugs passed away in my son's arms, still loved and cherished. Some Easter bunnies end up better for being discarded.
I know this isn't the norm, but for one special bunny, it sure was a blessing that some family didn't want to care for our beloved Bugs.
I agree, think before you get a pet. Our son and daughter-in-law aren't everywhere to love your special bunny. A special thanks to everyone willing to take a pet someone else didn't want - after they brought it home.

I have a neighbor who used to buy her children chicks every year for Easter. They never made it out of the cardboard box that she brought them home in. Every year she told them that their dad would build a pen for these chicks, but they always ended up dying in the cardboard box on the porch waiting for their pen. Talking to the neighbor did nothing, so one year I talked to her kids instead.

They asked their mother to please not get them chicks that Easter and that was the end of that.
I bought my kids a rabbit a couple of Easters ago and we love him dearly, but every year when I see bunnies, chicks and ducklings for sale I wonder how many of them will live to see next Easter.
